  • King Hussein of Jordan: On A Knife Edge is the second of a two-part series telling the story of Jordan's King from 1952 to his death in 1999.
The second half of King Hussein’s career, his relationship with Israel, the Palestinians, the Arab world and the West.
This two-part series is the story of Jordan's king from 1952 to 1999, a major political figure in the cauldron of the Middle East and one whose life and career were never far from a crisis, at home and abroad. Hussein was still only fifteen when his grandfather, King Abdullah I, was shot dead by a Palestinian gunman in July 1951 with the boy by his side at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
His critics described him as an artful opportunist, cynically shifting alliances with the sole aim of staying in power. An Israeli intelligence report once described him as a man trapped on a bridge-burning at both ends, spanning a crocodile-infested river.
He was certainly an arch politician who navigated the minefield of the Middle East all his political life but never lost faith in the peace process. In his last major TV interview he said he believed that peace would eventually be reached in the Arab-Israeli conflict although, of course, almost two decades later, that peace is still proving as elusive as ever.

King Hussein managed to survive during an extremely turbulent time, kept his throne for 46 years, survived coup d'etats, assassination attempts and made Jordan one of the most stable Arab countries. His legacy is huge.
I really wonder if he ever had the time to rest during his reign.

I'm Palestinian and I wish the West Bank would unify with Jordan again. Socialism-Communism and irredentist nationalism only helped destroy the Arab world and keep it back from unifying. The Hashemites were strategic thinkers, unfortunately the majority of the Arab populace is emotional and wants a man to scream and flex muscle rather than successful rulers. Let alone people who are attached to fake borders and identities that are remnants of colonialism.
Jordan couldn't and cannot win a war with Israel. Only maniacs would drag their countries to unsuccessful wars. And here we are, Jerusalem is lost, Israel is swallowing the west bank day by day... Lebanon is a state run by mafias, horrendous war in Syria.... Only Jordan remains

The jordanian Monarchy is from the family of the prophet pbuh, and will not fall.. Nasser fell, they still here..
The jordanian monarchy, done its best according to the situations present, they lost a lot.
Palestinians killed Malik Abdullah for his freindship with israel, hated hussain for his talks with israel, and what did plo do in 93 in oslo,
Arafat kept it all hidden from Hussain, why?
Its easy to criticise the father for his policies, its when you step in to his boots that you realise the ground reality.
What did the saudis ever do, the emiratis, and all the others...
If the palestinians accepted the house of Hashim, it would be a totaly different reality today.

The audacity of the man in 14:50
“Jordan was responsible to liberate the West Bank, and Nasser was supposed to liberate Gaza Strip” !! Shifting the blame and denouncing responsibility for your own fate ??? How on earth would you gain sovereignty when you are considering yourself dependent ?!!

I still don’t understand, he was always trying to do the right thing, but every turn was pressured by commies and UAE or w.e they were then.
Kassem seems a bit confused, he looks sleepy, maybe he needs a rest.

Long live the King. The lines drawn in sand and on map by Great White Fathers of London must be respected.

No he didn't. The Jordanian Constitution states only 1st Son can be King. That's why Hussein was King and not his Uncle Nayef bin Abdullah

Two things i learned from this documantry
One, husain chose the wrong side of the war. Israel would have been much stronger partner for him.
Two, israel has god by her side. god promised israel the land . No one can take it away. The moment arabs nations will accept it there will be peace The middle east
