    P. Follosco Thanks for watching & great questions! Here are the answers:
    1. Only a thin sheet of paper is needed for the spine, but technically, if you wanted a super durable spine, I guess you could use cardboard instead.
    2. Do NOT put glue on the spine (where the textblock touches the inside cover). That's because you want the pages to be able to bend and open flat.
    I hope your journal turns out nice! Let me know if you have any more questions. :)

      Hi Gabriella Balagna! Thank you for answering my questions! I am enlightened. I have already finished making my own project but I have used a different way of binding. I'm planning on trying out your style for another bookbinding project. I subscribed to your channel btw. Thanks again and continue making great videos! :)

    Omg!!!looks so cool!!!good job :) the part I don't understand is the sewing part:(

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically for the sewing part, you'll just need to follow the video very carefully. I recommend just pausing the video after each step of sewing. Basically, you're just weaving in and out (or going up and down through the holes).
      If you have a more specific question about how to sew it, (for example how to tie the knot), then just leave me another comment and I'll try to explain it better.
      Hope this helped! :)

    Wow this is awesome. I have a question, can the page lay completely flat 180 degree?

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peacelover1212 Hi there Peacelover1212. Thanks for leaving a comment! The pages do lay completely flat.
      However, depending on the thickness of your paper, you might need to gently hold down/press down the page to keep it open all the way. Instead of holding it down, you could simply use a binder clip on each side of the journal to hold the pages open.
      I hope you decide to make a journal!

    This is such a great tutorial! Super informative and really helpful! I would like to try to make this soon cuz I have nowhere to put all my art. But just one question...
    Would it be okay to use watercolor paper? The paper is really thick so I guess maybe I'd have to make smaller signatures. Please give me an opinion on this cuz I don't really specialize in making journals. Ehe...

    Hi! Awesome tutorial! I just have some questions:
    1. Why are you using only a thin sheet of white paper for the spine? Why not use cardboard with the same thickness as the cover's?
    2. Why should I not put glue on the spine?
    Thanks! :)

    thanks for the great tutorial! Mine did NOT turn out as beautiful as yours because I thought I needed to make changes :/ lol - oh well! It will still work for my purposes and I understand now why you do things a certain way! I did not want to waste paper, so thought that I could just trim off the edges of the signatures. That does not work. do you know why? Because there is no support! duh.. BUT I learned! Did you know that you can not make the back spine less than a quarter inch from the coverplates? Do you know why? because it won't open or close! duh. BUT I learned! lol THANK YOU! this is a fine tutorial!

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dawn Stover Don't feel bad at all, Dawn - I'm still making mistakes! For example, I made the cover for the journal in this video too big by accident and it sticks off the right edge too far. (Although I got the measurements wrong, I'm pretty positive I mentioned in the video not to do that.) Thank you!

  • @ArtystkaI
    @ArtystkaI 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello!
    Great video! Love this notebook!
    I have the most important question - what kind of paper did you used on cover???
    Because most of which I tried - shreds! Very badly!
    I wold be gratful for every info you can give me! Is there some special kind of paper for covers? Like... more elastic or something? :)

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Irena Dżyga Hi Irena; thanks for leaving a comment! I hope you find a good paper to use on the cover. I believed I used this brand of kraft packaging paper:
      www.amazon.com/Scotch-Postal-Wrapping-Paper-Length/dp/B00PV0NUQA/ref=sr_1_2?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1445033979&sr=1-2&keywords=brown+kraft+scotch
      It's just plain paper - it's not meant for notebook making or anything. Let me know if I can help with anything else! Thank you!

    Hi. I've watched several videos like this, however, they're using fabric to cover the chipboard or something like that? but i want something plain like yours. is that a paper? if so, what kind of paper did you use. thank you very much. your video is very informative, by the way.

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got it from "Blick Art Materials". It doesn't have a label on it so I'm not sure what it's called. You can look for "matte board", "chip board", or "bookbinder's board". I also sometimes use the chipboard from the back of an old notepad or dissemble a photo box.

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Madison!
      I wouldn't recommend using scrapbooking paper for the cover because it might tear along the spine. Test a scrap piece of paper by folding it back and forth, if the paper rips/tears, it's probably better to find something else to use for the cover. Fabric is always an option.
      Have a great day!

    I really loved this tutorial. You do a wonderful job explaining things and showing what needs to be done. I would like to ask what type of cardboard you used? I used corrugated cardboard and recycled a brown paper bag for the cover. Has a rather rustic look that I like very much. But I would love a smoother finish. I recycle cereal boxes and cardboard food containers, but I feel as though this cardboard might be a bit thin. Thank you for this video!!

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! I'm so glad you made a book!
      Yes, cereal boxes are probably too thin. The cardboard I use is similar, but thicker. I call it chipboard. It's hard/stiff/dense and not corrugated.You can buy something similar at the art store "dick blick" but I'm not sure what it's called there.
      However, I do not usually buy chipboard. I just take the back cover off an old sketchpad/notebook. Also, sometimes I take apart a chipboard box. For example, i have bought these boxes (www.michaels.com/recollections-memory-box/M10023305.html?dwvar_M10023305_color=Black) at Michaels, taken them apart, and used their chipboard.
      Have fun!

