the mites are white like the food in the social stomachs so I would guess that this may have something to deal with them (probably) eating some of the ants food, maybe you could change the food source to something with a clearly different color and see if it indeed feeds from the ants tropholaxis ritual

I actually have to write a paper for school on kleptoparasitism and it completely slipped my mind to check if arachnids practiced this form of parasitism as well. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, now i can look into this further ^_^

@@samuraiex2043 I could be describing the part wrong but I know I saw a red dot and last time I saw red dots on ants they were the parasitic blood sucking mites that killed the Golden Empire.
I think you should create two colonies of ants one with the more healthier and the other colony should be with mites in some healthy ants to observe what will happen that way if it doesn't work out you don't lose the whole colony
Wouldn’t say ideal, you can’t just split a colony like that, and they might kill the second queen and this could harm the entire colony which is still young, the split colony would spend all their time trying to get back.
With everything you do for the insect community, you definitely deserve at least one species named after the channel I'd name the facehugger the Ovomorph or the Ovomite, after the egg-like capsule that contained a Facehugger in Alien. And the fact its body looks like an egg
Hickey mites is also the perfect kind of naming scheme lots of animals have. Because of their mannerism, the name is easy to remember, but it sounds like a serious name when you don't think about the meaning of hickey.
Any update on the ants and facehuggers yet? Also, you might find a smaller pair of tweezers if you look for some ingrown hair tweezers. I have a pair that are really sharp and could grip onto a tiny mite like that, I think.

If you want to find a new species of something look at fungi they evolve very rapidly and scientist estimated we only recorded 5 percent of species you can do this via an app that you can take pictures of living things and see their species and other facts you may discover something new and help scientists keep track of invasive species this is a big problem in florida alot of amphibians have invasive species here with no natural predators just make sure which ever app you use is sent to natural conservation efforts in your area
The genus facehuggi sounds very funny. Like, I can just imagine a doctor like "oh no sir, u require immediate attention as u have been infected by facehuggi mites"

I realized that these episodes start with a queen and end with the colony going to a big ant terrarium and some extra clip of the colony that moved to a terrarium
Cool. Last time I saw a queen ant and I don't know why I was separated to other ants. I wanted to confirm if it's a queen so I put her in a vial and she layed 11 eggs overnight. I was so happy for her. I put her back where I found her, just in a safer area and put those eggs there too. I hope she had her own colony now since it's been month when it happened.
You are almost as good as anime on episodes when it comes to filler. 5 minutes of fight scene content, 15 minutes of building up, flashbacks, and monologuing.
I called it a couple of episodes back in the comments. I'd recommended an experiment to test the hypothesis that they were stealing food during trophallaxis by feeding the ants dyed food to see if the mites inherited the color. ;)
While it is sad and scary (and nerve wracking) to see the mites on the ants, at the same time, it's actually exciting to make a new discovery and a new addition to science. Also, AntsCanada, I wanna say that I've been following your channel for the past three or so years now (since about 2017, 2018ish) and because of this wonderful channel, I actually gained a new respect for ants and I dont really see them as just creepy bugs (if only I can say the same for bees though...). I learned a lot about ants from you. While I probably won't become an Ant Keeper, I will keep watching this channel and will keep on learning about them, and I wanna thank you for all of your hard work on educating all of your viewers on ants (and a few of your other beloved insects, arachnids, and pets). I find it amusing that AC spent years keeping ants, got so excited about discovering new ant species, he bought a plot of land for it, and yet, in the end, might discover a new mite species, accidentally, in a test tube. Haha, this is better than any soap opera.

I think the most scientific thing to do would be to keep the mites with the colony and allow the woodland warriors to be specimens for mite research. If the ant colony thrives, then we can learn a lot about the mites, and even if the colony doesn't survive, that will still reveal a good deal of information. Feeding the colony a bit extra wouldn't hurt either.
The most scientific thing to do would be keeping the population of mites at a managable size until there's more info to go about/tests you want to conduct. But at the last part you aren't thinking about ant safety anymore, and this is an ant keeping channel first and foremost. The primary risk is the problem with population control. If for example in nature the population is being kept in check because the unstable food availability causes the mites to have moments of mass starvation, the mite population in this ant house might quickly explode, since there's a constant supply of food. And at the point that every ant wears a mite, if it turns out that the mites tire the ants and take most of the food away it might indirectly end up with a lot of dead ants because of exhaustion. I don't know about the reproduction speed of these ant mites, but I know that spidermites that parasitize plants can go from 1 to 1000 in mere weeks, so caution is really advised until you make an informed decision to study them. The most scientific thing to do is to start 2 new colonies simultaniously, then infect 1 with the mite and let the other one be normal. This way it is possible to observe the relative mite/ant % and you can observe how growth and development of the colony are hindered. (for quantitative analyses these tests have to be repeated a handful of times, but there shouldn't be a shortage of new queens as long as he's keeping the current population healthy)
Might I suggest the name Carabrazo Acfamilious from the Spanish words Cara (face) and Abrazo (hug) and obviously AC family. I think that is I nice scientific name and a common name could be the kleptomite if it really does steal food. I think they should be kept for research btw

Before my opinion on ants were annoying little bugs but now after watching your video and by that I mean totally hooking me on starting the Phoenix empire series my opinion completely changed. You should absolutely keep them in there, no matter what happens to the colony. The advance of science and research is too powerful. Take this opportunity that you may never get again. It is more important than removing them just to remove them
@OLIVER YAP there's more than one mite, as the colony grows, so do the mites.. If you keep a sharp eye out during shots of the ants, you'll see the mites on quite a few
I completely agree! Plus with the colony being so small, even though it would be sad and unfortunate, it wouldn’t matter too much because the colony is not as developed. I think this is a great learning opportunity!

