Reading through Pannenkoek's history, in one of his FAQ's, on why he wouldn't commentate again a video like Watching for Rolling Rocks is truly devastating. A wonderful SM64 genius went through such a mental suffering to get us the video we all love and adore. Pannenkoek, you're a legend. Thanks for everything you've done for the speedrun community.
why exactly was that? I hope it wasn't because of the fame or "infamy" of the video, he seems like a cool guy. I even remembered one of his other runs where he basically "trolled" the community by doing things just under the rules. He just wanted to have fun in the end.
For who wants to know: I’ll let you in on the secret backstory of the rolling rocks video. Back in January, I got into a fight with my parents, which left me in a really bad mood. Like a really bad mood. I wasn’t on speaking terms with my family, I didn’t feel like seeing my friends, and I didn’t feel like doing anything fun at all. So because I was so miserable, I wasn’t in the mood to have any fun with my time, so I figured it’d be best to just convert all my time to productivity, i.e. by making videos. So for 11 days straight, I devoted all my time and mental faculty to making that rolling rocks video. From waking up to going to bed, all I did was work on it. In the shower, while going to bed, while eating - I would just be thinking about what to do next and ways to improve what I had already done. I had no distractions because I wasn’t talking to anyone else or going anywhere - I could spend 24/7 in complete isolation in my room just working. That allowed me to conceptualize the whole video in my head and figure out exactly what to do to make the video coherent and informative - what would be explained when, what visuals to make, what jokes to make, how much detail to go into given the time constraints of the video, what the clearest way to present information was. It was a miserable existence for me, but there was nothing else I felt like doing because of my bad mood. Eventually I could have gotten rid of my bad mood, but I deliberately prevented it from subsiding because it was helping me get the video done. And so those are the circumstances that led to the creation of the rolling rocks video - a monument of my torturous ordeal. So now when someone says, “please make another video like this one!”, I just think, “please don’t make me go through that again...”

I know ive watched it multiple times its what brought me to watch speedrunning over and I find it again when ever I fall out of it. Throughout the video I wondered when the run would be. I truely think It has changed mine aswell, briefly speedrun a couple of games badly and has given me a weird motivation of pure efficiency in things.
@@bc1173 It absolutely changed my life in a couple major provable ways I could easily list, but won't because it's personal and you're a randomly antagonizing stranger lol
OMG I remember being so annoyed by him in that run. I honestly just feel bad for that guy after seeing one of his paper mario runs where his mom was yelling at him. Seems like a good dude that was just happy to be out and couldn't help himself.
I am a mod of the Incredibles series on speedrun.com and I created the game’s community on discord and there is a lot when it comes to the GZE story. I won’t go into everything but the TLDR is that originally, he did runs of the game and he uploaded his full runs but (as far as we knew at the time), he modified the game’s code to prevent the game from loading cutscenes which saved a little bit of time. After we found out about this, we confronted GZE. He was not happy to say the least. He harassed people in the discord (which he continued to do for well over a year) and he was insistent that his time was unbeatable and that he was the GOD at the game. In the end, he was banned both from our server and the leaderboards. He then removed all of his runs off of TH-cam. A couple of months later, he uploaded the 52:06 publicly but after two weeks, he privated it. Later, he uploaded that one 2 minute video where he claimed to have that time. There is a ton more behind the story which has continued all the way up until last month and I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back again. The experience has ruined the game for me (I never really liked it to begin with because it’s a bad game), for DwainiumB and for the wider speedrunning community. It was an absolute mess.
I'm sorry you had to deal with that... but why are we feeding a troll by making him a part of a list like this? I mean, there are so many positive stories that could be put in its place.
Banning him from both the server and leaderboards was a major wrong move. Just because someone is a jerk doesn't mean you get to invalidate their runs. They should've been in a "glitched" or "patched" category like many games use today for communities who have grown tired of dealing with RNG and want to display skill instead such as Bioshock 3 I think it is. Just a reminder that censoring people ever under any circumstance is unacceptable and the only people doing so are the ones with the God complex.
