Thank you both so much for this!!! In 2016, I put Sullivans Cove bourbon cask on a "worldly whiskey flight" at Village Whiskey in Philadelphia in the states. However, I did not know enough to appreciate what I was tasting in the juice. Thank you so much for this deep dive and the quality content if I ever the pleasure to wait on you or see you around these parts, you will certainly get a dram on me. cheers

If you read this, I have a suggestion for you.... on the subject of Whiskey, perhaps you can do an episode on which brands are best consumed "neat", and which brands are best for various Whiskey cocktails.... such as the Mint Julep, Old Fashioned, Etc. ... the drinks that help the whiskey stand out. THAT is my suggestion!!

I was at the new Archie Rose distillery located near port botany and they were telling me it’s the largest independent distillery in the Southern Hemisphere, huge leap for the industry
Absolutely! They're making some serious quantities of whisky there, so only big things to come for Aussie whisky.
This was a great discussion, thoroughly enjoyed. I am really only beginning my whiskey journey, have been well in to craft beers for quite some time though. Have subbed..
Around 25 to 30 years ago, I used to spend a lot of time in the Lark Distillery in Hobart, my sister worked for Bill Lark, running the cafe there. Met Bill several times, used to buy the Tasmanian Pepperberry Vodka he made and some other liqueurs. This was also at the time a Tasmania artist working upstairs, Peter Barraclough, lovely guy. There was also another lady who lived across the road from Mark 'Chopper' Reid (well at least a property he had). They had Moo Brew beer on tap, made well good use of one night of the Dark Ale, so good coming from the tap, yum! I see in the background in this video New Zealand's Moa beer on tap, shame cant get the here in Hobart anymore, hasnt been sold for quite a few years now.

Dear Cara! Thank you soo much for recording this series! For a lot of northern hemisphere inhabitants it was a fascinating journey. I don't distill things, but home brewed things with Aussie or Kiwi hops are close and dear to my heart :). If only Tasmanian malts were attainable stateside, lol...

What a great representation of some truly fantastic Australian whiskies. Every single one of those bottles has the right to call themselves the best in their class. I would also like to mention. About a month ago, a Victorian distillery called Backwoods, also released some red gum whiskies.

Malt whiskeys are popping up in the unlikeliest places. Take Arizona, for example. There's a distillery producing malt whiskeys from both smoked and unsmoked barley in Tucson. What's unique about the Del Bac Dorado smoked whiskey is that the barley is smoked with mesquite wood. We're going to have to wait for a whole lot more climate change for Arizona's extensive peat bogs to become a thing, but mesquite is all over the place.
A dear friend turned me to Australian whiskey, and I was pleasantly surprised. It is very soothing

Old Hampton is a fantastic small distillery that's been going under the radar. Australian Red Gum cask is quite leaky and the angel share is too high combined with the warmer temperature, so only viable as a mixing ingredient or a finishing touch. Would love to see these distilleries ramp up their production and bring down the price for popular enjoyment.

Aussie whiskey is on the up but few distilleries actually offer reasonably priced single malts. Limeburners, Whipper Snapper, Starward, Corowa and Hellyers all seem to have a reasonable asking price for their liquid. Lark, Sullivans Cove, Old Kempton, Lark and Nant most are 500ml and have a price tag that is almost taking the piss. Tasmanian whiskey is great but the price tag doesn't match the product and single malt Scotch seems far more reasonable both in quality and price. I just want reasonable prices for the Tasmanian drops its like they charge a premium for being Australia's highland region and I suppose its gotta cross the Tasman.
Yeah I mean you have to remember the production facilities of most of these are absolutely tiny compared to your big Scottish single malt distilleries so I think everyone just has to decide for themselves where they think their value threshold is!
Definitely would want to try these Aussie whisky especially "Old Kempton" . Yes you say it better (now you know). 😁😁😉

Have not seen any of these, but my US state is a control commission state and makers/distributors have to pay the members and staff 'consulting' fees to get on the permitted list.
That must be so frustrating!

So besides the expensive Sullivan's Cove I have access to Hellyer’s Road. Are either of those worth the money?

Being perfectly honest I haven’t loved some of the Hellyer’s Road I’ve tried, but I also know there are some releases which are meant to be great. Probably worth looking at some reviews of the expression you have available to you before committing!
@@BehindtheBar Agree. Their entry level has that off-putting dairy note (Hellyer's Rd is originally a dairy farm) that has kept me away from their higher aged statements, which may be quite good.
This makes me think of Welsh whisky and how underrated it is.
I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of trying any but I believe the Welsh would make good whisky!
@@BehindtheBar Penderyn is the biggest brand, I believe. They distill in Breacon Beacons. They do single malts, but also gin (Brecon Botanicals), vodka (Five), rum (Siddiqui) and cream liqueur (Merlyn.) Welsh whisky had been a forgotten thing until just about 20 years ago. They do distribute in Australia and the US, as well as France and Taiwan.
Do you have the equivalent of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail in Australia. Definitely would consider an Aussie whiskey road adventure

Yes, there is a Tasmanian whisky trail! Lots of beautiful places and great distilleries to visit. There are also some great distilleries in the Adelaide Hills if you're doing a wine tour up there.

Regarding that craft whiskey smoked with sheep dung, Floki distillery in Iceland does that as well. I came across it at the airport duty free while I was there. Unfortunately I was there on a short layover and not having tried it before, I didn’t think buying a 100USD bottle was a good idea.
Starward remains one of the best Whiskies in the World. I love the red wine barrel aging!
It’s great value for money, big fan of the Nova red wine cask!

"Better" is obviously personal and subjective but there's no question Aussie whiskies hold their own on the world stage.
