"governing like Republicans rather than governing like Kentuckyians" THAT is the hard truth right there, not just in KY but all over the country. Lawmakers have long since stopped representing their district in favor of towing the party line on both sides of the aisle. Live in Alaska. Am from Kentucky. I love the rank choice voting. Don't let anyone tell you differently. I could vote for who I wanted. I could vote for who I wanted if my first choice didn't win. I never felt like my one vote was wasted if I wanted to support someone who wasn't a frontrunner yet someone I liked and wanted to support. I voted for both Dems and Republicans based off of them and less about party. If I flat out didn't like someone they didn't receive ant support from me.
the only people who are going to tell you, the voter, that ranked choice voting is bad are those people who won't find a way to manipulate it or hide behind the letter next to their name because they will get national support in a local race just to have them vote party lines in Washington.

    • @danielleS257

@@kajerlou so should we not bother trying unless we can guarantee a 100% desired result? It left Alaska still mostly Republican b/c the population identifies as mostly Republican however they showed an ability to look at an overall candidate on some level.
Sadly, in general people are factually uninformed, take the perceived easiest route so they simply vote by party rather than take the time to learn about issues or they stay w/ the party they were “born” into or whomever feeds into their immediate fears. And yes, $ is still going to flow in the direction that favors a candidate who mimics the party’s views but at least maybe candidates would have make their views more known so the voter knows who to pick if you take the R or D from the ballot. It’s a baby step but at least it’s not paralyzed or moving backwards.

Thank you for the excellent piece on my home state. One thing I wish you'd mentioned is our governor, Andy Beshear, who is a Democrat and is doing his best to oppose these trash bills Frankfort is passing. Unfortunately, all the Republicans need is a simple majority (they currently have a supermajority) to override his vetos. During the pandemic, his handling of Kentucky's response became a model for a lot of other states, and Republicans are trying to take him out of Frankfort for it. Our gubernatorial election is also this year, and I worry about the Republican candidates campaigning to replace Beshear (who is running for a second term). One has done nothing but file lawsuits against everything Beshear has done (our AG, Daniel Cameron, who is a McConnell toadie), and the other has vowed to dismantle the KY Dept of Education -- as if Kentucky doesn't already rank in the bottom 10% in the nation on that front.

This is why we need to get rid of “fill in the blank” laws. Lawmakers aren’t writing these laws, conservative PACs and think tanks are. That’s why you’re seeing the same laws pop up in different states. Just insert name of politician and state, to take away rights from your constituents in the name of Freedom.

I know this was kind of a comedic type thing, but it's the truth. I live in Louisville, born and raised here, and this is not the same city I grew up in. They're just taking away rights left and right without any vote from the public. There was actually an anti-abortion bill that failed miserably when it was able to be voted on but our state legislators made another one that was even worse and it went through. No place is safe in Louisville anymore. I personally don't know any person that agrees with these tyrants in Frankfort. I would love to move out of this state but my family is here and so is the job I love. How these people get voted in is beyond me because, like I said, I don't know anyone who agrees with what's going on here.

I appreciate this so much. Living in South Dakota we are painted with such a broad brush but we have had so many pro-trans rallies for those who are suffering the most. Those aren't covered. Just the fact that we are "hateful." It's hard. No Democratic representation ever comes around to this area (upper plains) on the national level and yet they wonder why they continously lose. We can only do so much with limited funds. The last time a president or presidential candidate even visited this area was 2008. The main issue out here is that most people feel forgotten. I don't blame them. They aren't the racist bigots that people think they are. Most honestly don't even vote. They have the attitude of 'if they don't care why should I?' It may seem selfish to an outsider, but most of these people have had their places of work close and live in poverty. They don't follow politics. They don't know. It's hard to see and even harder to reach with such a limited budget. If Democrats even tried out here (again, in the upper plains), it could be vastly different. I know I went on a tangent (sorry!) but again I thank you for showing that many of us who are in red states or rural areas aren't the sycophants or psychos that we are made out to be.