Just to clarify, he was not banned (from our server) because of what he did in his runs. In his newer runs, he seems to have used an unmodified version of the game. He was banned due to his abysmal behaviour. We never tried to censor what he did but we absolutely did not want to deal with him too much. His run was rejected due to him modifying the game.
When you quoted “will he capture it or let it slip” from lose yourself I noticed in the twitch comments someone said “his palms are sweaty. Please tell me this planned goose
For me Narcissa's AGDQ 2013 run of Ocarina of Time truly stands as the peak of speedruns of this decade. It may not be the best, but it did something even more important. It inspired many people to pick up speedrunning, much like Siglemic with SM64. It was the run that got me interested in the community as a whole, hell I think my first exposure to speedrunning was from one of her 18 minute runs of OOT when I was a wee lad. While she has fallen from grace in recent years, she still remains as of my all time favourite runners. Let's close out this eventful decade with one final "I SKIPPED 1:13 I AM A F*****G LEGEND"
I literally only got into watching, trying, and loving speed running because of Narcissa's (cosmo) run at AGDQ and the 18:10 record. Seriously, I swear it brought in a crazy huge influence to the scene. So many people got into the community because of those runs. It's incredible how impactful video games can be, and this just goes to show how amazing it is.
The quality of this video is incredible. Research, footage, editing, everything is done like at such a high quality level. No wonder why traditional tv is declining, it just can’t compete with that kind of awesome content. Its been great to live again the Siglemic-o-mania. As a far observer of the speedrunning planet, I totally agree with your choices, I did know most of them and hoped to see these on top. The stories behind were also greatly narrated. AMAZING work man, thanks for the upload.
Honestly your co op run at that AGDQ of all of Goldeneye is up there with the F Zero run. Just a really fun demonstration of a game everyone knows and loves, with insane positivity on your end
I remember that run. One of the first speedruns I had ever seen and instantly I became a fan of goose. His "oh baby" and "solid time, really solid" commentary throughout the run really demonstrated how much he cared about Goldeneye and how entertaining he could be to watch. It definitely is a top 15 for me, too.
I think the list is nailed....everything eccept for a single tiny little thing......i'd have at least mentioned hotarubi as an "unsung hero of speedrunning"...his "32 minutes" Super Metroid IGT single segment run is what gave us speedrunning's most famous meme, "to kill or not to kill the animals", and the fact that he beat it with a 31 using real time strategies truly is testament to his goldike skills.....that being said, watching this video, as if only 20 minutes passed, did make me cry.....Good job man....Good f**** job.
Man, JokerdTV's story might just be one of the most notable speedruns of all time. Sure, it meant being in the right place, in the right time even to participate, but it's still a rags-to-riches story that exemplifies the idea that anyone can jump into a speedrun category and claim glory with practice and innovation. It's the same with everything, really; so if you think you're good at something, give it a shot!
He also deleted the character, or at least attempted to as a character can't be deleted if it has mail. As he logged back in to clear his mailbox, he was flooded with letters from viewers.
As much as i respect the transition of Narcissa, i think we should state the fact that cosmo/narcissa are 2 totally different people, where both live very different lives, one of them held a record and grinded games, and one of them lives as the true person they chose and felt to be. both deserve recognition in the community, as a part of the history we are telling. great list Goose! respect !
kevin wall mental health or not, Narcissa and cosmo are two different people imo, going through that shit and holding onto life is pretty respectful if you’re going through that, just like depression. I didn’t mean respect as in a positive action, this change clearly made him go through some hardcore stuff And doing all that, being open about it and doing it? I really hope they find whatever road they’re looking for, because it isn’t an easy road.
Absolutely loved this video. Ill always remember hanging out of the streams of the speedrunning juggernauts of their age. People like Narcissa, Sig, Zoast, ZFG just to name a few... there have been so many kickass and wonderful people with diverse personalities all striving not only to better themselves but the world around them. Teaching us things about our favorite games and often reigniting interest in revisiting the old classics. Speedrunning is such an important part of gaming's history and I look forward how it will continue to evolve into the future.
