I'm so glad I found your site! I teach sewing to kids and adults. I do summer sewing camps. Last year I did a kids camp doing a quilt collage. We used the regular steam a seam which I DO NOT recommend. It gums up your needle. The Steam a seam 2 lite is much better!
Thank you. I have found that Soft Fuse requires steaming to adhere well. The directions say no steam, but I have found steam makes it adhere beautifully.
You eliminate Misty Fuse b/c it wasn't a permanent fuse. I actually like it for exactly that reason when collaging. It allows me to temporarily tack pieces in place and reposition several times. It all gets quilted over anyway, so the impetus for a permanent fuse is not there.

I’m new to collage quilting (building my first project, your Cactus now…with the mosaic pot 💙🩵) and I like how light weight the Misty-fuse is on fabrics. You can “pin” a Misty-fuse prepped piece in place temporarily with just a touch of the tip of a hot iron. I haven’t done the quilting yet, but I will use the Teflon needle when it’s time. Heat & Bond is by Pellon ... Google it ... comes in different weights as well, from featherlight to ultra ... and the iron spit because, when you added water, you didn't wait for the water to heat up ... another thought, Health & Safety, don't wipe the iron with the dryer sheet, you'll burn yourself, iron the dryer sheet with the hot iron to remove fusible from the soleplate
Excellent demo! Thanks for doing this for us. I think just by watchng that I agree with your assessment. I've tried heat and bond on some applique projects - and okay. I used to glue in the beginning of fabric collage - and I love the SAS2 lite. I'm getting a bit more experience with free motion sewing now - and actually can work it pretty good. I found some fuzz on my needle, but it turned out it was the adhesive. Not a problem and could just use my fingers or an alcahol swab to wipe it off. I don't think that I would want a product any thicker.

I am going to do a little test of my own with the two products, but I have a feeling I will return the Wonder-Under since I don't need a bunch of both! lol
Thank you Emily. I recently finished a very heavily fused appliqué piece using steam machine light, I also really love the temporary tackiness. It really helps with designing with the fabric. I also quilted it with my Bernina Q20, this was the first time I quilted with that machine through appliqué, and I really struggled with thread, shredding and other issues. I’m wondering what thread a needle you were using because it seemed like the quilting was perfect. Thank you.
Heat n Bond is not permanent. It's most commonly used for applique and you have to sew your applique piece on after you iron onto your main piece as the glue is not permanent.
Lite Steam a Seam and Lite Steam a Seam 2 were the only fusibles with a temporary adhesive, so none of the other fusibles would have worked to build onto parchment paper.
I didn't do enough quilting for the needle to get gunky in this video, but I'm sure if I had done more it would have gotten a little sticky. It would have been easy to clean off just with my finger nail though!

I’ve been using an Organ anti-glue embroidery needle, size 75/11. I guess I’ll try to find the Schmitz non-stick. I have it in an 80/12, so I might try that first. Thanks for your help!

I changed the needle before I got started, and it's a Schmetz non stick 90/14 needle. I used 100% polyester 40w thread.

I don't put water in my iron. Is it possible to just spray with water from a spray bottle to activate the steam a seam 2 lite?
Yes! In fact, our iron is terrible at steaming so this is what we do.

I understood that Steam-a-Seam 2 is so named because it has adhesive on 2 (both) sides.

What about using them on parchment paper and transfer to fabric?
Lite Steam a Seam and Lite Steam a Seam 2 were the only fusibles with a temporary adhesive, so none of the other fusibles would have worked to build onto parchment paper.

I didn't do enough quilting for the needle to get gunky in this video, but I'm sure if I had done more it would have gotten a little sticky. It would have been easy to clean off just with my finger nail though!
To prevent funkiness, you just need to steam, steam, steam…both sides and that prevents it!

It's a Schmetz non-stick 90/14 needle. I usually don't have problems with a gunky needle, but if I do I just wipe it off with my finger.

No gum! And if it ever does get gummy, I just use my finger to wipe it off.
But, are they repositional?
No, the only one that was repositionable was the SAS

Note: You cannot sew through "Heavy Duty" wonder under. It will break your needle. Please do not recommend this version. Only the normal wonder under.
