Thats the big difference between old and new Spongebob. Spongebob was a childish adult that clashed with Squidwards negative outlook on life. He wasn't a tonedeaf sociopath. In most episodes, he didn't even actively seek out Squidward, he just did his own thing and Squidward would get annoyed by his good mood.
I love this episode. Good thing we don’t exist in some alternate reality where Squidward and the Bikini Bottom Super Band get interrupted by Travis Scott, right? That’d be embarrassing.
With Squidward, the general shtick to most good Squidward-centric episodes (most, not all-in fact Band Geeks is an exception) is this: Secretly, even to himself, he actually likes doing the things Spongebob does. In fact, he might even secretly like Spongebob. However, he has such an inflated sense of self-importance that he sees Spongebob-and the stuff Spongebob likes-as being beneath him. He refuses to eat Krabby Patties, for example, because he has delusions of sophistication. He's sophisticated and mature, no way he'd be caught dead eating fast food! Same thing with blowing bubbles, snowball fights, and playing in a cardboard box. This is an irrational, self-defeating mindset. But it's one that's very common, and therefor creates a relatable character.
In seasons 1-3 Squidward felt like a character created by the fear of growing up, how when you get older you have to give up what you truly enjoy for what adults see as appropriate for your age. With this in mind, while Squidward does have hobbies people associate with adulthood, such as his garden and interior decorating, he looks down on Spongebob's hobbies because he sees Spongebob as a guy who needs to grow up. It's not until he experiences the hobbies however that he realizes that they are fun. Like you said, the krabby patty is a great example, another being the box or the piece of paper. He knows it can be fun, and he ends up trying to, with one succeeding, and with another not. With the box, when he kicks it and he hears stuff breaking, his mind begins to create a world where what he hears is real, and continues on when he imagines robot pirate island. Looking back, he reminds me of middle school, where he'd be the kid who'd end up trying to be cool like the other kids so he could fit in. Even after the 'cool kids' have told him no though, he's tricked himself into believing that being like them is what he wants, when instead being accepted is his goal. Then we have the middle schooler who doesn't try to be like the cool kids, and just wants to be himself. While this cool copycat calls him out, now believing that this other kid is just immature, he realizes at times that he's just like this kid, but is in fear of being shamed for acting the way he used to. Almost like a "if I look back now, can I keep going forward?" situation, where forward is being the ideal person people want him to be, and back being the prson he wants to be.
I kind of see the dynamics between Spongebob, Squidward and even Patrick as being like brothers. Squidward would be the oldest: wanting to be more "grown-up", seeing his younger siblings as immature and embarrassing (cramping his style), and yet also feeling rather protective of them at times and even occasionally enjoying being included in their misadventures. Spongebob and Patrick, as the younger brothers, do what other younger brothers do: pester and annoy Squidward in their attempts to get him to play along with them. They also, in some ways, look up to and even try to emulate him. There's an underlying element of friendship and love layered on top with the daily quirks and annoyances that come from such a close relationship.
In two episodes I can think of off the top of my head, Squidward outright admitted he liked Spongebob as a friend. The April Fools episode, and the Graveyard Shift episode. He's even stood up for Spongebob which shows he does care. In Pizza Delivery, near the end when the customer yells at Spongebob then slams the door which causes him to cry, Squidward slammed the pizza right into the a*sholes face.
I believe that the reason that is episode is so beloved is that for the first time in the series at that point, he actually "won". Basically, Squidium was the Squidward to Squidward's Spongebob.
Squidward and Squilliam are arch-rivals. Like Mr. Krabs and Plankton. Other than few episodes like Employee of the Month, I don't believe Squidward and Spongebob can be considered rivals.
I think I mentioned it on another video under someone else's comment. I feel like your right, the fact that squidward initially lies to squiliam about having a band, and then everyone pulls through at the end and is able to pull squidward out of the lie and squidward is able to 'flex' in squiliams face.

