I attend a PWI too and while my experience may not be the same as yours, I understand where you’re coming from! I’m seeing a lot of the same issues at my own school especially when it comes to progress, it can be VERY slow. I’m glad you made this video to bring light to the issues!
It's great hearing from your perspective and the experience you had at a PWI. Cal Poly looks like a really nice college and the campus view is so pretty. Keep making amazing content :)
I think you’re doing a great thing by utilizing your platform to speak out on change. I wish you all the success in your Civil Engineering major and career ahead!
Thank you for making this. I’m a black woman, and I was accepted yesterday. Do you think the campus is safe? I’m fine with dealing with minor racial issues, but I’m afraid of going to campus feeling unsafe.
Yes is has been relatively save for the most part. Last summer during the protests there were major hiccups, but in terms of being a student on campus, i personally wasn’t put in dangerous situations due to race
I am a second generation Cal Poly grad and also an OWD. What I hoped you would share is your experiences working with Poly professors. Do you find them helpful and are they fair? I ask that because CPSLO students have traditionally rated the professors high in the area of approachability and helpfulness. Do you find that to be the case? Further, how do you view your job prospects as a future CPSLO grad?. In some fields a CPSLO diploma gives you a leg up. Do you have thoughts regarding that aspect?
After the arrival of my new manager at work, I have experienced multiple micro-aggressions and unfair treatment. I no longer like attending work anymore because of this, and when I learned UCSD rejected me and I’m now stuck at a PWI (Cal Poly), I’m terrified. I know it sounds dramatic, but I want to know if it’s heavily discouraging. When I SIRed to Cal Poly my teachers said I shouldn’t worry about the demographics. But now that my job feels terrible to attend, I’m hella concerned I won’t be strong enough to be at Cal Poly.
Whether an incoming freshman or a transfer, I think one of your top priorities when coming into cal poly should be to find your community in extracurriculars or through the orientation extensions. I don’t think you will be able to avoid micro aggressions but in my experience, i haven’t been able to avoid them anywhere in life, not just Cal Poly. However, finding people like you will make it easier to have people to talk to who can relate/understand why you’re going through
I'm sure you have had racist encounters and micro-agressions, it's very possible you overlooked it or don't know what it looks like. You can be so used to it you just don't realize it.
Way to ingrain it into her head that she's a victim of racism. Perhaps she just has better coping skills than you & she will become a leader in society instead of choosing to see herself as a victim.

Yeah I think it’s be helpful if minorities are sharing their experiences and perspectives on this as well!
I’m glad you’ve found a community at cal poly! I’m just starting my 2nd yr and still need to find my people
Yeah sometimes it takes awhile but getting involved sure helped!

Yeah for sure, I may just be accustomed to the environment because I grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood as well, that’s a good point.

Yes, this conversation is definitely important for growth and awareness for many minorities
