- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a new immigration law as an attempt to crackdown on employers that are hiring undocumented workers. The law would require undocumented workers to verify their legal status through an online database and would ban local governments from issuing IDs to the undocumented. NBC News' Guad Venegas has more.

Filling out an i9 form or using e-verify is already required, federally. It's just not enforced by many states. I'm not a fan of Desantis, but in this case, I agree. He's enforcing something that is already required. I think this is important for the safety and security of undocumented workers, as well. These employers need to start paying people a liveable wage if they want to hire Americans.

“Undocumented” workers are a necessary part of the equation that contributes to Florida’s Billion dollar economy. They buy goods and services, as well as provide labor in jobs that few Americans want because they are difficult. If he wanted to be a genius, develope a plan that provides a path to citizenship. I will never begrudge anyone who wants to provide a better life for their family. Stockholm syndrome is real. I wish many of my latino brothers and sisters realize… it doesn’t matter how blond your hair is or how white your skin looks. Business owners are worried about their profits and not the immigrants. Businesses hiring illegal workers must be punished by heavy fines just like in the UK.
Maybe, instead of illegally entering the US and living in fear, they could consider applying using the many legal methods already in place.

Well duh!! Citizens don’t have to worry about that law, only immigrants do. By the way, I disagree about your statement when laws “don’t create fear”. Laws do create fear, the reason why you claim that laws doesn’t create fear is because you never experienced a law that negatively affected you. Let’s say for example that you are an immigrant that came to the United States for a better life. However, you’ve been informed and aware that the United States has passed a exclusion law that would certainly affect your life. You would be scared because it is your future livelihoods, you dreamed of going to here because you think no other place is a great as the United States of America. Now your life has been unexpectedly turned around for the worse.
So if these people arrived here legally, they have nothing to worry about. I see this as an absolute win.

@@gabrielgallardo505 We used to do those jobs until your relatives came to do them for $2 an hour. We're not used to living with 25 people in one house so $2 an hour isn't enough to pay the rent.
An undocumented friend, now 28, was brought here by parents at age 6. He can't get DACA, doesn't know Mexico or anyone living there...has never even visited! The path to legal immigration is decades long waiting. He's happily employed by employers who appreciate his work and don't want to lose him. There's literally no good ending. It's as if an innocent person is wrongfully imprisoned.
That’s literally my situation… I’m 23 and I’m running out of plans… I’m married no children, I lost my job for the same reason this law is doing. My work was great but they didn’t wanna avoid getting into trouble … now it’s impossible to find a job … I’m scared for sure..
And so? It's the stupid soft on illegal immigration that has caused this problem. How about the millions of people that wait on question all over the world to enter US legally, how about them. Why reward someone for breaking the laws.

Just to let everyone know... there is a federal law forcing employers to file an i9 form that uses a federal database to check for legal right to work. DeSantis just made a state version of it.
I worked HR and ya we would get stop work notices for certain individuals and we were forced to fire individuals who didn't have the legal right to work.
@daveb6125 I was just HR. All I know is first we'd get a letter from the feds to fire a confirmed unauthorized laborer then the state sends some lacky to confirm (we usually send him the termination paperwork) but if we get caught with too many laborers on the roster the state fines is $5k per violation and the state can decide to revoke a business license depending on the severity of the violation.
You were using eVerify which is not a law to use; however I9s and along with ID verification is required. It’s not usually legally advisable to use eVerify for a variety of reasons including being held liable if anything goes wrong with supplying personal identifiable information to a third party, even if it is the federal government. Another issue is opening the door to wrongful termination since eVerify can only be done post hire. The one place we used it at, in the 2 years I worked there we must have had a dozen times where a new hire was flagged illegal erroneously. Again though it’s all a legal thing, most lawyers for each company I’ve worked for (all less than 100 people) have all advised against it but there are lawyers that develop correct procedures to enable eVerify use and keep their client safe from any legal trouble.
And actually if your company is a federal contractor you may very well have to participate in eVerify, sorry just popped in my head.

You’re overlooking the provisions of the law that also ban migrant and refugee workers who are in the U.S. *legally*. These are in full violation of federal immigration laws, not that the “governor” cares.

@@3x157 A lot of these farms are now corporate. So they are not hurting for money. Subsidy programs exist because people are better at lobbying for certain things. If they actually invest that money into agricultural products that would keep Americans healthy, then it would be different.