That was a really interesting perspective on Streets 1:12 and helped me understand my own relationship with gaming and competition in general. Winning is a drug and you are chasing the high, when you get it it's impossibly good but for the other 99% of your life it's misery. Anyway another great video Goose. Merry Christmas all.
Truth. Comparing everything to the best you've ever had isn't healthy. Learn to enjoy the moment and appreciate life. This perspective might actually improve my life.
Dude, what a great video. Never in my life have I been so engaged to an hour and a half youtube video. Stellar job man, you deserve all the support this video gives you.
The TAS skip Narcissa talked about is entirely different from the skip that got eventually implemented in runs. The skip Narcissa talks about shoots down the ladder in the slingshot room and thus sets the flag to open the lowest door on the outside of ganons tower. To reach it, you need to reset your fall by getting hit by a rock. The one that eventually got implemented is a void warp, that changes Link's position after a warp
@Smattless Love when transphobes try to claim the moral high ground. It's 2020, do you think you could finally get over it and accept people for who they are?
@@WaaveLvl0 While I don't agree with the wording he used Cosmo/Narcissa was(is?) indeed mentally ill. It has nothing to do with the fact he is trans. Just do a quick youtube search, there are plenty videos that cover the story. When she appeared back after a long break as Narcissa there were plenty of alarming streams in which she read very dark poems, did incoherent stammering and appears to be very confused and unstable. I hope she is better now and wish her the very best. The time of Cosmos' Windwaker runs were my peak time of the amount I watched and followed speedrunning.
10: My favorite speedrun of the decade was a recent one in December of 2019. It's a Hollow Knight speedrun race between fireb0rn and vysuals. The video is called ''The Most Insane Hollow Knight Race of All Time'' and the title is far from a joke. They manage to finish within milliseconds of each other. The difference between them was only 0.05 seconds, truly Legendary!
Cosmo was such a legend. I know there are a lot of issues with stating that... bafflingly, and this really shouldn't be the case. Cosmo is one of the speedrunning greats and will be remembered as such.
imbazed22 Are you even talking about the same thing? Was there even a final time? There wasn't any sort of timer up during the game, and it wasn't continuous, it was only streamed about once a week. It was just about beating the game, not doing it quickly. Unless you are talking about the shorter blindfolded runs he has done at GDQ, those are speedruns. And honestly, beating his time would not be hard for someone who came up with setups while not blind, instead of only having their base knowledge of room layouts, especially if they played more than 3 hours a week.
Absolute mastery in representation of what a community is. Well done. I’m not very involved in the speed running community but I check in every now and then when incredible advancements are made, I’m always shocked at how much news is generated from such a relatively small community. I remember watching videos for half of these on this list and not knowing anything about the games but recognizing the milestones and the inspiration that they represent. An incredible example of the ability of humans to break barriers and you characterized it beautifully.
You genuinely captured Narcissa's impact in the most touching way. Thank you, Goose. You made it about how she persevered and inspired us all. A message some people needed to be reminded of...
@@Agape1992 he actually went into my account to leave shitty comments on random videos I uploaded like five years ago. I do not understand why transphobes are THAT upset.

Amazing video! I remember seeing 18:10 live it was truly an amazing moment in speedrunning history. I am glad I was there! And to finish it off with the quotes from Oot was bone chilling! Amazing video goose!!!!
I really enjoy all of your videos, but this one was just next level. Excellent viewing from start to finish. Narcissa at #1 had me tearing up. Her AGDQ 2013 (as well as the 18:10) was really special, and was what got me interested in speedrunning as a whole. May your 2020 kick off well!
I just watched this video and didn't even notest that it was 1:26 h long.. wow I was just so fascinated by all these emotions from all the years of watching streams and videos.. Thanks for the great video!
