1980 NBA Playoffs Seattle Sonics vs Milwaukee Bucks

DJ howitzer puts Sonics 1 up This is part of the overtime session. The shot by Dennis Johnson ultimately was the difference between the Sonics losing the series in 5 games and winning the series in 7.
BUTCH VIG ............. THE ONLY MAN IN HISTORY THAT COULD DO JUSTICE, TO THIS SONG BY REMIXING IT AND KEEPING IT'S SOUL PURE. !
One of the most exciting endings in an NBA play-off basketball game that I've ever seen until (LA Laker) Derek Fischer made that amazing shot with only 4/10th of a second left in game #5 of the 2004 western conference semi-final against the San Antonio Spurs in Texas! (hyperlink): th-cam.com/video/NSnAvhvfniw/w-d-xo.html
What building is this game in?
Seattle Kingdom
This is "that's my boy .."
And dont you ever say Iverson and Chapman lit him up. M0r0n
Dont you ever call Pippen a better defender than Jordan you m0r0n
This still makes me sick!
Fact: This is the Milwaukee Bucks' final Western Conference playoffs appearance before moving to Eastern Conference next season.
This version is insane I love it from 3:12 and on 🔥🫡🤘🏻
I miss the Seattle Super Sonics and having basketball team for my state.😥😥😥 I will never heal properly in my heart with such a lost to my state in losing our home team. Sea-town fans where some of the loudest crowds back after those days in history of the game.
Don’t worry man, despite that I’m a Laker fan, I hope that someday that the Sonics are back in the NBA.
God bless I wished we never lost the home team of Seatown
It didn’t quite work for the Bucks, but a great play call at the end.
NBA travelling has never been as harsh as that call. Damn.
It appeared as though they could have called traveling on the last Millwakee basket off the steal on the breakaway. The guy took the exact same steps as Gus did earlier and got called.
Can we get the live video of this concert???
For bucks fans this was a really tough loss. The bucks really lost this series when junior bridgeman went down in game 5 and missed games 6&7. Bucks couldn't make up that scoring off the bench. Sonics deserved to win this series. Gus Williams destroyed the bucks in this series. Just scored at will. Great NBA playoff series from 1980.
As a Sonics fan, I became a Bucks fan after this series and they became my 1B team into the '80s. I've sometimes wondered how the Bucks would've done against the Lakers in the WCF had it been them, especially in light of how bad Sikma struggled against Kareem in that series. I do remember toward the end of the regular season the Bucks notched a fairly decisive win over the Lakers in LA which indicates they'd have played the Lakers pretty tough too just like they did against the Sonics in this series. But yeah, I can imagine for Bucks fans, losing this series had to have been tough.
D J was one of my favorite players with the sonics in those days I remember he broke up a 3 on 1 fastbreak Rip D.J
I bought the CD Single of this back when it came out and it's called the "Slutnostic" Remix. :D
Actually, it's called the "Sundance" mix.
Why did you have to pop up what a heartbreaker for a young teen I thought DJ banked that shot & I didn't realize how close Marcus came to making that alley- opp 1st time seeing this since the day it happened in 1980
❤ 1970s NBA basketball
I absolutely love this version!!!!
The late Wayne Cody, "the Round Mound of Sound"
They said on here it was post punk. In the 80s It was one off the best alternative songs ever recorded 💯
It’s such a wall of sound that I didn’t even know I needed it until I heard this
The GOAT goes to The Wizard, Mt.Vernon's Finest
Thank you Arnold, your words are so true, Gus is not doing well , so keep him in your prayers🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🤎
People forget that the Nba Play offs were Not Shown Live on Tv in 1980 , the Games were Tape Delayed starting at 11: 30 pm at Night During the Week
This one was a local broadcast on KIRO TV in Seattle and it was shown live.
Except on Sundays. The NBA nationally televised gameson Sundays were always live broadcasts. It was usually on Friday nights that CBS would nationally cover those games, and on Friday nights CBS would tape delay the game until 11:30 pm.
I watched it live in Milwaukee
@@jrm2383in Madison it was picked up after the 10 pm news.
I also prefer to listen Brian Howe sing this song.
Prefer Brian's performance of this over Paul Rodgers. "gasp, shock, won't somebody call the police" Calm down. Is only my opinion 🤘
No worries! Mine too!!!
i agree with you 111% matt !
There's no soul in this version sorry Brian
There's no brain in your skull. Sorry, Brandy.
This on some 90s movie soundtrack . . . Can’t remember which
You are correct. I believe it was the soundtrack for 'With Honors.'
The original version is used on the opening credits to Layer Cake but that is more like 2004.
RIP Brian Howe .
Dennis Johnson = from CAMPTIN!!!1 (Compton). Straight outta CAAHMP-TIN!
Sounds like Larry Steele on the color side of the mike. "Watch it go in." Now that's premium broadcasting. Also, the 3-point shot was so new that it was common that fans and broadcasters would forget that these bombs added an extra point to the score. Great video!
Yes it was Wayne Cody and Larry Steele calling that game for KIRO 7 in Seattle...
Could you imagine if Marques had been able to pull down that alley-oop at the end of the game and been able to stuff it in the basket? Too close for comfort on that one. I'm wondering though, since nobody had touched the ball inbounds and Marques was in the air when he got the pass, if he'd have been able to make the shot, would it have counted? Not sure exactly what the rule is on that.
madcapper6 yes, the ball was out of his hands. Look at the ref giving the signal.
Damn, I don't remember this! I obviously watched it on TV too!
So that wasn't a "buzzer beater"? Why did the clock instantly stop after the made basket, is it even possible for someone to call a time out and the ref to acknowledge it that quickly? And on another note Usain Bolt has nothing on Gus Williams, my God is he fast.
DICK TRICKLE clock stops after each basket made in the last 2 minutes of a game.
Clock stops after a made basket
Milwaukee Bucks were in the Western Conference?
Yes they where in the West when they won their only championship. Bucks, Bulls, and Pistons moved the East and Rockets and Spurs moved to the West the next year when the Mavericks came into the league.
I dont understand the bucks play in the west in 1980????
Yes the Bucks and Bulls were in the West back then and the Rockets and Spurs were in the East. The four teams swapped conferences I think in '81 or '82.
When Dallas became a franchise.
Love Wayne Cody, but he blew this call in the worst way.
Great game. 2 great teams. True basketball being played
She Sells Sanctuary. Beautiful
Big Vig did a fucking job with this.
Awesome She Sells Sanctuary Mix !
One of Dennis Johnson's highlights with the Sonics. Thanks for putting this up I've been hoping to see it again for over 35 years! The year before, there was also a key shot he made from the baseline to send Game 2 of the West semifinals vs. the Lakers to overtime. That was one hell of a shot too.
Talked to Sidney Moncrief a number of years ago and he felt this Bucks team had the best shot at an NBA title. Still remember my dad screaming at the tv at the end of game 7 when Dave Meyers missed an easy basket and they ended up losing.
No they weren't gonna beat the Lakers that year
He was hacked on the play. Refs aren’t going to call it at the end of a game.
Thank you for posting this! I've been an NBA, Bucks, fan for over 45 years. I've seen a lot of great playoff series during my time and this was the best, toughest, closest nail biter from tip-off of game 1 to the final moments of game 7. I would, without hesitation, buy a DVD of this series if one existed. Again, thank you for putting this up. I've been looking for clips of this series for a long time.
Butch Vig really remixed this? From Garbage?
yeah, same butch vig. he was a producer before he formed garbage. (still is)
it is garbage
No, it's actually The Cult :)
Same guy. You can definitely hear his influence too.
He produced "Nevermind" for Nirvana
Is that Kevin Calabro with the call?
No. It was Wayne Cody. The game was not shown on CBS nationally but was televised by KIRO TV locally. Kevin Calabro did not become the voice of the Sonics until 1988.

