John’s letter always gets me emotional. Giving his life for Elena was the best thing he could’ve done for her and the first selfless thing he did for her.
I would say that John had let her be adopted by his brother and sister-in-law in the first place in a pretty selfless way (he realized he wasn't cut out to be a father and made sure she would have loving parents) and then made sure to remind Elena he still considered her adoptive parents her actual parents (when Elena worried that he had pointed out a similarity between her and Isobel that it was actually a similarity to Miranda). His problem is he let his prejudices do her emotional harm, but he did try to be and often was selfless in his intentions with regard to her well-being (while still being a completely unlikable jerk most of the time- the complexity).
While all the others were bickering like children (looking at you Damon and Stefan) or betraying others (looking at you Elijah), John was GETTING THE JOB DONE. Maybe with a little more time, he would've found a way to kill Klaus lol We have to stan.
I always cry when Elena tells Jenna to switch her humanity off so she won't be scared anymore. Jenna is so innocent and she just looks confused and terrified. It's heart breaking.
Fun fact: When Joseph Morgan was hired to play Klaus, he initially agreed to the role on the condition that Klaus would die this season, as he didn't want to be stuck in a multi-season serialized show. Klaus was written to die in an episode at Elijah's hand. However, Joseph ended up liking the role so much that he changed his mind and begged the showrunners not to let Klaus die. The showrunners were excited and gladly rewrote the script to allow Klaus to survive, keeping Joseph Morgan around. Interestingly, Elijah was also supposed to die much earlier in the show, back when he first encountered Stefan and Damon and was stabbed. The showrunners changed their minds because they loved the actor Daniel Gillies and wanted to make the Originals feel more powerful, so they kept Elijah's character around.

@@westfinest20 As someone who has watched the show well over five times, I am telling you the hate is forced. In what way is she contradicting. “Wanted to be included in everything” Why wouldn’t she? I think it's sad they didn't give John more scenes with Elena, struggling with the sacrifice and all, especially when the writers KNEW they were gonna kill him off. I mean, same for Jenna tbh.
I haven't seen a comment saying this yet so I'm saying it. Elena telling Jenna "just turn it off" rips my heart out every time because they both knew it was over for her. To me its like when Gwen Stacy takes that last breath before hitting the ground in Spiderman, just accepting death because you can't do anything about it is heartbreaking

For me it’s nowhere near the saddest in TVD. Anna is #1 saddest death for me in tvd. Cants ya the others though because they’re way later in the series. Anna’s story has always been the most compelling though, every time I rewatch this series (& I’ve done it a lottttt) that scene always get me in my feelings & another one that has yet to come involving her that got me obsessed with the song “this woman’s work” by Greg Laswell which made the specific scene I’m referring to so much more emotional & sad that it also gets me every freaking time.
I'm also so worried about damon because there is no cure for a werewolf bite. I don't want him to die, he's my favorite character. My heart also broke for Stefan because he's about to lose his older brother. When damon walked into the graveyard by himself broke my heart further. Everything feels so hopeless now.
I don’t know if you guys picked up on this, but when they’re in the cemetery and we’re hearing John‘s voiceover from the letter, they spend a long moment cutting back-and-forth between Damon and Elena. Go back and rewatch that part and listen to the words that are being said. That was definitely intentional. They were telling us some things there, mmhmmm. 😌
Skinny love is actually a breakup song ,as proclaimed by the song writer himself. The love is "skinny" meaning undernourished, starving ,not likely to last the distance. You guys reacting to TVD has become one of my favorite things to watch on TH-cam! Especially when Jeremy is on-screen.. Or Matt. Or Alaric.. lol You make me laugh out loud with the comments! xD
Rob, the bullets Matt had weren't given to him by Damon, but Damon was surprised to find them in his gun last episode and through that realized that Matt knew about the vampires. I love (love, love) Elijah, but he actually really screwed the pooch in whatever deal they had. Granted, Elena and the guys betrayed the deal first, but if Elijah was still supposed to be protecting Elena's loved-ones, he failed. He really let her friends Tyler and Caroline be taken, only to then be replaced with her aunt and then didn't complete his actual one part in the plan... c'mon my guy. I also love Damon, and I understand why he was unsure Elijah's potion would work, when it was untested 500 years later, but if he hadn't forced his blood down Elena's throat and it had worked, John wouldn't have sacrificed himself and Jeremy and Elena might still have one blood relative elder left alive (granted, it would be John). John's letter and "Skinny Love" destroy me every time. One thing about Bryce saying neither of the guys could give Elena bio-children- while I'm sure John would actually be open to her adopting, I think he was more hoping that if she got to grow old as a human and wanted children, she would have moved past Stefan for the 145-year 17 y.o. reason, if not the vampire one, by the time she wanted to have kids.
I think part of John also hoped that STEFAN would move on from Elena. Stefan knows Elena doesn't want to become a vampire, that she wants children, and a normal life he can't give her. Given John's ermmm natural hatred of vampires and Stefan's selflessness, it's easy to imagine a scenario where John would imagine Stefan walking out of Elena's life to allow her to have a normal life, and a safe life. I mean, at this point alone, were I in love with Elena I was a hella vampire attracting death all around me, after everything she's lost, I'd be like "ermmm maybe I should just... get out of her life so that she can heal/not lose people anymore" lol (now granted, Elena is the Döppleganger and all, but at this point they'd think Klaus will not do anything to her anymore since well, he got his little sacrifice and all).