Just for me personally, my personal #1 speedrun of the decade is Narcissa Wright's Wind Waker any% speedrun at AGDQ 2013. That was the first speedrun I ever watched, and I was just amazed. Wind Waker was, and still is, my #1 favorite Zelda game, and seeing things like Zombie Hovers absolutely break the game was mind-blowing. I remember watching that video over and over, with friends online, and just by myself, wondering what more there could be in this thing called "speedrunning" that I didn't know about. What ensued was a passion that lasted me the rest of the decade, wherein I played Super Mario Sunshine, Super Monkey Ball 2, Celeste, Super Mario Galaxy and GCN Wind Waker to get my PBs down. It introduced me to the coolest internet community I could have ever dreamed of. I will always be thankful for Narcissa Wright's and her incredible passion that kindled a love that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Goose, this is your magnum opus. This is a work of art featuring all the comedy and catharsis we have come to love from your videos. Thank you for your work this decade, and we’ll see you in the next one.
Hey man, I literally never comment on youtube, but I just wanted you to know that I always enjoy your content, and have gotten into speedrunning content in general through your channel. Its cool to see your take on goldeneye stuff, I enjoy watching you as someone who is also from toronto and feels like we lack representation online, and I really think your content is something that will encourage many more people in the future to realize how exciting and dramatic these stories can be. You are a longtime speedrunner with a flair for telling the real stories behind the triumphs and the long processes speedrunners go through to achieve them. That said, and i noticed there is a bit of pushback in the comment section, I'd like to thank you for not deadnaming narcissa, even in the context of online screen names. I know that you could have made this video using her old screen name and using he/him pronouns, so I am very happy to see you avoided doing so. I know it can be hard for people in gaming in general to ally with trans people given the large push back from the more intolerant members of the community, so I want you to know i appreciate what you did do here.
This video just made me feel so much things. I went from laughing to dropping a couple of tears. This has to be the most wholesome video about speedrunning ever. Thank you for capturing all the emotions and excitement that speedrunning brings to the life of runners and viewers, most people oversee the work behind these runs, and others may see it as a waste of time. But once you get into it… it just hits you, everything looks different from the inside of the community. Thank you for this, really. And thanks to all runners that constantly surprise us with their determination and awesomness. Never stop doing it.
#10, any of the Halo 2 legendary world records. The game has a ton of little tricks, and runners need to be able to react to the different enemy routes in real-time,, which is always super impressive. The fact that the highest level runs all have deaths in them is a testament to the ridiculous difficulty of the game and the seemingly endless improvements still out there. It also doesn't hurt that Halo was one of my favorite series growing up and coming back after getting interested in speedrunning was one of the coolest things that came out of finding your channel.
Fantastic video Goose, thank you for creating content like this. As a 33 year old boomer, I have little to no time to keep up to date with speedrunning, however much I adore it. This content is invaluable to me, so please keep it up my man!
Hey Goose, I just want you to know you're one of the best speedrun content creators on this platform and I love and appreciate the work you put in your videos. Please never stop. 💕
I would Vote for Nescardinality's Dragon Warrior run full manipulation run as one of the runs of the decade. He had the no manip record of 5 hours 15 min then preceded to take off over 4 hours on the 1st full run. He then does it live in 27 min for AGDQ while telling everyone each input and how the whole manipulation systems works. It was a masterclass of how to do a run.
Couldn’t agree more. No way I’d be remotely interested without Narcissa, who made it all seem relevant and entertaining. Thanks for the vid, enjoyed your commitment too. Merry Christmas
Thank you Wright for introducing me to this part of gaming back in 2012. I was just a wee 14 year old, but it was honestly a life changing experience following them through the years. Thank you Cosmo.
I literally fell asleep right before Narcissa's 18:10 run since it was in the middle of the night in germany... and I was so pissed when I saw it the next day xD
From #1 moment of the decade to barely making the leaderboards of a BOTW DLC category, getting banned off twitch for hentai, and leaving the internet "forever". RIP cosmo.
Narcissa(then Cosmo)'s 18:10 was the video that got me into speedrunning. It actually hurt when s/he took the video down (thank goodness s/he put it back up), and hurt more when she stopped streaming and uploading.