DJ was the best, my childhood NBA idle, great post of a great game! RIP Dennis, RIP!!
Robert Astrop Agreed. I loved DJ.

DUUUUDDDE!!! Where did you find THIS one!?!?!?!? I have been looking for this game and this game-winning play for 35 YEARS!!! You had to have gone DEEEEEEEP into the archives or your checkbook to get this!!! Noteworthy--The late '70s Seattle SuperSonics were the forerunners to the late '80s Detroit Pistons, and I say that with admiration and respect. The parallels are there: Both teams got most of their scoring from three talented guards (Point Gaurds: Gus Williams/Isiah Thomas; Shooting Guards-Defensive Specialists: Dennis Johnson/Joe Dumars; Off-the-Bench Gunners: "Downtown" Freddy Brown/Vinnie "Microwave" Johnson), started a football player at power forward (Lonnie Shelton/Rick Mahorn), featured an exceptional rebounding reserve (Paul Silas/Dennis Rodman), and had an outside shooting Caucasian center who was usually a top-5 rebounder (Jack Sikma/Bill Laimbeer--must be pointed out that Sikma was interpreted as "aggressive" whereas Laimbeer was labeled "dirty"). Without the Los Angeles Lakers amazing offseason talent acquisitions (Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper, Haywood, Chones, Landsberger) following the Sonics' title in '79 (and DJ's personality implosion), Seattle would have ruled the roost for a while.
Joseph Wright You make some great points. Primarily for the reasons you mention I was a fan of that Pistons team because they were so reminiscent of the '77-'80 Sonics. One other similarity was the fact that both teams played in a domed stadium and the attendance record of 42,000 in Game 5 of this series against the Bucks held until the Pistons broke it 8 or 9 years later. If I remember right, 27,000 tickets were sold within 24 hours of tipoff after announcing the game was being blacked out. That's still got to easily be the biggest 24 hour run on ticket sales for a single game in NBA history by a longshot.
+madcapper6 And the Sonics had always had some real tough guys on their team. From their 1967 beginning the Sonics roster had such bangers as Tom Meschery, John Brisker, Leonard Gray, and Shelton, and later there were Xavier McDaniel, Maurice Lucas, and Frank Brickowski.
+threeby8887 Just barely old enough to remember Leonard Gray. I was around 7 or 8 back when he played, along with Haywood, Slick Watts, Tom "Lumber Legs" Burleson and Rifle Rod Derline. You remember the Rifle I'll bet. Any idea what ever happened to him?
madcapper6 Actually I'm more of a Rocket fan, and I'm not familiar with Derline. I do remember the other mid-'70s Sonics you have mentioned, especially Slick, who played with the Rockets.
+threeby8887 Rod Derline was a local kid. He led Elma, WA to a state championship. He spent a few years with the Sonics in the mid 70's.
