Am Kenyan and I have huge respect for Haile Gabreselaissie. He is highly respected and admired in Kenya too despite the many times he broke our hearts at the olympics and world championships. Kenya may have many great long distance champions but Ethiopia's Haile is the greatest, as painful as it makes me to say that.
2:55-3:30 is for me totally awesome! At first it looks like a slow jog but then when you look you realize they are probably going 6:30 pace or so. The efficiency and relaxation of people of Haile's caliber is awesome. Just compare him to the kids next to him, the kids look like they are booking it while Haile appears to be trotting along.
Then why do people from say, Colorado, not show the same dominance. Yes, altitude training is A component of why the East African runners do so well, but it is only one part of the formula. You must also consider culture/lifestyle, training methodologies, genetics, diet, etc.
LMaster1 yeap diet and their genetics which affects how their body is shaped. They have lower muscle mass and lighter body fame to enable them to minimise the oxygen usage in their body.
LMaster1 Not only that they started running at a very young age.Specifically for haile he ran 10km to school and 10km back to school everyday when he was young.