The thing that hit me hardest (in a good way) about that ending freeze frame, was the realization that this was truly a moment of victory for Squidward. He really does get the happy end this time. No comical misfortune to taint the moment, nothing falling apart at the last second, resetting the characters to baseline before fading to credits (which is the usual for Squidward) - just a moment of joy, with no strings attached. No karmic sabotage. The freeze frame drove it home that the often cruel forces of fate, that govern the shows reality, were actually gonna leave him alone for once. Knowing that you didn't have to brace for a calamity really allowed it to sink in that he was truly happy. I want a canvas print of that freeze frame lol
Although ironically, it’s a win he doesn’t deserve, the episode makes a little self aware jape at that with SpongeBob pointing out he hasn’t truly cared about the others or done anything for them. To PRETEND he was some big hero like a firemen or some guy in an ambulance as motivation
I was in marching band back in high school, and we would sometimes have day long rehearsals. About halfway through each semester, before a big competition, I would bring this episode for us all to watch on DVD during lunch break. Getting to watch this episode on a big projector screen with everyone quoting along and laughing was great, and it will always be one of my fondest memories from that time.

Does anyone else genuinely cry when they watch this episode? I haven’t gotten through it a single time without shedding tears. That final freeze frame by itself is enough to get me choked up.
This episode holds such a special place in my heart. I remember when we first got TiVo and were able to record things, I would come home and watch the SpongeBob recordings every day. Secret box and band geeks was the one episode I always had saved and would watch it a couple times a month. Just my favorite hands down and really a feel good episode

There's something just so nice and pure about seeing Squidward being genuinely happy and having things go his way for a change and not just as some sick joke or kick the dog moment. Squidward is flawled, but i feel deep inside he wants to be like Spongebob, he wants to have the same optimistic point of view in life as Spongebob does, but he can't bring himself to, he's delusioned into being sophisticated, matured, the superior, he wants to be the adult of the group, the smart one, he wants to be siperior to everyone, because in his mind, it means being somebody, it means achieving something, and it means bragging life on Squilliam's longass stupid face and tell him to shove it
This episode is also fantastic because of the dialogue. Every single line is well done. If an episode nowadays had dialogue even half as good as Band Geeks, it would become an immediate hit
There were some recent bangers, I was a huge fan of that spongebob impersonation episode. But no episodes can just give that vibe of the first 4 seasons tbh
Its great when we were young because it was funny. But its great as an adult because we feel like squidward and feel empathy for him and happiness when he also becomes happy
A wise person once said, “You either die a Spongebob, or live long enough to see yourself become a Squidward.” But honestly though, this is still one of the single best episodes of television I’ve ever seen. Very little has come close.
This has been my favorite episode since childhood. Every character who appears has some kind of funny moment even when they don't speak, its so quotable that everybody who has ever seen the show will know exactly what you're talking about when you say "is mayonnaise an instrument?", and to top it all off it ends with Squidward winning! The guy is perpetually miserable and it's satisfying as hell to see him actually enjoying himself with the entire cast!
Band Geeks is the most heartwarming episode ever because of how Spongebob and Squidward work together, rather than them (or, well, Squidward) being sort of "enemies".
This episode has always been my favorite, it's funny, has emotionally charged moments, focuses on a character that we don't get too much from usually. Then there's that performance always makes me so hype, seeing Squidward first nervous and not knowing what to expect, and Sweet Victory starts, and it's that oh shit, it's gonna pop off in the best way moment of pride, with genuine happiness from a character that's usually feeling negative about their life. The heart and soul of this episode is something special, and this video explains it perfectly.
I always related to Squidward, even as a child. It was entertaining to see him suffer occasionally, but it was hard not to see reality's reorientation to screw him over as unsettling. As a result, "Band Geeks" and "Krusty Towers" were my favorite episodes, as he is neither so cruel that you can't root for him nor constantly screwed over by the irrationality and unfairness of his world. (I'm looking at you, "Club Spongebob.")
Just seeing the episode makes me genuinely happy, I grew up with spongebob, and just that one 20 minute episode makes me reminisce my childhood, and with Stephen Hillenburg gone, it hits even harder, that is why this episode will be the best to me