I'll confess that I almost exclusively watch speedruns from the big gatherings (GDQ, ESA, etc.), but there's still a number that I would nominate for the no.10 spot. The *Tetris: the Grand Master* showcase from AGDQ2015 is how I got into watching speedruns in the first place. Not only was the game such a departure from what I imagined when I heard "speedrun," but the absolute skill so clearly on display because of how well-known Tetris is, and the commentary explaining how much the TGM series pushes its players, made it a sight to behold. It may not be the best pick for a speedrun, but it is a jaw-dropping experience. There are a number of blindfolded runs that absolutely deserve to be recognized, but I think the one that deserves distinction is that first blindfolded *Punch-Out* at AGDQ2014. It may not have been the best, and several other people have taken on the challenge, but it was a helluva thing to just _have done_ and live on camera, no less. The speedrunner halfcoordinated should get some recognition for something; I saw him play *Semblance* at AGDQ2019, and he did better with one hand than I could have with two. He's a marvel. The *Super Mario World* credits warp being adopted by human players is something I would include, as well. Figuring out how to execute arbitrary code in the game system's memory itself, while playing it, seems like such an insane idea.
SO happy you put that Metroid race in here! I saw that live and it was absolutely insane!! I had a comment pre-prepared in case you didn't include that! ;) Much love to ya, Goose! #StayTrue
Although it wasn't very speedy, I would definitely put hbomberguy's 2019 donkey Kong 64 charity stream in my viewer's choice spot. The pure generous and loving energy that permeated every minute of that stream is something I'll never forget
DwainiumB here, did not think I'd be in a WG again but here we are. Just wanna clear up the ending of my run, I wasn't referring to the speedrun being easy, I was referring to the sequence skip I did as it was recently discovered at the time and I managed to get it down pretty easily. (Thanks to MegaSpeed) Not sure if I'll run the game again in the foreseeable future but anything is possible right?
Hey Goose, I joined the speedrunning community as a viewer by random chance in early 2013 from Siglemic being on the front page. I remember watching Siglemic and CosmoWright make their undeniable marks on the speedrunning community, but I was also watching you on twitch. I never cared for GoldenEye, but you were the first speed runner that ever truly made me feel like I was part of a community, not just a viewer. Your journey to try and get a sub 1 hour n64 triathlon run is my #10
Glad HL21 got a spot. Segmented runs take as much skill as single runs some spent hours grinding out their segments. HL2 DWaHMoV In their commentary track they all give out hours they spent on the current run playing range from 5 hours to 100 hours over several weeks. Edit - Thanks for the heart goose Edit 2 - so editing the comment removes the heart cool system youtube.
The dedication and love for the community and this whole genre of gaming is incredible. I've never tried speedrunning, but always found the whole topic super interesting. Really cool video, thank you!
no way DwainiumB is in this video! guy is a legend for his mario kart wii tool assisted speedruns & online play using an actual kart, genuinely an extremely nice dude. never in a million years would i have expected to see his name in a video segment about The Incredibles speedruns LOL, just goes to show how interconnected online gaming communities in general can be
Murphagator’s run of Double Dragon Neon at SGDQ2013 was a masterpiece and deserves the #10 spot imo. One of the best creator commentary runs they’ve ever done
I remember the 18:10. Definitely one of, if not the best speedruns I've ever watched. As for stuff that I feel like could be in the honorable mentions, uh, the blindfolded Pokemon Blue race that happened at one of the gdqs is pretty legendary. Amazing commentary, crazy premise and the great sportsmanship by both runners. Werster's absolute dominance of the Pokemon speedrunning scene (for pretty much every game) for the majority of the decade is another one.
Defining 2012 as a year 0 is sort of funny, since we've lost a lot of history from the 2012-2014 era to long forgotten IRC chat logs and lost Twitch VODs. Discord is a bit more permanent than IRC was, so we're lucky for it. But we do have a lot of the before-2012 stuff due to the SDA forums. You can read the moment Door of Time skip was discovered on the SDA forums to this day. Another cool record is the SRL race history, which does give a really good glimpse into the 2012-2014 era. It's when I started following the scene and I definitely feel nostalgia for it. Large speedrunners getting 5k-10k viewers was very common. Looking at Twitch right now, ZFG only has 1,5k viewers. I remember him having 3-4k regularly back then. I wonder what's the reason? Way more small streamers? Small streamers are definitely more fun, you can see them grow, talk to them personally, and interact way better. Maybe rampant viewbotting at that time? I highly doubt it tbh.