All these workers need to be vetted and TAXED like anyone else. The business owners need to be responsible for healthcare and housing. They also need proper health screening before coming into this country just like my grandparents received when they came here LEGALLY
I found it hard to believe but I went and researched it. Undocumented immigrants pay somewhere around 9-$12 billion dollars in taxes per year. Which they ultimately do not benefit from.

My two cents: A. no other countries treat illegal immigrants as nice as America. Many European countries crack down on employers hiring illegal immigrants and the employers have to pay hefty fines. B. there are short-term visas available for seasonal labor jobs that natives don’t want to do. For instance, Sweden and Finland hire Thais to pick up wild berries at these two countries during harvest seasons every year.

At 3:00 when she says "Not too many people are lining up for these jobs" we already know that. A lot of these farmers already tried to hire locals and most of them quit after a few days. When we refer to these jobs as "back breaking labor" there's a reason for that, in addition to being physically demanding, people can develop health problems after doing these jobs for prolonged periods of time (my grandmother developed a spinal deformity in the later parts of her life) locals do not want to do these jobs, and the produce being picked is too sensitive for automation, or farmers would have started using machines a long time ago like with any other agricultural product. Locals _will not do thses jobs._

From an American who has lived all over the world- I had to respect Mexico, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Costa Ricas laws. I couldn't overstay my visa or work without a permit. How many of y'all remember Lawton, Childs governor of Florida back in the 90s I believe. Who took the basic journeyman license regulation out of Florida I was a new electrician at the time and it's severely cut down on our earnings because now you didn't have to have a license to be an electrician anymore or a plumber. The workforce was saturated with unlicensed workers who didn't have to have the training. And it was clear that this was done to keep up with the booming economy and filled it with nonqualified workers. So think about when you come into this country, come in legally and learn how to do a trade. What I have found these workers send their money back home to other countries to support their families in other countries. I've worked with many people from Brazil that are not legal and are still doing this to this day in 2023. So it supports other economies other than ours.
It supports the economies of both. If they chose to send money back to their families (some have no family and therefore find it easier to leave) they must still pay to survive. Also if an employer takes taxes from their wages automatically, immigrants aren’t getting any refunds for overpayment.
I thought that the fact that they get a MUCH lower salary was helping US economy, or at least, "helping" the company for what they work for. Also, somehow, they get tax deductions from their salary checks, AND they don't send 100% of their salaries to their countries, they spend part of that money here in the US for living costs 🤷🏻♀️ So it's a win- win game, but in long term, even though they pay tax during their work life, they won't have any retirement savings because they won't be granted for that benefit since they're illegals, so when they're old, and tired, they're going to go back to their countries and those countries are going to have to deal with those retirees that during their productive age never work for those economies.
This will certainly create labor loss in Florida because Americans would never work in these conditions nor for the low income. This will create a huge deficit in the farming industry and will only increase the cost of vegetables and fruit because they will either have to buy from other states or even from other countries. This is so frickin funny. How long until they can't feed all the tourists this summer? Tourists might as well not go to Florida.

This is about taxes. First some of the workers say they do not have papers but actually have a green card or citizenship but choose to work as undocumented and thereby not pay taxes. 2nd, the big construction companies are allowed to give visas to many specialized undocumented workers..again have to pay taxes and the companies have to pay for more in benefits. In the long run paying taxes and benefits makes USA a better infrastructure and a better country.
And how to you know that? Ridiculous to think that after waiting for years for a green card & citizenship (let alone qualify) that they would prefer to be paid under the table. They will never get social security benefits that way.

Undocumented workers actually pay between 9:00 and $12 billion dollars in taxes per year annually. They do it through some kind of thing called an ITIN. I don't know what that is but you can go look it up because I wondered about it myself. When I read a book about a man who was here for 25 years without papers and actually went to college, became a reporter for the Washington Post and won a Pulitzer prize. So for good or bad and I don't know what it means. But before you say that they don't pay taxes you might want to go look that up. It doesn't solve anything of course, but neither does the way we're doing things now. We should create a committee to seriously look at immigration reform. It's something that has been needed for decades, but everybody's just fighting about it and nobody's coming up a solutions. You know it's a problem. We need a solution. In the meantime, check the tax thing out. You might be surprised. Source is... Mostly the IRS.
