How much do I feed my pigeons?

  • I've found feeding racing pigeons is a big debate. It seems like every loft manager has their own strategy and ideas. Some use ready made mixes and others have their own special blend. One thing that seems to be consistent is how much the pigeons should be fed. My uncle and every online resource I've found agrees that you should feed each bird 1 tablespoon of feed per day. The last few days I’ve noticed my pigeons have been leaving some extra food so I’m still finding the perfect amount. It’s important to keep your pigeons hungry so they are eager to eat quickly. This will help with training down the road. Share your strategies with us. We are always looking to hear new ideas. Thanks for stopping by. #racingpigeons #racinghomers #racinghomerpigeons

I dont think you should starve birds overnight to accomodate some "ratio" you heard about. Birds use energy really fast, eat frequently and are hungry all the time. If they leave stuff theyre getting enough. I wouldnt aim for empty feeders but just try to keep to a similar amount of leftovers every day and ALWAYS have fresh, clean water avaliable day and night. Thats from 60 years experience of nearly every species of animal (found in the UK with a couple of exceptions).

I have four pouters and they leave exactly those same seeds from the mix. Maybe they don't like them because my pigeons don't it seems. Wonder why they don't like them as much as the others in the mix?

I get it from a local feed store. I think it runs about 15 bucks for 50 pounds.

Less corn, would they eat whole BOSS?

My pigeons don't like whole corn, but they will eat cracked corn. My birds are a bit picky and I'm trying to fix that, especially with a potential chick on the way, but other birds may eat the corn kernel whole.

The bottom of your pigeons cage should be metal sheets too. So they poop can easily manageable.

In the new loft we have a solid floor and it's painted so the wood doesnt' absorb anything. The loft in this video was thrown together with scraps.

These are racing pigeons. I have been feeding them a basic mix from a local feed store. I will look into getting a higher protein mix soon.

I do. They're smarter than you think and a lot more quiet. Don't knock it out, it's very rewarding too.

In certain countries nearly everyone keeps them in massive flocks, and have for centuries.