I think the reasoning for 2012 being "Year 0" is more due to the fact that 2012 is when speedrunning moved from being an obscure niche into a legitimate hobby/career option. Siglemic played a major role in that transition.
maybe people got tired of watching zfg or others speedrun the same game for 7 years. Nothing wrong with it, sometimes it gets tiring to watch the same runs and the same games with very minor "new route" adjustments maybe twice a year.

Using those Ocarina of Time quotes is just genius.
Sheik is now officially the unofficial mascot of speedrunning memories.
You are absolutely right and I 110% agree with you.
@@JonSmith-hk1bq that spot went to the guy that beat him, my dude.
An hour and a half of top-notch commentary; that's inverse speed-running: doing something deeply impressive for longer than most people can imagine.

IT. JUST. KEEPS. HAPPENING.
I told you about the stairs bro (?
Honestly your co op run at that AGDQ of all of Goldeneye is up there with the F Zero run. Just a really fun demonstration of a game everyone knows and loves, with insane positivity on your end
I remember that run. One of the first speedruns I had ever seen and instantly I became a fan of goose. His "oh baby" and "solid time, really solid" commentary throughout the run really demonstrated how much he cared about Goldeneye and how entertaining he could be to watch. It definitely is a top 15 for me, too.
I agree aswell. I was so impressed when i saw it.
@@FunBox. Yes! I was interested in speedrunning prior to that, but I still remember Goose and his sweater really made me go down the rabbit hole.
Hearing Cosmo yelling "SIGLEMIC" made me nostalgia so hard, I miss that guy and it's a shame we'll never see him again :(
I think the list is nailed....everything eccept for a single tiny little thing......i'd have at least mentioned hotarubi as an "unsung hero of speedrunning"...his "32 minutes" Super Metroid IGT single segment run is what gave us speedrunning's most famous meme, "to kill or not to kill the animals", and the fact that he beat it with a 31 using real time strategies truly is testament to his goldike skills.....that being said, watching this video, as if only 20 minutes passed, did make me cry.....Good job man....Good f**** job.
That was in this decade? I think that run was made earlier.
You are 100% right. I am just really disapointed he turned out to be an asshole. Quite a shame.
I didn’t mean respect as in a positive action, this change clearly made him go through some hardcore stuff
And doing all that, being open about it and doing it? I really hope they find whatever road they’re looking for, because it isn’t an easy road.
32:26 "There is something wrong with you" = ban from AGDQ

The script must have been read over dozens of times at the number one entry to make sure no he/she crept in there. Great work!
Is Narcissa enby?
The TAS skip Narcissa talked about is entirely different from the skip that got eventually implemented in runs.
The skip Narcissa talks about shoots down the ladder in the slingshot room and thus sets the flag to open the lowest door on the outside of ganons tower. To reach it, you need to reset your fall by getting hit by a rock.
The one that eventually got implemented is a void warp, that changes Link's position after a warp

@@scotu7075 it was a speedrun, a blindfolded one, go try to beat his "playthrough"-time
imbazed22 Are you even talking about the same thing?

When the video was over I stood up and clapped my hands. Truly remarkable.

Narcissa(then Cosmo)'s 18:10 was the video that got me into speedrunning. It actually hurt when s/he took the video down (thank goodness s/he put it back up), and hurt more when she stopped streaming and uploading.
YEESSS I really had an urge for something epic
One of your best videos Goose. Cheers
SO happy you put that Metroid race in here! I saw that live and it was absolutely insane!! I had a comment pre-prepared in case you didn't include that! ;) Much love to ya, Goose! #StayTrue

Great video Goose!! Enjoyed it all!! I'm not crying you're crying!!
