I love it! I love love love the costumes. I love New Orleans, but do you have to be from Lousiana in order to become a Mardi Gras Indian? My son and I are from a Afro-Indigenous and French background. However, we are not from Lousiana. Just out of curiosity.
No, you don't have to be from NOLA, you could actually create your own "Mardi Gras Indian" tribe. Or you can create something similar and just show up to celebrate on your own There are general rules to "masking" but its all to protect the traditions. its tough though because they create their own regalia and artwork for their costumes and it takes forever for some because everything is hand stitched by the wearer even if they are a child, they start early. its all tradition..
They have practice and meeting also everyday because we are always having events in city, so you have to be ready to commit and most of our Indians are family so it’s passed down to generation
