Hey Phil, does it still working? I accidentally bought a gen4 from Fanxiang, which also a manufacturer for Koxia. If yours are still working flawlessly, I'm going to try your method to see if works.
What you need to do is turn off ASPM for any drive which is causing issues in your Surface Pro. With that off it works perfectly and there are no crashes with any drive.
I'm wondering why Surface Pro 9 is running SSD on PCIe 3.0. According to specs both device and drive are PCIe 4.0 compatible. I wanted to upgrade my drive with WD SN770M SSD(which has 5150MB/s and 4900MB/s read/write speed). It seems pointless when Pro 9 is running SSD in a mode that is limited to 4GB/s(limit for PCIe 3.0 x4). Some YT tutorials for this upgrade include speed tests done after replacement and authors are dissapointed with results. I suspect it is rather a problem with PCIe 3.0 limit than the drive itself.
I have a timetec gen 3 1TB that outperforms this drive on crytaldiskmark. Rather have a gen 3 than have fingers crossed that the gen 4 drive doesn't suddenly start causing issues after a windows update.
Thanks for the video. After i change my SSD to a 2TB SSD from WD Black SN770M the surface CPU is always overheating :( Even when i download games from Steam Store. CPU is running by 100%, its get very very hot and than crash... is it possible that the new SSD is overpowerd? The download rate is very fast and also the writing rate to ssd. And also after gaming its crash down after few minutes. Do you know what i can do? Thx
Hi. Thank you so much for this video. I am about to change ssd for my surface pro 8 so I'll follow your steps. I have a quick question though: I saw u had a Orico nvme enclosure. I have one orico enclosure with a 8TB Corsair MP600 CORE XT nvme ssd and it is not being recognized by the surface pro 8. It is recognized by my dell laptop but not from my surface pro. Do you have the same issue? Thanks
@@fanikurti2420 hi, I didn't notice any major issues, but when I tried it on a MacBook it was not recognized and I had to reformat the SSD. On my windows machines it was fine... Unfortunately I don't have the surface pro anymore so cannot do any additional tests...
Hi, I have upgrade Same Surftace Pro 8 16Gb from 256 to 1Tb Kioxia BG5. All working good a few weeks but since yesterday I have some issue. Suddenly Screen is blcked and surface restarts. Can this be due to the SSD? Any SSD controllers updates to make or changes on Bios to do? Thanks in advance.
I do think it's possible. Do you already have the ahci power settings installed? Here's the link: www.tenforums.com/tutorials/72971-add-ahci-link-power-management-power-options-windows.html Otherwise definitely update your surface firmware.. also do you think it might be temperature related? If it's hot where you are it might be a factor. These are supposed to run hot.
Hi. What drive did you ultimately replace with and does it perform well without failure? Because I have the same issue with my Sabrent Rocket drive that I installed on my Surface 8 Pro. Also, you mentioned someone was able to fix the issue with a firmware upgrade… what do you mean by that?
Hi, the Kioxia BG4 SSD shown in the video performed flawlessly so I never changed after that. Used it for several months, but I now no longer have this machine. The firmware update thing was something people mentioned in Reddit threads - some of them had issues upgrading the drive, but after updating to a certain build (normally via windows Update) they were able to use it. I can't verify this as I never encountered any problems in the first place.
@@PhilKnall Just spoke with a friend that is very good with computers, he said that potentially upgrading BIOS (like you mentioned in the video)could solve the issue with little effort. If that doesn't work and the problem continues, he said to open the cover and check if the SSD becomes hot to the point where it is not comfortable to keep a finger on it (usually this happens above 50celcius). If that is the case, it is probably the reason why manufacturer has placed the original SSD into a heatsink case... And, ultimately, if the heat explanation is not relevant, than most likely, we are looking at a corrupt or low quality SSD - which are common on Amazon and EBAY nowadays. In which case purchasing a replacement from a certified retailer would be the best solution.
Hi again Phil. Not made yet the "AHCI Link Power Management" as I was not 100% sure if it will solve crashes and was wondering to look for 3rf gem SSD to ensure I have no suprises in the future. When you say after weeks, "No issue" that's because you done something with voltage management or AHCI? In fact after 2 weeks of low usage of surface I had no issue but after installing more apps I started to have screen lock followed by sudden blackout (especially when I get the notice to install microsoft Xbox games). Are we talking of same king of issue with SDD voltage? AHCI tuto sould solve this? Can´t understand how it still working good for you without changing anything. Ah, one thing I sould do is to put Sdd back in the 256Gb sheath... Thanks again for your help.
Unfortunately it's much harder to troubleshoot when there are no issues, than if there were. I haven't made any changes to my PC aside from the AHCI setting (and only after a few days, no issues without it either). However it's not my main machine so I haven't used it for hours on end. I guess we'll find out when I edit my next video on it.
@@PhilKnall OK. AHCI mode activated. I have put both active Battery and plugged in. Is that correct or it should be only on battery? Thanks again for your time.
