    Edmund's philosophy of playing being more important than sales, is actually better for his sales. I played the shit out of Binding of Isaac before buying it, but I wanted to buy it after I played it!

      It's more the structure of larger companies then sales per say. When you have 100 people working on 1 project, ti can be hard to express individuality, or develop better ideas with crunch times and publishers.

    • @drewmcintosh9967
      @drewmcintosh9967 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Watapax What have you started with? In all honesty, if you're just starting, I'd recommend something like GameMaker. You'll learn the basic techniques of coding, with the possibility of making something awesome without having to spend years learning how to hand-code things like shaders, etc. This is all prefaced, of course, with the assumption that you haven't started with a basic engine creator to begin with. Have fun coding! It's awesome!

    • @TorstenPower
      @TorstenPower 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** do you actually use code in GameMaker? I thought it was just one of those bullshit no code things like games factory.

    • @drewmcintosh9967
      @drewmcintosh9967 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Torsten Power Disagree all you like, rebuilding things from scratch that have already been done is counterproductive from the amateur game designers perspective. If you're keen to learn how to generate engines, which may take months or even years from scratch (look at valve's engines for an example) then definitely learn to code. If you want to get started making games, a popular platform is the way to go, whether it be GM, Unity or something like Clickfusion. Anything else is usually coder elitism (not that I would dare accuse you of such a thing). Many popular and well-selling games have been built using these tools and to discount them is to hamstring yourself in a way that usually ends up being useless in the long run.

    • @TorstenPower
      @TorstenPower 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't actually disagreeing with you. I was just asking if you use code in gamemaker as you said 'You'll learn the basic techniques of coding' whereas I thought gamemaker didn't include any coding. The reason programming something (not necessarily entirely from scratch) is good, is because you usually have way more freedom in what you can do. You don't have to program an entire games engine but you can use a pre-built one like adobe flash or unity.

    As an illustrator, Edmund has managed to do something that most artists (like myself) fail to achieve...hes created his own style. I guessed he designed the characters in Alien Hominid just from how they looked....that's a really important quality to have as an illustrator

    • @foodbag312
      @foodbag312 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Alien Hominid's art was not done by Edmund, it was done by Dan Paladin, another well known Newgrounds contributor.

    • @PixelPerfect28

      80sKid his style is essentially Flash. not to take anything away from him, he's an awesome artist and one of my personal heroes, but his art style is basically his take on the glory days of flash games, so you'll find a few games (like alien hominid which started as a flash game) that look similar to his

    • @PixelPerfect28
      @PixelPerfect28 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. That's like saying my style is essentially Photoshop...its just a software with no aesthetic. His character are always short, stubby and have big glistening black eyes, that's how you know

    Watching this I found really inspiring. Its great to see the faces behind the games we love so much, makes you realise how much goes into a game when they talk about the additional work load AFTER the launch, setting up severs and bug fixes, all for people who ain't giving extra money for this service. If I ever get an opportunity to be recognised as a fellow game dev these guys would be on my list of people to mention for my motivation.

    Very interesting, insightful interview. I heard a podcast with Edmund before where he touched some similar things, but I think this interview really answered lots of questions I had about his games. Also, the story of Binding of Isaac's development sounds really funny to my ears, too - I really, really loved that game. I put 43h into it, finished it with every character in the game, and it certainly became one of my favorite games of last year.

    Idk why, but somehow all of this can be somewhat applied to writing. Not the part about how hard a game is and progression, but like themes and development. Like don't think you're gonna be the biggest thing with the first story or book, you gotta fail, learn, and fix what mistakes you made. That part is what I connect with and love about video games and writing. They both use elements from one another. Edmund is truly an inspiration.

    I think it's between Edmund and Notch for coolest indie dev. I think Edmund has a lot of passion and really puts a piece of himself into each game he creates. He explores human emotion in a way I think a lot of people are afraid to. But Notch kinda is the opposite, in a good way. He made a game, which people love, but in the end, he only made it because he liked it, and wanted to. For himself. He just sees it as a bonus that others love it. I wish more devs were like these guys.

    How the HELL does something like this only have 6000 views? But if someone puts puppy or kitten as keyword they get 9000000 views?? This video deserves more attention!

    He owns the company. He calls the shots.
    Although linking accounts like that is a lot more difficult than it sounds.

    That's how it should be. When i go to an art festival, almost all of the works around me are independent. When I go to a gaming convention almost all the works around me should be independent.

    Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.

    I absolutely agree with his comments about how bundles and Steam pricing are ruining the price perception of games. A great game like Super Meat Boy should easily be in the $15 to $20 range. Selling games on Steam for $5 to $10 is creating a false sense of worth such that people now expect an indie game to be $9.99 and a AAA game to be $59.99.
    Indie game developers are undervaluing our own work and it will come back to bite us.
