01/05/23: I tried this recipe this evening and my goodness, it came out wonderful. So tasty that I couldn't stop eating the darn squares...LOL! I managed to salvage a few for others, though. But what I love about it most is that it tastes like Lemon Meringue Pie, so smooth and the perfect sweetness. This is definitely a treat to be had in our home going forward. Laura, these were amazing. I used a bit more lemon juice as I love the overwhelming tartness, but they turned out amazing. I froze about half of the pan since it's just two of us, but I gotta tell you it'll be worth it to have them around often with how easy this recipe was. Thank you!
I've watched so many lemon bar recipes, and hers is the only one that uses condensed milk instead of sugar, and I can honestly say its the best!!! Her lemon bars have like a cheesecake or custard type of consistency because of the condensed milk. Love them! 🍋🍮🥰

My dad and little sister make these differently and they get the amazing yellow color without food coloring and the filling isn't creamy, it's pure lemon-y goodness!

I just made these for 22 of my work colleagues. That's 2 more than Jon Doe, who commented somewhere below me. After discussing Syria, the economy, and the weather - we turned to the more serious discussion of using condensed milk in these lemon bars. The conversation got so heated that we had to put our thoughts into a makeshift ballot box. I wonder if John Doe's office did the same thing. Anyway the results showed that we were ALL in agreement: Laura's Lemon Bar = 5 STARS!! CONGRATS LAURA!
I added 1/3 and it came out perfect. I added it because I already made a lemon key pie which the custard is the same as lemon bars and I remember it wasn't very sweet.
food coloring is concentrated color... in order for it to turn out a vivid yellow ( say when dying royal icing.. just water and powered sugar so pure white) it needs to be strong so that when it mixes in it is the approprate color... part of the problem with why red turns out pink... it looks red when dropped but when mixed into something it lightens...

The filling is not too sour. To me the sourness is well balanced with the crust, along with the powder sugar.

Kay i actually used oranges few days ago & it tastes MUCH better . Use it only if you prefer sweet citrus over sour !

Laura the scent used for pastiera contains the essence of orange blossom :) It is really a heavenly scent.
@iTeddyBelle that's because of the concentration of colour in the dye, it looks pretty orange red when in the bottle.

I use lemon (or vanilla) yogurt if I dont have sweetened condensed milk. Turns out great if not better!
