A couple of suggestions. 1) make sure you install something impervious along the bottom of the foam, I’ve seen critters get into the foam and make nests. In the past I’ve used an 2x2 L shape flashing secured to the wall and then taped to the foam at the front side. 2) Tape the seams of the foam to prevent water intrusion past the sheets. If you have any gaps between the sheets, fill them with foam, let it cure and then tape it. 3M made a good tape for foam. 3) When you guys install your battons over the foam, make sure you make relief cuts across them so that there is a way for water to move through them, and a bug proof air gap at the top and bottom. The battons I used to get from lumber yard had a cut 1/4x1/4 about every foot. I’ve been a builder for over 20 years, and have built a lot of high performance homes. People don’t realize how much moisture gets behind the siding. It is critical that there is a way for the water to escape or else it can cause major problems down the road (I’ve seen siding blown of the wall because water froze behind the siding and caused it to fail).
The additional installation on your house will be a game changer. I think you will be surprised on the efficiency on heating your home. The homestead has come a long way. 😎
Great video! Looked like a good day to sort the depleting wood store. It’s just amazing how good you must feeling having restocked! You both work so well together, that’s half the battle finding someone who is in tune to your logic! Looking forward to seeing the saw mill in action! Have a good week❤
You guys own some great equipment and you aren't afraid of hard work. After insulating the ceiling and wrapping the exterior with the foam board you will use 1/2 the amount of firewood. GOOD LUCK GUYS, PLEASE WORK SAFELY‼️🚜🇺🇸 MAGA 2024 Vinny 🇺🇸
I saw you had a video this morning and went straight to it. Looked like a blast! It was cool you showed us around the old town. Miss seeing you weekly but glad your not gone forever. Enjoyed watching!
Thank you for another episode letting us know where you are at with everything and what is coming up. Keep it coming we love your channel. Have a good week.
Love your videos! Found you through Eric and Arielle at Simple Living Alaska. You are also a favourite channel! Thanks for showing and sharing your life with us all.
If your stove can handle coal I would suggest getting a couple of tons and burn that. Coal heats very well and you don't have to burn a fire wide open to get the heat you need. Acoal fire can idle and give off lots of heat..just a suggestion..love your home and all of your adventure videos.❤❤❤❤
Von worked so hard on that pile. Ryan, jump right in to help. Inflation is real! Even for foam board. Haha, Test season is going ok...but get that wood ready to burn, baby, burn. Get to work. A lot of snow to shovel, yikes. Kobuck loves his mom. You and your mom hang out together a lot when daddy's working away from home. Good boy, Kobuck. I'm learning a lot from the videos. I want to be ready for when I get there. I'm ready, put me in coach. Haha, Be safe guys Love yas
Good Friday morning everyone. Hope everyone is having a wonderful week. Another very interesting video, especially the band saw blade sharpener, I have often wondered how they sharpen them or if they were just a one and done. Have a Blessed week and see y’all next week.😊
Very nice you two! My dad would set the bead on tires using lighter fluid. My luck I would probably burn down our tractor, but it seemed to work for him. It’s funny how fast the weather changes. Getting a lot more light now. From a video or two back that’s nearly a +70-degree change in temps! Kobuk looks happy and a little lost with his buddy! Have a great week and thanks for sharing!
The lighter fluid (for cigarette lighters not charcoal) works. Another way to do it is to use a ratchet strap around the tire to force the beads on the rim while inflating.
I’m sure I’d burn something down using that method also. It always amazes us how fast things turn when we get close to spring. Won’t be long now and the snow will be gone.😁
That's a good full body workout with the firewood. Tip for if you tire pops off again and you can't get it to seat- take a strong rachet strap, put it around the middle of the treads around the whole tire, and rachet it as tight as you can. That will eliminate the air gap to pop it back in place. Keep up the great work!
Crazy the life of Alaskan, always making sure you have enough wood, but you all put that 2"insulation on the outside us going to a big change on the wood burning!!!! You all are enjoy to watch your Videos!
Hoping that WWOGA youtube channel grows and brings in lots of revenue. Looking forward to the next video guys. Oh .....FYI.....garden all planted in ne Texas...
It is nice to see the sun shining, but wow, the temperature seems cold. I'm looking forward to seeing the mill run again. It was fun putting logs through the mill when I was there, and it is satisfying to convert the logs into usable lumber to build with.
Getting the wood supplies ready for use is a good job to get done. One more thing ticked off. T The price of all building materials has gone up a lot in the past two/three years. Everything has gone up actually.
You're better together 😉 That's definitely an easier way to cut wood. You still have that much snow? 😮 We haven't had much here this year in our area. I might not always send a message but i want to to know that I really enjoy your every video. Have a great weekend. God Bless ❤
