- My mother combs my hair Poem by Chitra Banerjee divakaruni.
In 1976, she left her home in Calcutta, India, to live in the United States. She was 19 years old. Since then, Divakaruni has straddled two worlds. As a poet and fiction writer, she gives a voice to immigrants who, like herself, struggle to create a new life while maintaining ties with her homeland.

My Mother combs my hair-
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
My mother combs my hair and I pretend
She’s not crying. You carry a firefly heart, she says.
They will try to put you out, try to
Swallow you whole
And you will let them.
You are going to break your parent’s hearts
And they will break yours too.
But you are not finished yet,
Always changing, always becoming;
Wanting to be more than what your bones can
take.
You’re going to step outside,
Taste chance and possibility on your tongue
And paint your hands the color of goodbyes.
When the birds sing you into flying south
You will pick up and leave.
You will learn goodbye
Is a word they will forgive.
“Leave, to remember how to come back,” Alaska