4:43 I actually realized that was from SB-129 when Squidward went to the ground and said “FUTURE!” So cool to see a very rare moment where an old episode references another old episode.
I disagree about this being a perfect introduction episode. Characters like Mrs. Puff, Pearl and Larry are very much in the background here and the true joy of their presence comes from knowing them beforehand. Like, I wouldn't have enjoyed Mrs. Puff sliding on her knees slamming that guitar so much if I hadn't known she was a "stuck-up teacher" figure. Also, I think it can't be overemphasized how important the song choice was. The perfect twist that they actually _did_ perform well only would have worked with the perfect song, and they fucking nailed it. That said, excellent video! I love that I just watched a 10+ min essay about fucking Spongebob of all things and can have a serious and analytical discussion about it.
This pretty much sums up why i think spongebob is as popular as it is As a child you relate to spongebob where as when you grow older you start to shift from spongebob to squidward.
this episode really has it all. memes and memorable moments, a number of hilarious gags and a lot of heart. another episode that I always come back to when thinking about the best spongebob episode is spy buddies. probably the funniest episode ever imo.
My favorite and what I believe to be one of the most underrated episodes is Can you Spare a Dime. It has some of my favorite moments in the series plus it hits hard knowing that even the kindest of individuals like spongebob have a breaking point.
Spongebob is one my favorite shows. My uncle who was like a father figure too me loved it, and would always invite me and my brother to watch it with him and my cousin. He passed away this year, and its been real tough without him. This video just brought back a lot of good memories about him. Thank you!
I watched this video at a crucial point in my life about accepting a second degree in Music Education and becoming a band director or moving on and traveling becoming a ski guide. I am accepting it now.
The ending blew me away I always loved when animated characters went into the real world, and not in the wierd way that we imagine what they look like on the internet, the song at the end also ROCKED.
I always considered it the best episode because everyone wins. the only character to lose is Squilliam and that works because Squilliam wins at life and imposes his success on those lesser than him making him a natural villain. No one cares or roots for Squilliam because he doesn't deserve it. when everyone wins you feel as if YOU win. thats why i love it and it feels so cathartic.
I remember watching this episode and loving it so much that everytime Spongebob came on I prayed for it to be this episode, but I've never seen it again after that first time. So for the longest time this episode was kind of mythical to me, until I became old enough to realise you could just browse the internet...

I am pretty optimistic usually, but not as of recent because people didn't want me to be happy and outgoing... to go with an analogy that actually isn't related to spongebob but pokemon: before i moved to a new job with housing included, i was ash's dragonite. after i was fired for reasons i can only assume are BS to cover up their annoyance... i was iris' dragonite... i am better now but my attitude is right in between the 2: trying to have some optimism and positivity while having a more cynical look on life and seeing the evil and hypocrisy in many people... the 6 months i had with that job was the biggest scam i ever had... as well as a valuable life lesson in trust and who you should believe in...

We got to see, in this episode, Squidward getting the chance to experience GENUINE happiness. Like the kind of happiness that gives you that warm feeling in your stomach, like it feels like you've finally, after all these years, figured out how to be happy at a CORE level. I'll tell you the secret to achieving this (since it feels like I just recently figured this out): SERIOUSLY, take the time to figure out - 1. Who you want to be. 2. Where you want to go. 3. Be okay with how others view you. THE ANSWERS TO THESE THREE QUESTIONS DO NOT NEED A SPECIFIC/CORRECT ANSWER, but they do need an answer. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE EVERY SINGLE STEP PLANNED OUT, but just fill in what would make you the happiest, and go from there. My path to happiness began when I STOPPED WORRYING ABOUT "INVISIBLE PRESSURES." These pressures stemmed from my childhood, all the way into adulthood, and usually came from stereotypes and opinions I heard or saw on things I personally found interesting or enjoyed (Video games are my example). When you think about it, it's YOU who is holding YOU back. It's YOU who keeps placing these pressures on yourself, not others. It's YOU who is telling YOURSELF to stop pursuing your interests. But at the end of the day, this post is not an attack on YOU. YOU we're thrust into this world without a manual, so it's okay if you're not in a good spot right now! YOU can change that! YOU have more influence on your own life than I think you may realize. THE PATH OF HAPPINESS IS A LONG ONE, BUT IT IS ACTUALLY ACHIEVABLE !!!! If there was a quick and easy way to PURE HAPPINESS, don't you think you would have heard about it by now? This shit CAN take a long time, so don't feel like you have to know all the answers by tomorrow, or even sometime soon. You have THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AHEAD OF YOU, YOU CAN DO THIS !! Let me leave you with some inspirational quotes that have really hit home with me (which I suggest you write down any quotes you see during your daily life that hit home with you): "You don't have to be the smartest in the room to be the happiest." "You didn't come from your parents, you came THROUGH THEM. Be who you want to be, not who your parents want you to be!" "Learn how to love yourself before you try to learn how to love someone else." It took me 23 years to figure it out, so please, don't try to rush this process. But always remember that regardless of how special your case may be, no one was born on this Earth to be miserable. YOU can do it! :)
Man, why can't there be more episodes like this and Pizza Delivery where Squidward isn't straight up tortured, and he actually joins in on Spongebob and what he's doing, instead of just being annoyed on the sidelines
I always wondered if this episode was meant to be a series finale if SpongeBob didn't get renewed for a third season (very real possibility for Nicktoons at the time). Honestly, given the full cast arc, it leaves on a much more satisfying note than the Movie, which was Hillenberg's stated canonical end of the series.