    Such a great tutorial! Thanks for posting it. If I want to use fabric for the cover, do you recommend glueing the fabric to paper first before glueing it to the cardboard cover?

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DeepPurpleSkies Hi there! Great question. I've made fabric journals before, it's a fun way to customize your journal. So, here's your answer:
      Glue the fabric straight to the cardboard covers.
      (However, if the fabric is a light color light white, make sure you can't see any cardboard through it. If you can, then glue plain paper to the cover, let it dry, then glue the fabric to the cover.)
      Bonus Tips ;)
      Test out your glue on the fabric first and make sure it doesn't show through.
      Fabric glue or tacky glue might work well.
      Spread out the glue before putting the fabric on so none seeps through the fabric.
      Iron the fabric before gluing it down if it is really wrinkled/creased.
      Remember to let the covers dry flat under some heavy books before continuing with the project so they don't curl up from the wetness of the glue.
      Hope your journal turns out really well. Have fun! :)

    this is really great, I'll definitely try making one when I have some free time and good paper to use for it! :D I have a lot of wrapping paper but it is a little thin, would it work if I tried gluing it onto a piece of cardboard/thicker paper to use for the cover, or should I just find something else?

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrapping paper might not work well for the cover, maybe test out a scrap piece and see if it works well or not. Other materials to use are fabric and kraft/packaging paper.
      I hope your journal turns out awesome!

    Hey! Thanks for the tutorial! I have a few questions:
    1) Do you use regular paper for the cover? How thick does it has to be to hold well?
    2) Does the book lay flat when you open it? It's important for me because I want to make a sketchbook. I didn't recognize the stitches you used for the paper block, is it coptic stitch?

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome!
      1) I used brown "packing paper". It's thicker than normal paper. Very thick paper does not seem to wear well, as it usually tears on the spine. You should probably try something with a medium weight or use fabric instead.
      2) The book will open all the way flat. However, you have to hold it open or the pages will start to close. It depends on the thickness of paper you use though. A thinner paper would stay open better. I didn't not use coptic stitch, but it's similar to that. I have made coptic stitch notebooks before and they seem to stay open a little better.
      Let me know if you make a sketchbook or if you have any more questions!

    • @SoVuS777
      @SoVuS777 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabriella Balagna Thanks! Finally got all the materials needed! I will surely make a sketchbook using this tutorial pretty soon. Though, I am still a little concern about the strength of the cover. I prefer paper cover because it's easier to work with. Will Bristol paper\cereal box cardboard be good?
      In case I would use fabric, how can I maintain the shape of the spine?

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome!
      A thinner cover would work fine. "Maintaining the shape of the spine" shouldn't be a problem. The text-block already has a pretty firm shape, even without the cover.
      I'm not sure what you mean by using fabric though - no paper/cardboard under it? I'm not sure how that would work. If you do use fabric, you could wrap it around some thin cereal box cardboard first to make the cover.
      Let me know if I answered your questions or not and tell me if you have any more.
      I hope the sketchbook turns out great!

      Danielle Smith Thank you! I'm so glad you're going to make one. There are soooo many different ways to decorate the covers that I decided to just compile a list of ideas for you:
      1. fabric instead of paper
      2. draw something in pen/marker (anything that won't smear or fade)
      3. stickers
      4. duct tape or washi tape
      5. paint (not sure if that would get ruined over time)
      6. patterned paper
      7. print something off onto the cover paper or simply glue it on
      8. monogram or initials
      9. write a favorite quote in fancy handwriting
      10. draw a geometric pattern
      11. use a metallic marker or white gel pen
      12. glue on sequins or gems
      13. use stencils
      14. glue on ribbon
      15. google even more ideas!
      I hope these ideas help. Have fun!

    where can i find cardboard/chipboard? can i find somewhere in a book store?

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Riri Mashhor I have never purchased any chipboard, but here are some ways to get it:
      1. taking apart one of those cheap photo cardboard photo storage boxes they sell at Michaels/Joanns.
      2. The back of a notepad/notebook.
      3. The back of a sketchbook or drawing paper pad.
      4. The cover of an old book.
      5. Packaging/box made from it.
      If you still can't find any chipboard, you might be able to find some in a store if you live in a big/populated town or have a bookbinding store. Otherwise, you could google it online, just make sure you buy it in a thick enough weight.
      Thanks!

    • @GabriellaBalagna
      @GabriellaBalagna  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alessandro Pierfelice Alessandro, sorry to hear that; I have a couple suggestions - at least one of them should work. (You could try each one out with some scrap cardboard and paper first.)
      1. Spread in the glue with your fingers really well so that the entire surface is evenly covered.
      2. Try using a different glue, maybe a glue stick or a thicker glue.
      3. Use tape to stick the paper to the cover.
      4. Use tape on the outside, but where the edges fold over use glue.
      5. If nothing else works, you'll just have to use a different type of paper.
      I hope one of these suggestions works out! Thanks so much for watching the video. :)
