This was awesome. I read this story multiple times for my English class and failed to understand it until finding your video on here. Definitely showed me a whole new meaning to this great story. Thank you! We as women now are so fortunate to live without the restrictions and limited freedom that others like ourselves once had to endure!

You are seriously an admirable person for devoting your entire channel to scholarly information. Thank you. And please, I have a couple of questions about your analysis if you don't mind trying to help me with them. Isn't it true that Mrs. Mallard could have died for several different reasons?...1) The "joy" of her husband returning after she thought he was dead. 2) The "joy" of her freedom which she realizes she has. 3) Being stripped of her joy of freedom after she realizes that her husband is alive and back to make her have to be in subjection under him again. I'm writing a literary analysis paper for college in which I have to form some sort of argument about this story. Do you think that my argument should go something like this..."Instead of dying from "joy," Mrs. Mallard actually dies of being stripped from the joy of freedom which she had just discovered was greater than being in subjection to her husband."If you could provide any additional insight I'd REALLY appreciate it!! Thanks!!

Great analysis! I didn't catch onto the symbolic window when I first read the story, but now that makes sense.
I thought it was too confusing how one would suddenly turn slowly from sad to free and happy in just moments after hearing of a death of a beloved. But then again, I didn't consider the fact that some women were being treated as inferior back in those days, so that makes sense.

English teacher here. Thank you for pointing out that her genuine grief at the beginning shows affection in the marriage. Other commenters read too much into this relationship--abuse, forced marriage, age difference--and twist the story into more than the simple story needs. I tell students to remember the historical context. Women of her status were constrained by social mores especially in Louisianna post-Civil War when only white, land-owning men had any real power. Women went from their father's "ownership" into marriage at a typical early age--late teens-- and only gained control of their own lives when their husband died. That is the freedom she saw. Release from the subservient role cast upon her by society. It would not have occurred to her husband to treat her any other way. Always look at the historical and cultural context when examining literature and be cautious of projecting your own 21st-century experiences on other time periods. Kate Chopin is fascinating. Look her up.