This episode holds such a special place in my heart. I remember when we first got TiVo and were able to record things, I would come home and watch the SpongeBob recordings every day. Secret box and band geeks was the one episode I always had saved and would watch it a couple times a month. Just my favorite hands down and really a feel good episode

Sponge bob realized that he didn’t need to be one with the jellyfish and that he threw a great life away for nothing
Krabbs realized there was more to life than money when he sold spongebob to the Dutchman
Sandy knew she was home this whole time and didn’t need Texas
Patrick knew his real parents
Plankton realized the grass isn’t always greener
And squidward the most abused, depressed introvert of all characters gets a happy ending

There's something just so nice and pure about seeing Squidward being genuinely happy and having things go his way for a change and not just as some sick joke or kick the dog moment.
Squidward is flawled, but i feel deep inside he wants to be like Spongebob, he wants to have the same optimistic point of view in life as Spongebob does, but he can't bring himself to, he's delusioned into being sophisticated, matured, the superior, he wants to be the adult of the group, the smart one, he wants to be siperior to everyone, because in his mind, it means being somebody, it means achieving something, and it means bragging life on Squilliam's longass stupid face and tell him to shove it
Honestly, this episode could've been the perfect series finale for Spongebob.
This episode is also fantastic because of the dialogue. Every single line is well done. If an episode nowadays had dialogue even half as good as Band Geeks, it would become an immediate hit
There were some recent bangers, I was a huge fan of that spongebob impersonation episode. But no episodes can just give that vibe of the first 4 seasons tbh
Its great when we were young because it was funny. But its great as an adult because we feel like squidward and feel empathy for him and happiness when he also becomes happy

This has been my favorite episode since childhood. Every character who appears has some kind of funny moment even when they don't speak, its so quotable that everybody who has ever seen the show will know exactly what you're talking about when you say "is mayonnaise an instrument?", and to top it all off it ends with Squidward winning! The guy is perpetually miserable and it's satisfying as hell to see him actually enjoying himself with the entire cast!
I literally shed a tear when you kept playing the bit where squidward jumps into the air.

Band Geeks is the most heartwarming episode ever because of how Spongebob and Squidward work together, rather than them (or, well, Squidward) being sort of "enemies".
Wow a video about spongebob?! A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
This episode has always been my favorite, it's funny, has emotionally charged moments, focuses on a character that we don't get too much from usually. Then there's that performance always makes me so hype, seeing Squidward first nervous and not knowing what to expect, and Sweet Victory starts, and it's that oh shit, it's gonna pop off in the best way moment of pride, with genuine happiness from a character that's usually feeling negative about their life. The heart and soul of this episode is something special, and this video explains it perfectly.

The first time I saw this episode was the first time I was so moved by a medium that I cried.
I always related to Squidward, even as a child. It was entertaining to see him suffer occasionally, but it was hard not to see reality's reorientation to screw him over as unsettling. As a result, "Band Geeks" and "Krusty Towers" were my favorite episodes, as he is neither so cruel that you can't root for him nor constantly screwed over by the irrationality and unfairness of his world. (I'm looking at you, "Club Spongebob.")
Squidward just having fun at the end of Krusty Towers is one of the most wholesome things ever and I love that.

Just seeing the episode makes me genuinely happy, I grew up with spongebob, and just that one 20 minute episode makes me reminisce my childhood, and with Stephen Hillenburg gone, it hits even harder, that is why this episode will be the best to me

4:43 I actually realized that was from SB-129 when Squidward went to the ground and said “FUTURE!” So cool to see a very rare moment where an old episode references another old episode.
I disagree about this being a perfect introduction episode. Characters like Mrs. Puff, Pearl and Larry are very much in the background here and the true joy of their presence comes from knowing them beforehand.
Like, I wouldn't have enjoyed Mrs. Puff sliding on her knees slamming that guitar so much if I hadn't known she was a "stuck-up teacher" figure.
Also, I think it can't be overemphasized how important the song choice was. The perfect twist that they actually _did_ perform well only would have worked with the perfect song, and they fucking nailed it.
That said, excellent video! I love that I just watched a 10+ min essay about fucking Spongebob of all things and can have a serious and analytical discussion about it.

