What a great review. Very straightforward and to the point. I will definitely be grabbing one of these. I have a non-working super Nintendo controller I saved for something exactly like this. I have a good feeling there is more to come from 8bitdo!!!! Thanks for posting!!
You only need the receiver for consoles that don't have bluetooth. Anything that has built-in bluetooth is good to go (computers, phones, Switch, etc). I can see how the price would be a bit steep if you wanted to use these on original consoles, though.
Would be nice if it were cheaper, but I suspect that's just the cost of recouping the manufacturing costs. PCBs are really cheap. New molds for plastic shells -- not so much. Suck it up, or just wait while the rest of us amortize the cost of that investment. (And hope it's still around when you're ready.) Personally, I'm OK with paying $25 if it's built reasonably well. I've got a stack of 2-for-$9 eBay cables that weren't worth the money.
The Bluetooth chip makes up the bulk of that cost (because Licensing). That, added with the cost of the shell, is what makes up the resulting price of the adapter. The plastic is inexpensive; the tooling to fabricate it, is not.
@@jcchaconjr Are you kidding? There are plenty sub-$10 devices out there that use bluetooth... So you can't say that "Licensing" makes up the bulk of the costs... I'd say what makes up the biggest part of it would be R&D, as is quite normal.
It's almost the same as the FC30 or SFC30 controllers from 8 Bitdo. But without a case, without buttons, without a D-Pad, without silicone pads, without screws. And the rechargeable battery has only 180mA. I'm sure the battery in the "original" 8Bitdo controllers has at least 450mA. I would buy this kit for 10 bucks. But not more.
Hot-damn! I just built a MiSTer and was keen to use some of the official wireless reproduction controllers I've seen, but was disappointed to find that the PAL version SNES controller is sold-out everywhere! This is exactly what I need! And since it also works with the controllers that come with the mini consoles, I'll have brand-new official shells that I can use!
Really wish that 8btido would make a genesis receiver. While the original IR controllers are great, it would be neat to eliminate the point of view requirements that all IR controllers have to deal with. Like honestly, they are gonna have a mod kit for a genesis controller, but not make a receiver for it?
Great informative video - much more use than the 8bitdo site! I was wondering about how the charging worked as their site does not explain this and this video has told me everything I need to know! 👍🏻
Thanks for the review, quicl and straight to the point. I have an old SNES controler (the one that came with my first console) that's perfect for that.
@Hue Jackson Still, imo keeping the board would be better incase you want to revert back to having it wired or to make a spare SNES controller that doesn't work and have it work with that board if you want it to stay wired.
Man I have an snes controller that has a broken pcb in it. This would be perfect! Idk how I never found these when I was after a snes controller for my wii. I wound up buying a snes classic controller and plugging it into my wii mote. It doesnt work on the wii with new super mario wii, but it does work with my switch if I use the 8bitdo adaptor.
Repurposing an old controller with the original tactile feel so that it plays for other machines, for 20 dollars, is really good. 8bitdo is quite considerate in this area. I don't care about the receiver though.
If you want to play on the original console (or clone that uses the original game ports), you really have no choice. If you want to use it with a Raspberry Pie (or other device with built-in Bluetooth adapter), this Mod kit is PERFECT!
I would love to see 8bitdo make that, but not many people use the dog bone so it probably won't make too much money, and me personally having the Gameboy type A and B button layout sucks and doesn't feel the best. However I enjoy the SNES type grip instead of corners on the original. Not to mention the SNES controller is decently similar to the bone, and with the NES receiver it would be close enough to a bone anyways.
Hi! I was wondering if you could explain to me how I should replace the battery light in my Gameboy color? It's my first time doing a mod and I dont want to mess anything up! I don't work a lot with circuit boards. Also your frontlight video was super helpful, made sure to get the LOCA :)
I have an original SNES30 8bitdo controller and its d-pad has the same issue as the switch pro controller (unintended presses) and the same solution (tape). Does this board fix that issue? I less likely to use it if the d-pad gets worse, but at least it can be fixed. To those who think the retro receivers are overpriced, they are the best products 8bitdo make in my opinion. You can pair many modern controllers to it and in addition to connecting to a SNES, NES, or classic (depending on the specific one) they can also connect to computers via USB. I have no regrets over the two receivers that I own.
Any thoughts on running multiple controllers at the same time? Do they interfere with each other if in close proximity of each other? This would be a cool thing for a console party but if we had a lot of these kind of controllers in the same room I could see some possible issues.
I would look into this but my original SNES controllers were played so much that the buttons these days just don’t work too well. I’ve got them around but never use them.
You can buy the silicone pads that go under the buttons very cheap, like shouldn't cost more than a few dollars! This is what has worn out over the years, replace them(which is incredibly easy to do) and it will feel like it did on day one.
I'm wondering what's happening to all those original PCBs and cables that get tossed aside. Are they getting thrown away for the most part? I'd gladly pay to have replacement parts like those from people who do this mod.
Just saw your video pop up in my notifications. I got my snes kit last night but unfortunately one of them keeps dropping connections every 5 minutes or so during gameplay. Hopefully this is the only one with issues..
i been trynn to place this crap into a snes 005 controller and the two up screws dont fit and i cant close the damn thing, wth!!! but the mod kit i bought isnt the same as urs even if i bought it as snes controller...
Actually, there aren't many good aftermarket Sega 6-button controllers on the market at all. Good condition originals cost about as much as current gen modern controllers and 8-Bit-Do haven't helped the situation with these kits.
I had no idea this even existed. It's a nice product idea, but I'm not sure if the idea of having an authentic controller housing would be worth mixing old, possibly malfunctioning components with a new board and hoping it all works, or if it would be worth having a proprietary cable. If it doesn't work out, that's all money that could have gone toward buying a pair of SN30 Pro's. I'd rather just do that.
BT delay isn't enough to care about, particularly if you're using an LCD TV anyway. Speed runners will sit 3 inches away from their CRT to eliminate the lag of photons traveling through space. Unless you plan on trying to beat SMB3 in 45 seconds, RF lag is on a timescale that doesn't apply to you.
I think it’ll depend on how the clone controller was made. If they took a mold of an original controller, then this kit will probably work. If they made them simply look like the originals from the outside, but designed their own molds, then probably not.
could you make a video about upscalers that introduce little or no lag? trying to be affordable... the framemeister costs 400$ for example, its too much for some poeple like me.
I really don't see the point in this. Why not just buy one of the 8bitdo controllers with a shell? This is pretty much a worse version of that because of the proprietary cable. You get nothing from the internals of the original controller like the original switches inside for the buttons. It's not even the original controller at that point. You pulled the skin off some farmer and shoved a giant alien cockroach inside. It's not that farmer anymore. I own a regular 8bitdo SNES controller and enjoy it but this is goofy.
Finally someone showed that charging port! Thank you! 👍
man you're almost 100k that's amazing, congrats!

