    I'm honestly tempted to grab the Age of Darkness set, and, when I have the money, some FW Word Bearer kits (specifically the Gal Vorbak and Mhara Gal), and run them in my 40k Word Bearers squad, as well as make a HH Word Bearers army. Also some of the characters would be great as Proxies. Like Zardu Layak would make a fantastic Master of Possessions, his Bodyguards could be additions to a squad of Possessed, the same way Greater Possessed are now, Erebus could be run as a Dark Apostle, and Kor Phaeron could be run as a Lord in Terminator armour. And, of course, Argel Tal would make an amazing Daemon Prince. Plus, if I use my 40k Word Bearers as HH Word Bearers, I don't think the mutations and corrupted armours would make my opponent too upset. They're Word Bearers after all.

    • @SolvableMattB
      @SolvableMattB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      im doing the exact same thing, im running my 30k army as kinda the prequal to my 40k word bearers. so my daemon prince is still a praetor, my dark apostle is just a chaplin, and instead of cultists we use drop pods and run the Last of the Serrated Suns rite of war.

    Ian, excellent video, as always. Sadly, Aug 2023 and 32 of the 76 Legiones Estartes options for GW 'The Horus Heresy' are NOT available from GW's official home page here in Australia (and we can't buy them from UK shops, because that is blocked by legal prohibition by GW itself), so you can't purchase them. It's a lesson to anyone trying to come to the party late. But what is totally unreasonable is that, try and buy everything when it was available and you needed to find AUS $6,515 (that's UK 3,349 Pounds; or US $4,255). I love GW's product range; I hate their pricing and stock availability policies.

      They're essentially fatalistic one man close quarters shooty lads. Gulliman decided to codify them as a unit because a similar kind of psychosis seemed to be strangely common among the legions as far as I remember.

      The Raven Guard have a gene flaw called the Sable Brand. (Pre-Primarch XIXth Legion called the afflicted Ash Blind.) It shares some similarities to the Black Rage, except the afflicted Astartes will be completely silent. If you are familiar with how the Carcharodons fight, it's like that but with the self-preservation of a Kriegsman.

    I think Tarantulas turrets are put in FA, in case You want build static army but are short on Heavy Support and Elite slots.
    Same reason why FA in 40k is equally place for fast units... and dumping ground for inferior gun platforms/units.
    Fast Attack is perfect place for Your Spore Mines and Chaos Spawns (I would argue Primaris turret thingy also should go there)... Would You spend Elite or Heavy slot on them?
    Also, there is a chance that "borrowed" Imperial Guard tanks will not olny come in plastic, but will be available for 30k and 40k.

    At 17:58 I think you made a minor mistake; you referred to the unit as a Legion Scorpius but I am given to understand that it's called a Legion Friendmaker because if you bring more than one launcher at S8 AP4/auto wounding at AP2 on a 4+ to hit roll if it doesn't move, uses a large blast and causes pinning from the inevitable Instant Death casualties then you'll probably need to start making new friends.

      Its not *that* strong. Out of los makes it super inaccurate, and completely useless against any army that isn't legiones astartes.
      That said, 120 pts is WAY too cheap

    • @steweygrrr
      @steweygrrr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eater_of_garbage_ I'll take "what is a nuncio vox for 500, Alex" for the scatter and it's even better against the mostly 4+ Solar Auxillia whose close order rule forces them into big easy to hit bricks and you don't need to rely on Rocket Barrage to get through their saves. _EVERYTHING_ should fear them when using the Ironfire RoW because that makes them 1d6" scatter before nuncio rerolls when shooting at targets within 12" of Iron Warriors infantry and it makes them S9 vs vehicles, dreads, automata and buildings. Fun for everyone!

    • @eater_of_garbage_
      @eater_of_garbage_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steweygrrr "If you pay at minimum 75 points above the cost of the unit, choose a specific ROW (one that is worse than HOO) and legion, it becomes good against an army that nobody plays"
      Also its a single template blast weapon, it'll never be better than lascannons against vehicles (even before the -2 S for flare shielded vehicles), dreadnoughts or automata. Also nobody has ever taken a building outside of being funny. Again. Its a good unit, but its not a be all, end all. It'll make its points back sure, and its great at killing t4 death stars. I 100% agree that its the best artillery option LA have in the libers.
      And if you're playing LA against auxilia, and need the upper hand with a scorpius, I don't know what to tell you other then maybe see a doctor about that tumour in your brain.

    Hey fellow Ian,
    Question about paint color, does everybody use flat matt paint for a reason? I never see glossy, reflective or metallic paints.
    Is it just one of those things, that everybody follows about the grimdark-style?
    Or are there actually rules about paint?

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The vast majority of miniature paint has a matte/satin finish, but matte varnish is common. It's become more common since people started sharing their hobby online, since gloss finished models are WAY harder to photograph accurately without tons of reflections.
      There are rules about painting, but not to do with matte/gloss finish. They generally tend to be either 'to attend this event your army must be painted' or 'if you've painted your models as Blood Angels you have to use the Blood Angels rules'.

    I'm interested in the way that the 40k versions of a lot of this kit (like the dreadnoughts and terminators) are the "older, cruder" variants in 30k.

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the idea is that.the crusade era was a time of great progress and everything was getting more advanced, but in the aftermath of the heresy the Imperium were so stretched they just defaulted to the most easy-to-maintain variants of whatever they had. So Tartaros armour and Contemptor Dreadnoughts both disappear in favour of simpler models.

    • @ArbitorIan

      Yeah, not for everything but most of them either have 40k rules, or are armed in a way that means the models can be used in a 40k marine army even if the squad is called something different.

    • @ArbitorIan

      Indomitus have the slower movement of Cataphractii (6") but also the lower invulnerable of Tartaros (5+).
      Tartaros would get an inch more movement and Cataphractii would get you a 4+ invul.
      On the plus side, power fists work out cheaper!

      By the later stages of the Heresy, a lot of the Traitors had begun to exhibit more of the signs of their new patrons, especially the four who dedicated themselves to one of the gods.
      By the time of the Siege of Terra, a lot of the World Eaters where more or less similar to the survivors in the 41st millennium.
      A lot of it would really depend on the story you wanted to tell with your army.

    • @tinyfishhobby3138
      @tinyfishhobby3138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends a lot on how you build your army. 30k is generally played at a higher points level than 40k. For me, it’s not uncommon for my army lists to have 60-70 infantry models as well as tanks and transports.

    • @ArbitorIan

  • @TheRovingRebel61
    @TheRovingRebel61 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video, just thought I'd mention though that Praetor is an actual legion rank; they do not represent your common captains as you seem to suggest. Centurions represent your basic line captains, commanding companies of around 100 marines each. Praetor's are a high ranking space marine officer who usually command a Chapter of around 1,000 space marines or more and are therefore considerably more rare. That's (narratively) why you can't take them in games of less than a thousand points.

    • @ArbitorIan
      @ArbitorIan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Praetor and Centurion are the official Principia Bellicosa grades but it depends on the Legion if the ACTUALLY use them. In the Sons of Horus, there is no rank above 'Captain', but company commanders like Captain Loken and First Captain Abaddon are definitely Praetor-equivalents, while the 'Captain' of the Reavers is outranked by the company Captains. Similar with Space Wolves.
      I can't actually think of a character in the novels whose given rank is Praetor?
