  • Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, has formally apologised for police crackdowns in the 1970s that targeted the country’s Pacific communities.
    Ardern on Sunday told a tearful crowd gathered at the Auckland town hall that her government was offering a formal and unreserved apology for the infamous “Dawn Raids”, during which police - often accompanied by dogs - raided homes to find overstayers who were then convicted and deported.
    At the time of the raids, many people from the Pacific islands - including Samoa, Tonga and Fiji - had come to New Zealand on temporary visas to help fill a need for workers in the country’s factories and fields.
    Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports from Auckland, New Zealand.

      Jacinda participated in an ancient Samoan ritual of forgiveness that’s no longer practised due its barbaric/violent nature. That ritual she did is only practised if you’re willing to die just to gain forgiveness from who you wronged. I think it's important that we clarify the injustices that surrounded the Dawn Raids period. We ought to recognise that the raids were in line with immigration legislation. In fewer words, they were legal. The problem is not the legality (as some may tend to misconstrue the issue), but the policy that was being implied by the patterns of the law's enforcement. In comparison to other ethnic groups that sported a number of overstayers proportionate to Pasifikans, Pasifikan overstayers were more heavily pursued and prosecuted. We should mourn the fact that, while the law was being enforced (as it should be), it was not equally enforced across all sections of the population.

    • @sisyphusvasilias3943
      @sisyphusvasilias3943 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But that's not accurate. The raids and on-street inspections were conducted with ILLEGAL violence and invasions of privacy and breached NZ civil Liberty laws.
      The enforcement of immigration laws was ILLEGAL by applying them unequally on racial bias and as NZ was a signatory to the UN Charter of Human Rights aspects of the law were in breach of higher International law.
      In defense of 1 law, they broke numerous higher laws.

    • @souveniehollande979
      @souveniehollande979 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sisyphusvasilias3943, the police are allowed to use reasonable force to subdue a suspect. They are also entitled to ask for identification if there is good reason to suspect the commission of, or conspiracy to commit, a crime. And so long as they are granted a warrant by the relevant authority, they are allowed to enter private premises.
      As for your claim concerning international "law", it is not a system of law in and of itself, but rather a set of conventions and customs to which member states grant assent. In order for international convention to become binding on a country, it must be ratified by the State in the form of legislation that has been passed. The highest law within a country is its constitution, which empowers the government to create legislation for the administration of the state.
