It's a bit too high-gain for my preferences, but at least it was stripped down & more raw. I was second row from the stage, right in front of Ed at the Bonner Springs, KS show from this tour, and I was getting blasted in the face with Ed's stage volume. His sound was glorious! I was damn near giddy at how raw and punchy, how articulate it was. You could hear every scrape of every pick attack. It was back to being just a ferocious, in your face tone. Wife and I saw Michael and Sammy a year or so ago. He’s in a much better place now.

I've waited 30 years to find a vid with Mike on lead vocals. Just stumbled onto this. I like it. Always wondered why he didn't do more lead vocals in on all the past albums.

It was a pretty awesome sound he had coming out of his guitar in this video, actually he had a really great sound throughout the three or so years that Gary Cherone was with them. Eddie's sound sounded really great live during that time
@@crazycooper1024 Yep less schmoo, more tone, i like the tone of Eddie when he was using the rack stuff, the SPX90 detune etc but gosh this 1998 tone, pure, raw, gnarly, almost straight in the head, it felt like Ed' weren't afraid of anyone, no effect, in your face tone. This era had a smell like EVH and the band were trying to channel some late 70's early energy they had and in this respect i feel Eddie did pretty well, the tone, the raw performance which contrasted with the lush performance of the Sammy era, were really there, but not much the public, i think Ed wanted more support, people went into stupid feud over Van Haggar and Van Halen debate... it was the end.

Man that must've been a whole lotta work for him to do that but he absolutely killed it though!! I could hear how it was a little bit hard for him to do both even though he pretty much killed it but I could still hear how his voice was almost wanting to give out on him by the end of the song!

The brothers spent so much time looking for a new lead vocalist when they had Mike all along! It is a lot a work to do both so I can understand why they didn't have him full time lead vocalist. But damn Van Halen would've been one hell of a trio!

But, it was supercool having one of my all time favorite guitarists sitting right there, if only for 5 minutes.
George "Mr Scary" Lynch is a beast on guitar. His time in Dokken was great.

This was my favorite post-1984 Van Halen tour. Eddie looked happy and played well, and it was the first tour since Dave left the band where the focus was on Dave-era tunes instead of Sammy-era tunes.
The tone boys and girls, that tone. So good.
I was at that show. The band were really on fire & Cherone did a great job.

@Kent Horvath lol not really .... sammy composed if not more hits than eddie himself so i'd say thanks montrose aka sammy aka micheal for sticking around cause he was the heart and foundation of van halen no jokes you could of substracted eddie and it would have worked. He could of been replaced with an other shredder or what ever but the back vocals and vocals and melodic were all sammy and mickey.

I did like some of the songs of VH's 2012 album and David sounded just okay....but I would still like this version of Van Halen a WHOLE LOT better with Gary Cherone and Michael Anthony singing lead!! By a LONG shot!!!
I also wouldn't mind if Sammy was still in the band because he can still really as well and that's why Sammy's band with Mikey in it still sounds unbelievable! They are still so good! And I think that awesome 'plan' that Sammy Hagar says he's got for the "reunion" with Van Halen that he's REALLY hoping will happen is EPIC! To have David Lee Roth AND Sammy Hagar WITH Van Halen and possibly EVEN have Wolfgang play some backup guitar and Rhythm guitar in is even more EPIC!!! So bring it on Eddie!! Let's do this!!!

Michael Anthony is vital. It’s not truly Van Halen without him. Of course it’s a moot point now that Eddie is gone. But Mike deserves more credit, more love. He is a positive and upbeat personality. Glad to see he has moved forward with Sammy. Good on ya mates.

Whenever I watch VH clips, the first thing that comes to mind is how much Michael gave to the band. He had a great stage presence. Could sing lead, and we know about his backup vocals. They filled in the sound of the vocals during all the lead singers tenures. The second thing that comes to mind is just how disrespectful the Van Halen Brothers were towards Michael. Forcing a pay cut on him during the catastrophic Sammy Hagar reunion, including relinquishing all royalties and merchandising, but from the 1984 album forward, and limiting what he would earn from previous albums. Michael lost millions. And then Alex and Eddie fired without bothering to tell him. Adding insult to the WTF, the scrubbed Michaels's image from the official VH web-site. But there was so much backlash that they restored his images.
Michael took the high road and did his job and never trash-talked the band or their management.