My favorite and what I believe to be one of the most underrated episodes is Can you Spare a Dime. It has some of my favorite moments in the series plus it hits hard knowing that even the kindest of individuals like spongebob have a breaking point.

Spongebob is one my favorite shows. My uncle who was like a father figure too me loved it, and would always invite me and my brother to watch it with him and my cousin. He passed away this year, and its been real tough without him. This video just brought back a lot of good memories about him. Thank you!
This is probably my favorite episode of SpongeBob ever. I'm a former band kid and we would watch this during practice so many times.
I watched this video at a crucial point in my life about accepting a second degree in Music Education and becoming a band director or moving on and traveling becoming a ski guide. I am accepting it now.

They should’ve postponed the episode until shortly before the SpongeBob movie.
I always considered it the best episode because everyone wins. the only character to lose is Squilliam and that works because Squilliam wins at life and imposes his success on those lesser than him making him a natural villain. No one cares or roots for Squilliam because he doesn't deserve it. when everyone wins you feel as if YOU win. thats why i love it and it feels so cathartic.
This was the first episode I saw for years. I had a mini DVD player with a tiny CD like disk of just this episode. Good ole times.
I remember watching this episode and loving it so much that everytime Spongebob came on I prayed for it to be this episode, but I've never seen it again after that first time. I am pretty optimistic usually, but not as of recent because people didn't want me to be happy and outgoing... to go with an analogy that actually isn't related to spongebob but pokemon: before i moved to a new job with housing included, i was ash's dragonite. after i was fired for reasons i can only assume are BS to cover up their annoyance... i was iris' dragonite... i am better now but my attitude is right in between the 2: trying to have some optimism and positivity while having a more cynical look on life and seeing the evil and hypocrisy in many people... the 6 months i had with that job was the biggest scam i ever had... as well as a valuable life lesson in trust and who you should believe in...

(This is going to be a huge "who asked" moment, so bare with me). I love this video for a very specific and personal reason. We got to see, in this episode, Squidward getting the chance to experience GENUINE happiness. Like the kind of happiness that gives you that warm feeling in your stomach, like it feels like you've finally, after all these years, figured out how to be happy at a CORE level. I'll tell you the secret to achieving this (since it feels like I just recently figured this out): SERIOUSLY, take the time to figure out -
1. Who you want to be.
2. Where you want to go.
3. Be okay with how others view you.
THE ANSWERS TO THESE THREE QUESTIONS DO NOT NEED A SPECIFIC/CORRECT ANSWER, but they do need an answer. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE EVERY SINGLE STEP PLANNED OUT, but just fill in what would make you the happiest, and go from there. My path to happiness began when I STOPPED WORRYING ABOUT "INVISIBLE PRESSURES." These pressures stemmed from my childhood, all the way into adulthood, and usually came from stereotypes and opinions I heard or saw on things I personally found interesting or enjoyed (Video games are my example).
When you think about it, it's YOU who is holding YOU back. It's YOU who keeps placing these pressures on yourself, not others. It's YOU who is telling YOURSELF to stop pursuing your interests. But at the end of the day, this post is not an attack on YOU. YOU we're thrust into this world without a manual, so it's okay if you're not in a good spot right now! YOU can change that! YOU have more influence on your own life than I think you may realize.
THE PATH OF HAPPINESS IS A LONG ONE, BUT IT IS ACTUALLY ACHIEVABLE !!!! If there was a quick and easy way to PURE HAPPINESS, don't you think you would have heard about it by now? This shit CAN take a long time, so don't feel like you have to know all the answers by tomorrow, or even sometime soon. You have THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AHEAD OF YOU, YOU CAN DO THIS !!
Let me leave you with some inspirational quotes that have really hit home with me (which I suggest you write down any quotes you see during your daily life that hit home with you):

I always wondered if this episode was meant to be a series finale if SpongeBob didn't get renewed for a third season (very real possibility for Nicktoons at the time).
Honestly, given the full cast arc, it leaves on a much more satisfying note than the Movie, which was Hillenberg's stated canonical end of the series.
Chocolate with Nuts is a close second, but this is absolutely my favorite episode.
Seeing him so happy in this episode brought tears to my eyes.
