      Security workers are not "forced" anymore than the hotel workers. Sometimes ones situation is such, that one has to bite the bullet to insist on their fair share. Also, the security guards are not properly trained if they erupt into violence rather than de escalating the situation. picketers walk around in circles, chanting and brandishing signs on sticks. The former administration advocated for violating the personal rights of folks with whom you disagree.

      I have represented custodial workers who had college degrees, but liked the work and the hours (one fellow worked nights and just continued going to school) But tell me, how long would you work in a building that had no one cleaning the floors, walls, toilets, sinks, etc? Clearly, a clean facility has value. It should have a living wage value. classism is an ugly thing. My pop had an 8th grade education. He got a good union job and, thanks to the GI bill (and being white) was able to buy a home, live a decent life and pass that property (wealth) to me. He was offered higher paying jobs at the railroad, but wouldn't take them because he would not be happy working inside. (drove my mom nuts, but in his sixties, he decided to go inside, the weather got to him) BTW, he also taught himself trigonometry, and continued learning his entire adult life.

      You might want to research your statement. Yes, there was a time... as you say.... it had to do with unions and their workers fighting for paid sick leave, vacation, health care and community colleges. The unions created the weekend AND the middle class. If you check you might find that we went backwards during Republican influence and improved financially and in care for we the people, under democratic direction (though there have been bad folks in both parties) but democratic platform has in recent past been focused on the community that is Americans and the Republicans, since after Eisenhauer, work for big business.

    Protesting on private property? How is that legal?

    • @chanaham
      @chanaham 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      By law, any property where "any public person can come & go" can also be protested upon and can be leafleted. Most folks (especially most management) are unaware that this is according to the National Labor laws. I worked in a hospital. The Hospital Cafeteria is accessible to anyone in the public. No one checks you in at the door of a hospital, and no one prevents you from going into the cafeteria for lunch while visiting your friend or family member. Per federal law that means any union worker or representative from any local can go to the cafeteria and distribute leaflets to make folks aware of the contentions between the negotiating parties or to solicit for interest in organizing.

      Granted, there have been some corrupt union leaders. The more active & involved the actual members are, the more knowledgeable the workers are of their own responsibility to representing the CBA, the better and stronger the union. My union local was strong, but was trusteed out by a corrupt leadership in the International. We then applied to the NLRB to establish a "new" member driven union and that union is strong. A union, like our government, can not be left to others to handle. We the people, we the workers, have to make sure it stays on track.

    This Hotel is closing down . These workers are gone very soon. This strike is a Waste of time... It will take 3 years to demolish and the rebuild a $ 700,000,000 resort . the owner is Michael Dell ,founder of Dell Computer corp. He bought the company that owns the hotel , Miramar LP Inc.., in 2006. for $200,000,000.. By not changing ownership , the property taxes stay the same . $860,000 a year, instead of $ 2.1 million if He bought the hotel himself. . Miramar will retain an 8% stake . . he split ownership 3 ways . His wife owns 49%, He owns 43% and Miramar LP owns 8% They haven't put any money into this property since 2006. because it is being torn down .The building permits and environmental impact reports take years and years in Santa Monica. they are notorious for taking a long time to approve new construction.. Any time now they will close and those workers will be looking for work. elsewhere.

      Big business tries to convince you that (poor, scared) immigrants are stealing from you. Trust me, it ain't that poor guy that's robbing you blind or keeping you down. A favorite picture I've seen has 3 men at a table. The fellow at the head of the table has a plate overflowing with cookies in front of him. The immigrant on the left side of the table has a cookie. The US worker on the right side of the table has two cookies. The fellow with the overflowing plate of cookies is saying to the US worker "careful, that guy is trying to steal your cookies." Rich folks want you to believe that it isn't the welfare they receive from our Taxes thanks to (mostly) Republican legislation and de-regulation - but rather, the piddling amounts (in comparison) of our tax dollars that help the disabled, the poor, underpaid workers, hospital and health and welfare. DON'T BUY IT.

      Tell me if you want to stay in a hotel where no one cleans the room, no one cleans the toilets. Do you suppose there's value in staying in a place that is clean, that has someone who will run up to your room for your every whim? You have no idea the complicated training in handling the cleaning products and caring for each of the rooms in 4 star hotels. The profit margin to owners, managers, Board of directors is extensive. In this country, and the rest of the 1st world countries - management and owners made approximately 35% more than their workers. Still true in other countries. Here, owners and boards suck up one employees annual income, daily. They make 500% and more of their workers and then complain they can't afford to pay them, and can't properly staff. Maybe the use a portion of their ridiculous incomes to staff and properly pay their employees. 40 years ago, I learned that my companies leadership were taking 700,000 a year. I'm pretty sure they could have gotten by on 200,000, and then properly staffed their hospital with the other 500,000 dollars.