One of the things I wish Klaus hadn’t done: using Jenna as the sacrifice. Elena didn’t run. He should have used someone else. Anyone else. And I always lived Elijah and I understand now, but at this time I was like noooooooooo. Lastly, Damon’s eyes were a shade of ice blue on another level in that last scene.
6:24 I don't blame Bryce for not liking Katherine after giving up an innocent girl like Jenna for Klaus f-ed up ritual. The way she is so selfish and stringing damon along for 145 years always made me hate her. My heart breaks for Elena because she lost her parents recently, her aunt had to die right in front of her, her uncle/dad dying too. Elena and Jeremy lost a lot of people at such a young age. This was such a depressing episode. I always cry when Elena tells Jenna to turn her humanity off so she is not scared anymore. I hate Klaus for what he did to Elena and I hate Elijah for betraying them and running away.
@@siaahale13 yes??? She literally made everyone think she was stuck in a tomb for 145 years when she wasn’t in. That’s the reason Damon came into town to save her. Katherine knew he was searching for her for years but didn’t care.
@@amberaugustine9948 that’s called being insensitive, not stringing along. up until he opened the tomb, he literally thought she was in there the entire time only to find out she wasn’t. im sure damon wasn’t even an after thought to her. that woman wanted to be hidden, and she did it well. katherine rarely cares about anyone but herself. this is quite literally her character.
@@siaahale13I would consider it to be the same difference since Katherine knew he was in love with her for years but strung him along as a human and as a vampire in my opinion. And she’s selfish and that’s been established too.
@@amberaugustine9948 since katherines a manipulative and selfish character, her having two boy toys back in the day makes sense. i just think she started falling for stefan and gained feelings for him, and probably didn’t have the… mental capacity (?) to handle that with damon. but yea you’re probably right, same difference. i was just thrown off by the statement “stringing him along”.
And there we have it, John Gilbert officially adds his name to the short list of fictional characters who were so absolutely unpalatable they had to actually DIE to be redeemed 😅 Well done, though, fair play to him! 🙏👍 Most of us who couldn't stand him at all before, are now like, yeah, okay, you did a good thing in the end, John, I'll give you that 🤷❤
Aunt Jenna shouldn't have died. I would have loved seeing how she navigated this new supernatural world she just discovered. They could have done so MUCH with her character, and yes eventually they could have turned her into a vampire. But oh well.
Uncle John FINALLY did something honorable. But also, how the hell are they explaining all these deaths to the people in town? Nobody thinks “hmm, this is weird”?

Damon's and Klaus's characters, and their development throughout the show, carries this show for me, not to mention the Salvatore brothers' bond.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONEEE
Looking back, it was a good thing that Elijah did not kill Niklaus, considering how the vampire sireline works.
Crazy to think it’s one specific moonstone that does that shit.
Well done Uncle John. Stefan did call it but a bit late.
My comfort creators 🫶🏼
Damon just casually sent Greada to the Gulag with the rest of her Family 💀🤣
6:24 I don't blame Bryce for not liking Katherine after giving up an innocent girl like Jenna for Klaus f-ed up ritual. The way she is so selfish and stringing damon along for 145 years always made me hate her. My heart breaks for Elena because she lost her parents recently, her aunt had to die right in front of her, her uncle/dad dying too. Elena and Jeremy lost a lot of people at such a young age. This was such a depressing episode. I always cry when Elena tells Jenna to turn her humanity off so she is not scared anymore. I hate Klaus for what he did to Elena and I hate Elijah for betraying them and running away.
stringing damon along for 145 years??
@@amberaugustine9948 since katherines a manipulative and selfish character, her having two boy toys back in the day makes sense. i just think she started falling for stefan and gained feelings for him, and probably didn’t have the… mental capacity (?) to handle that with damon. but yea you’re probably right, same difference. i was just thrown off by the statement “stringing him along”.
oh how I love fridays
And there we have it, John Gilbert officially adds his name to the short list of fictional characters who were so absolutely unpalatable they had to actually DIE to be redeemed 😅
Well done, though, fair play to him! 🙏👍
Most of us who couldn't stand him at all before, are now like, yeah, okay, you did a good thing in the end, John, I'll give you that 🤷❤
I love Elijah!!!!
I’ve been SO worried about Bryce all season 🥺 RIP aunt jenna and also please remember klaus killed her because people seem to like him and forget all about that 🙃
Just noticed robs shirt 🤦🏻♀️
I didn't like John, but his death still made me sob
Poor Bryce
This episode solidified John and Jenna as my top two favorite characters.
Rip Jenna 😢
I'm not gonna say much but this episode is so important to the rest of the relationships in the show. Especially what happens after Damon gets bitten.
Jenna's death was the absolute worst! Loved that character. It sucked that Alaric was left behind...that wasn't fair to him at all.
This episode does feel like a finale. Kind of like Buffy, The Vampire Slayer 4x21.
I actually thought Bryce would be more upset with Jenna dying. If I didn't loathe posting spoilers I was going to recommend awhile ago you had tissues handy for this episode.
