Visiting these old mansions you marvel at the resources that went into building and running them, but also gain an appreciation for "modern conveniences" they didn't have- like central heating, electricity, and refrigeration. No telephone, radio, television, internet- just a gas lamp to read by, and music if a) you have an instrument handy and b) someone knows how to play it.
