None of our US presidents came to our reservations and apologized in our language. This was beautiful, and she was very diligent and spoke her best in the language of Samoan and a bit Maori.

Tears!! Not Samoan or a pacific islander but this is how we move towards greater understanding as a nation and we can come to terms to greater maturation and softer hearts towards one another. As we heal, we unite, as we unite, we are better and stronger together as a people and as a country, than ever before. Thanks Jacinda, for reminding us all.

As a samoan, It was the hardest thing to watch, knowing in my heart that our Prime Minister who had no part in the dawn raid give a heart felt apology to those who experienced the dawn raid. I couldn't quite understand why she had to go through the traditional/cultural apology, as she didn't have to, but for her to accept and apologize in the cultural way, has surely shown what a true leader she is and hoping to those who suffered from what happened in the past can all move forward for better days ahead. Thank you Jacinda Ardern.

I don't believe Jacinda Ardern is fake. She chose to do this in respect for those who have been scarred with painful memories of the past. I never lived to experience this as a samoan born n raised in NZ, but if I were to put myself in the shoes of those who did, then I'd understand. I just believe she didn't have to apologise in the cultural way, but that's just me personally. I'll forever be thankful to Jacinda for what she did. She's a blessing in God's loving family. She's a true leader in my eyes, someone who stands for right n truth. I'll always respect our prime minister Jacinda Ardern. I'm hopeful people who dont like her will see she didn't do it for herself, she did this for the people who did suffer. May we all choose to live a peaceful path. Live to love and respect one another no matter our differences.

Some of the comments on this video just make me sad. The dawn raids were a real thing, that happened to real people, and apologising for your countries past events is not, "being woke" it's admitting your countries faults, but leaving them in the past so they won't happen today.

  • @Norwegianheathen

Both my parents, myself and my siblings were born overseas. My father is from Norway and my mother from Poland. I have never faced opposition to me staying in New Zealand.
    Not ever.
Even after growing up in a large Maori community in Keri Keri and Kaikohe. I was accepted immediately and enjoyed my childhood very much with the people of the far north.
But i have seen and heard old white new Zealanders tell brown people to go back to where they came from. To speak English or dehumanize an entire ethnic group based on skin colour.
Again, i wasn't born here and had a strange accent speaking Polish with my mother in public when i was a kid. Not a single objection to my being here or the language we spoke.
However, when Maori is included on national television, it's the end of the world and geriatric white New Zealand loses the collective plot.
So You'll never convince me there isn't hypocrisy in this country heavily tipped toward a certain demographic who'll moan at the drop of a hat because brown people are getting some form of recognition, compensation or an apology.
This apology in particular, is very much long overdue.

I arrived in New Zealand in the late 1960s as a baby. But we didn't come here legally. My grandparents were sponsored and they invited my mum (and me) to come too. But we weren't legal citizens. My mum married a kiwi fella and became legal. However, we were white so there were never any issues with our legal status. It's only in the last few years I really appreciated how differently I was treated when applying for my NZ passport and going through higher education that I was not harrassed because of my dodgy legal status.

It's not when she - or you or I were born - that's relevant. This is *the Government* apologising and the Government in New Zealand very definitely was around - regardless of who was leading it - at the time of the Dawn Raids. What's more, it was the Government that conducted them. At the personal level, it's also quite possible to feel sorry about something you were never (and could never) have been involved with. How many times, when someone has told you that they someone they love is ill, injured or has died that you're "Sorry"? So that's what's happening here, The Government is apologising and as a secondary layer to that, for herself, Jacinda Ardern is is expressing that she is "Sorry" that the Dawn Raids ever happened to anyone.