$20 for the board, not bad. $25 for a receiver, not good.
My thoughts exactly. A little too steep to be worth it.

The original is 480mAH
It's a simple lithium, you can easily replace it
As somebody who owns an SFC30 I also noticed that it charges using MicroUSB, as opposed to this which uses a barrel plug.

I would have also preferred them make a board for the standard controller. 6 button ones were never as good.
I agree!
They do, now.
So nice.. Love the workaround for the charger port!
Hey colin it's going well. Thanks for asking
I read an article about this a few weeks ago. Such a cool idea! Thanks for the vid!
Thumbs up, thank you for the review of helping me make my decision on this product.
Each time I watch one of your review, I want to buy something... You’re devil Colin! 😁 Nearly 100 k! Congratulations man! You deserve it!
best mod ever just bought this love it so far my neext carry on item when traveling
It would be appealing if the adapter didn't cost more than the controller.
Save money by not buying the adapter and using a wired controller instead.
@@Exoamylase He didn't ask for a wired controller.
I snatched up two REALLY QUICK!! THANKS!
I wish they made the NES kit with a slightly longer charger port cable. That way it would fit into original famicom controllers.

That's awesome! I want one now!
wow ! how cool ! great content and explanation !
That's awesome! :D
I just hope people keep the original controller board. We need those for history.

pretty neat . lul barrel connectors are hardly proprietary but i feels you . they can be hard to find esp the smaller ones like this .
This is BRILLIANT!!
Great! So where is my Sega Saturn variant at?

Please request an NESMAX 8BitDo mod kit, much appreciated review.
Id like to see this mod kit foe the original xbox
These are awesome. How about for the NES dog bone controller.
I would love to see 8bitdo make that, but not many people use the dog bone so it probably won't make too much money, and me personally having the Gameboy type A and B button layout sucks and doesn't feel the best. Great problem solved.

I Made a video about the phantom presses as it was an important point that every reviewer skips on.. short answer is yes it fixes it :)

Multiple controllers in the same room shouldn't make a difference. It's not too different than using a bunch of wiimotes with the wii.
No receiver for the genesis 6 button controller and the shipping cost the same as the boards wtf! No thanks I’ll pass

Do you still need a controller board for snes?
I have the genesis controller mod. Words great with retropi
Is it possible to connect an Original NES modkit with an IPhone to play on RetroArch?
Just saw your video pop up in my notifications. I got my snes kit last night but unfortunately one of them keeps dropping connections every 5 minutes or so during gameplay. Hopefully this is the only one with issues..
Interesting but no for me, I avoid those very old systems since I prefer the supaboy or nes, snes classic systems.
Will this mod kit work on Retrobit Sega Genesis controllers too?
Praying for a TurboGrafx version

Krikzz makes a fantastic wireless Genesis/Mega Drive pad. It's pricey but quality. I do a full review on my channel if interested.
Cool 😎
this or the SN30 Pro+ ?????
Isn't that charging port same 2 mm stuff Nokia phones had back in the day?
Even if this plug is bit shorter, the original Nokia chargers may work, they will just stick out more.
Can you even call it a mod if you don't have to do any modification to the case?
I really want a genesis one but i can't for the life of me find a suitable 6button megadrive controller here in the netherlands
If you can find a Hyperkin GN6 controller there, I've read on forums that the shell is identical, and thus, the PCB will fit.
Krikzz makes a fantastic wireless Genesis/Mega Drive pad that I review on my channel if you're interested.
I'll check it out thx :)

Why 8 bit dough? Why not just 8 bit do?
A great mod but let Speed Runners decide if the little bluetooth delay matters!

Thanks I hope someone try this with that, if it works on the original then some clone controller should work since they had similar layout.

My Life in Gaming and RetroRGB have a ton of info on that topic.
Cool, but shipping alone costs as much as the kit itself. And that excludes the wireless recievers, which leads to a total of over $60.wtf
60 is how much a standard controller cost these days so this price is fine as far as i can see
There’s just no way you’re not Steve Nash.
Nice idea but dont own any of those systems anymore sigh.
What's in the kit?
A pair of scissors?
It's going good thanks :)

$45 USD to add extra lag on your retro systems? Ya, no thanks.
I agree
the most populair one would probably be the sega genesis version since there are no proper usb or bluetooth controllers for raspberry pi set-ups
