Original General........I remember David Rodigan playing a wicked tribute on his show on Capitol Radio London 30 years ago, and the general feeling that the new dance hall music had lost its most original pace setter RIP mr Earl Robinson
The great General echo was a dj way before his time yellowman stole his lyrics he was on top in ja in 1980 when he was shot what a talent King rankin slackness with sterofonic sound madoo also papa echo R.I.P ECHO.
Hail up blakbeltjonez, I was the organiser of that show at Priory in 1980. It was to raise funds for the graduation committee. All the info you have stated about Echo is 100% correct, he was a great loss to the dancehall biz. I had left to come to England by the time he was killed.
@aiken80 Earl Robinson aka GENERAL ECHO RANKING SLACKNESS, i never got a chance to see him live @ his peak in 1979-80 he was tearin up ja with his funny & slack lyrics a legend before yellowman, i have all his music from 1978-80 Angelina the general bun bun drunken master arleen classic 3 albums rocking & swing & of course slackest lp in the world with winston riley follow fahion i can go o, King echo was due in england dec 1980 sadly he was shot in halfway tree ja cops killed ECHO R.I.P
@shamalamadingdong148 KING ECHO started way back in 1978 with sterofonic echotone sound system yellowman use go to those dances to here echo lyrics, i have cds echo djayin in 1980 original model with me& mad over me,
Yo my friend echo was the originator of slackness & different toasting styles & skillz do you have that video footage or can you get "where its at episode of echo & madoo " That would be insane cuz there is no video or pics of him.
I really wish I could hear the whole of this session and it's such a pity Echo died the way he did. People forget that he had reality culture lyrics too. Yellowman, Professor Nuts and Ringo combined together could not equal the X rated lyrics of Echo as great as they are.
All three of those entertainers made much better songs than General Echo as influential as he was. Yellowman had charisma/voice, Professor Nuts was witty and Johnny Ringo was a great hype man.
there is no JBC-TV archive video left.... JBC was strapped for cash and taped over episodes of Where It's At, Ring Ding, etc.... there are pictures of Echo around, that's bullsh*t to say otherwise. video would be a different story. Echo and Madoo appeared at a fund-raising dance at my old school (Priory) in May 1980 - now that is insane! i had already left JA, but it really happened (Lone Ranger was a no-show). i'm about your age, aiken80.... 46, left in '76 when things got a bit rough.
Yellow outright stole Echos lyrics, this caused a feud between them. Yellow would even go listen Echo live and copy his lyrics (facts). But to answer your question.....King Stitch as a DJ started doing it, but Echo took it to the next level. SO YELLOW say thanks for his death.
This is true but all DJs have stolen or borrow from each other. Echo had to have stole from someone too. Yellowman definitely sang/DJ these songs better than General Echo could have because he was more charismatic.
@@tommyaintgotnojob I agree that in those days a lot of them copied lyrics because dancehall was more underground and most of Jamaica wasn’t privy to dance performances. So Yellow went mainstream with them on records capitalizing on his unique condition and YES charisma. But Yellow didn’t pinch lyrics, he took the whole thing word for word. He did it with Echo, Ringo, Metro… You saying yellow did it better than Echo and that Echo stole too tells me you really don’t know The General. There is no DJ dead or alive who can say Echo stole their lyrics. Yes yellow was good but was never original, the main reason he made it was because of his condition. The Next bad DJ after Echo was the Major. Admiral Bailey buss off him.
One of the greatest DJ, Stereophonics one of the best Sound System back in them days. I knew Echo, Big John, Flux. I grew up in Rock Fort.
tell us more about echo...is he was a cool man?why police shoot him??

I remember spending $5 for a copy of Sex Educational Class in 79.

echo by a few years. he didn't start slackness, but he took it to a level that before was only hinted or suggested....

It's just lyrics to entertain the people...