Since our carpenter ants are the Woodland Warriors, and the mites seem to just be stealing food. How about "Woodland Bandits" for the mite population Sort of an idea of Robin Hood and his Merry Men
I am sorry but having a latin name made out of multiple words for the species is confusing and I am not even sure if it's even allowed. When you see more names than 1 it is because you also see the genus (small group of closely resembled species) mentioned for clarity. example: The genus name for the cabbage family is Brassica. The cabbage gets the name oleracea, so it's noted as brassica oleracea. The genus name for hominids is homo. Humands get the name "sapiens", so that makes homo sapiens. unless the entire genus was undiscovered, a name like you suggest simply won't be possible.

True, but if they’re an interesting new species, it’s worth keeping them to study especially if they don’t steal that much food. It’s unlikely to have a big impact as if it did the mites would die too and it wouldn’t go well.
@@theworthysoul Parasites drain their hosts till they die but cannot survive long off them..yet parasites are still very much a thing! It's not a good adaptation in captivity but in wild colonies it probably works out as they can grow much larger and the parasites could spread to other colonies.

To be fair there are so many uncatalogued, unidentified insects. I think the estimate is about only 10% have been formally classified.

I think you should create two colonies of ants one with the more healthier and the other colony should be with mites in some healthy ants to observe what will happen that way if it doesn't work out you don't lose the whole colony

If you want to find a new species of something look at fungi they evolve very rapidly and scientist estimated we only recorded 5 percent of species you can do this via an app that you can take pictures of living things and see their species and other facts you may discover something new and help scientists keep track of invasive species this is a big problem in florida alot of amphibians have invasive species here with no natural predators just make sure which ever app you use is sent to natural conservation efforts in your area

I used to find queens all the time but never had a container, so now i always carry a test tube with me just in case
Cool. Last time I saw a queen ant and I don't know why I was separated to other ants. I wanted to confirm if it's a queen so I put her in a vial and she layed 11 eggs overnight. I was so happy for her. I put her back where I found her, just in a safer area and put those eggs there too. I hope she had her own colony now since it's been month when it happened.

I called it a couple of episodes back in the comments. I'd recommended an experiment to test the hypothesis that they were stealing food during trophallaxis by feeding the ants dyed food to see if the mites inherited the color. ;)
While it is sad and scary (and nerve wracking) to see the mites on the ants, at the same time, it's actually exciting to make a new discovery and a new addition to science. Also, AntsCanada, I wanna say that I've been following your channel for the past three or so years now (since about 2017, 2018ish) and because of this wonderful channel, I actually gained a new respect for ants and I dont really see them as just creepy bugs (if only I can say the same for bees though...). I learned a lot about ants from you. While I probably won't become an Ant Keeper, I will keep watching this channel and will keep on learning about them, and I wanna thank you for all of your hard work on educating all of your viewers on ants (and a few of your other beloved insects, arachnids, and pets). I think the most scientific thing to do would be to keep the mites with the colony and allow the woodland warriors to be specimens for mite research. If the ant colony thrives, then we can learn a lot about the mites, and even if the colony doesn't survive, that will still reveal a good deal of information. Feeding the colony a bit extra wouldn't hurt either.
The most scientific thing to do would be keeping the population of mites at a managable size until there's more info to go about/tests you want to conduct.
But at the last part you aren't thinking about ant safety anymore, and this is an ant keeping channel first and foremost.
The primary risk is the problem with population control. If for example in nature the population is being kept in check because the unstable food availability causes the mites to have moments of mass starvation, the mite population in this ant house might quickly explode, since there's a constant supply of food.
And at the point that every ant wears a mite, if it turns out that the mites tire the ants and take most of the food away it might indirectly end up with a lot of dead ants because of exhaustion.
I don't know about the reproduction speed of these ant mites, but I know that spidermites that parasitize plants can go from 1 to 1000 in mere weeks, so caution is really advised until you make an informed decision to study them.
The most scientific thing to do is to start 2 new colonies simultaniously, then infect 1 with the mite and let the other one be normal. This way it is possible to observe the relative mite/ant % and you can observe how growth and development of the colony are hindered. (for quantitative analyses these tests have to be repeated a handful of times, but there shouldn't be a shortage of new queens as long as he's keeping the current population healthy)

@OLIVER YAP there's more than one mite, as the colony grows, so do the mites.. If you keep a sharp eye out during shots of the ants, you'll see the mites on quite a few
I completely agree! Plus with the colony being so small, even though it would be sad and unfortunate, it wouldn’t matter too much because the colony is not as developed. I think this is a great learning opportunity!

I am sorry but having a latin name made out of multiple words for the species is confusing and I am not even sure if it's even allowed.
When you see more names than 1 it is because you also see the genus (small group of closely resembled species) mentioned for clarity.
example:
The genus name for the cabbage family is Brassica. The cabbage gets the name oleracea, so it's noted as brassica oleracea.
The genus name for hominids is homo. Humands get the name "sapiens", so that makes homo sapiens.
unless the entire genus was undiscovered, a name like you suggest simply won't be possible.

True, but if they’re an interesting new species, it’s worth keeping them to study especially if they don’t steal that much food. It’s unlikely to have a big impact as if it did the mites would die too and it wouldn’t go well.
@@theworthysoul Parasites drain their hosts till they die but cannot survive long off them..yet parasites are still very much a thing! It's not a good adaptation in captivity but in wild colonies it probably works out as they can grow much larger and the parasites could spread to other colonies.