I had envisioned a stanchion for your panels, but, putting them on the roof of your saw shed, well, that's just genius! Now I'm thinking a saw shed with solar panels, and then a shed to hack your sawn lumber in out of the elements, more panels, And when you have enough storage for lumber, another shed for firewood (your slabs), and or a shed for your out door equipment, All with solar on top. That should net you plenty of solar. Just make the roofs steep enough to shed snow easily and easy to clean off. Make a plan, so it's done once, and bury conduit for the wires going to your solar shed, so there will be room to add as you build. Pretty soon, and it might take years, you will have a really nice property that will be paying for it's self. I didn't realize that you were wrapping your home with foam. That should really make it a lot warmer with less firewood. Looking forward to future build videos!
Can't wait for the next video, but I have to say you Alaskicans(sp?) are crazy working outside lol I know you have to but I get cold watching you all lol
love watching your Chanel, cutting wood is something that never ends, i grew up with wood stove or heat, it is the best look forward to next week till then stay safe
Team work👍. Nothing like the heat you get from burning wood. We use a pellets stove here on Cape Cod of course we don’t have the cold like you do. This year we used our wood burning stove in the basement and what a difference. Watching you two two with the wood brings back memories for me. Hard work but so worth it. You will be tired so rest up with a night cocktail. Take care✌️🇺🇸❤️❤️
My dad used to get login trucks loads of fire went back in the late 70s early 80s and he was Logging truck driver so he got it fairly good price on it cuz it was from the same company but back then it was$ 600 a load 10 to 12 chords of wood I imagine what it is now and that was for for hemlock and yellow cedar only
You guys are an AWESOME team 😎 What is it about the sound of wood splitting that sounds so pleasing? Have you ever considered the number of times you move a single piece of wood 😮 😂
Hello , why did you do the wood in two pieces? There is no better result than to start a fire with smaller pieces. But for starting the fire you have enough dry wood in the wood barn. It also will not dry more than it is now. Kind regards, love your work and videos a lot!
Man, that insulation board will be a game changer! 2" of foamboard is like R 7 value? It'll be great..😂😅 That firewood delivery is a great idea, if it's cost effective like you said. To many ppl buy beautiful acreage filled with woods, and then cut them all down.😢 Love ya'll ❤
The plan was to build a ground mount that they would set on but I need the mill shed and it will be a perfect place to serve dual purpose and mount panels on it.
Hey guys, thanks for the latest update! Great to see things moving along, getting the insulation up will make a huge difference. How long does it take to sharpen each saw blade? Stay safe both of you!
we are just finishing summer here. It will be our second winter in this house so starting to get everything ready for winter. I dont feel quite so bad when i think about purchasing 9 cubic metres of firewood when i think what your lot would cost.
That's no fun @Vonn, my daughter over in Juneau said the winter has been weird. You guys had a crap ton of wood, but you have plenty of dead fall I hope to get more ready to use. AK was weird this year. Did you guys cover the mudslide ? My best friend was the only survivor. Stuff is looking good there on your house.
I wouldn't be getting eye level with that sharpener with out safety glasses 🕶️ on cuz it's probably long way to hospital ??? & One thing I have told people when u live in the middle of nowhere you need to be a lot more careful then most good luck & god bless
Good afternoon from England UK . Love your channel..love the progress off hard work. Only issue I have, I subscribed to you but when I subscribe, the next week one will say I haven't subscribed..do you know what the problem is?.

Wow! Thank you for this very informative comment. I will be used my all of your recommendations as we proceed forward.

Once we blow insulation in the attic and install the foam, I see us using half of the amount of wood.🤞😊

love that sharpener all auto matic wow great work you guy's do
A grapple would be useful. Sure glad I added one when I bought my tractor. Couldn't be without now.
Expensive
They are, I got my grapple with the financing with the tractor

What is it about the sound of wood splitting that sounds so pleasing? Have you ever considered the number of times you move a single piece of wood 😮 😂
Agreed, splitting wood makes a pleasant sound. I wouldn’t want to think about how many times we move a log, it might get depressing.😁

The Owen’s Corning 2” foam board will give us R10 for a total of R31 for the walls. It’s going to be a significant upgrade.
@@wildwoodoffgridalaska Awesome! You'll have a snuggly home, with less wood usage.
Next time your tire pops off ratchet strap the tire. It will help it to seat the tire.

Are you going to use the concrete sidings on top of the foam as these are fire proof?
We are using board and batten siding that we’ll mill ourselves.
Do you have any type of bartering community in your area? Seems like it would be helpful.
I’m not aware of any but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.
