    DUUUUDDDE!!! Where did you find THIS one!?!?!?!? I have been looking for this game and this game-winning play for 35 YEARS!!! You had to have gone DEEEEEEEP into the archives or your checkbook to get this!!!
    Noteworthy--The late '70s Seattle SuperSonics were the forerunners to the late '80s Detroit Pistons, and I say that with admiration and respect. The parallels are there: Both teams got most of their scoring from three talented guards (Point Gaurds: Gus Williams/Isiah Thomas; Shooting Guards-Defensive Specialists: Dennis Johnson/Joe Dumars; Off-the-Bench Gunners: "Downtown" Freddy Brown/Vinnie "Microwave" Johnson), started a football player at power forward (Lonnie Shelton/Rick Mahorn), featured an exceptional rebounding reserve (Paul Silas/Dennis Rodman), and had an outside shooting Caucasian center who was usually a top-5 rebounder (Jack Sikma/Bill Laimbeer--must be pointed out that Sikma was interpreted as "aggressive" whereas Laimbeer was labeled "dirty").
    Without the Los Angeles Lakers amazing offseason talent acquisitions (Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper, Haywood, Chones, Landsberger) following the Sonics' title in '79 (and DJ's personality implosion), Seattle would have ruled the roost for a while.

    • @madcapper6
      @madcapper6  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joseph Wright You make some great points. Primarily for the reasons you mention I was a fan of that Pistons team because they were so reminiscent of the '77-'80 Sonics. One other similarity was the fact that both teams played in a domed stadium and the attendance record of 42,000 in Game 5 of this series against the Bucks held until the Pistons broke it 8 or 9 years later. If I remember right, 27,000 tickets were sold within 24 hours of tipoff after announcing the game was being blacked out. That's still got to easily be the biggest 24 hour run on ticket sales for a single game in NBA history by a longshot.

      +madcapper6 And the Sonics had always had some real tough guys on their team. From their 1967 beginning the Sonics roster had such bangers as Tom Meschery, John Brisker, Leonard Gray, and Shelton, and later there were Xavier McDaniel, Maurice Lucas, and Frank Brickowski.

    For bucks fans this was a really tough loss. The bucks really lost this series when junior bridgeman went down in game 5 and missed games 6&7. Bucks couldn't make up that scoring off the bench. Sonics deserved to win this series. Gus Williams destroyed the bucks in this series. Just scored at will. Great NBA playoff series from 1980.

      As a Sonics fan, I became a Bucks fan after this series and they became my 1B team into the '80s. I've sometimes wondered how the Bucks would've done against the Lakers in the WCF had it been them, especially in light of how bad Sikma struggled against Kareem in that series. I do remember toward the end of the regular season the Bucks notched a fairly decisive win over the Lakers in LA which indicates they'd have played the Lakers pretty tough too just like they did against the Sonics in this series.
      But yeah, I can imagine for Bucks fans, losing this series had to have been tough.

    I remember this series...one of the most underrated, nasty, physical series of all time. When the Sonics won this series(and game 1 against the Lakers in the WCF), they had nothing left. The Lakers simply overpowered the Sonics(with a little help from Magic).

    • @derrololson5966
      @derrololson5966 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It had to at least be possibly the most evenly matched series in NBA history. I think the scoring differential over the entire 7 games combined was like less than 5 points and I think the Bucks even had the higher point total.
      I agree completely on your assessment of the toll the series took on both teams and how that factored into the conference finals against the Lakers. Hard telling if the Sonics could have beaten the Lakers if not for having to play in this meatgrinder against the Bucks. The Sonics led throughout a good part of that Laker series but seemed to run out of gas in every game.
      Man, those Bucks were scary good in '80.

    Beautiful follow-through from DJ on that incredible game-winner. I remember how the NBA wasn't so big (at least with the TV ratings) for a 3-5 year stretch from 1977-1981 or so, but they played some great basketball then. And the home crowds in such cities with strong teams such as Seattle, Washington DC, Portland, Milwaukee, Denver and Philadelphia would go wild cheering for their teams. You see it here. Boston and Los Angeles would follow.

    • @Ariamaluum

      I'd like to find all seven games to this series. Weeknights were tape delayed, ending after 1 a.m; Games 4 & 7 on Sunday; family outings Bucks acquired Bob Lanier midseason, but their division was so weak, playing Seattle or LA only way to know if Bucks were legit.
      They were, just not quite good enough. I can still see Junior Bridgeman's ankle giving out game 5 & Bucks struggling to score without him.

    • @DeeNice681
      @DeeNice681 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      @jasonrichards9431 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After 1980, Bucks were a little thin on the front line. I didn't appreciated PF Dave Myers & all the dirty work he did until after he retired in 1980 & was no longer there doing it.

    • @madcapper6
      @madcapper6  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jason Richards Yeah, that was probably the main reason they couldn't win a title in the '80s. They were always right there with the Celtics and Lakers but with guys like Paul Mokeski and Randy Brewer they just couldn't handle the likes of Robert Parish, Moses Malone and Kareem. Then ironically enough they finally tried to address it with the Sikma trade but he never seemed to pan out for them. Alton Lister could have been the solution if he could have learned to stay out of foul trouble.
      Always been a hard core Sonics fan but as the 80s wore on and the Sonics faded further and further from contention I started following the Bucks, partly stemming from the fond memories they provided in that series in '80. There was a lot to like about the Bucks back then but that lack of a 5 to scrap with the big boys did them in every time.

      @@d820m Good question. I'm not exactly sure what was going on but yeah, there were all sorts of conflicts going on at that time. This game was played on April 8th while the M's opener was on the 9th. Since Game 2 of the series was also on the 9th, they might have just opted to play both games at the Coliseum to simplify the process. And the fact that they had to play Games 1 and 2 on back to back nights indicates that there were possible scheduling conflicts with the Coliseum as well, if they'd have scheduled them normally with an off day in between.
