This is incredibly helpful! I am about to go plein air painting for the first time tomorrow and the notes I took from this video make me feel much more confidant about not making a fool of myself. Thank you!
Suiperb explanation and demonstration. Its especially good timing as I've been in Italy for 3 months, and have a few Venetian scenes to paint myself, and landscapes as well. Even taking the photos, I felt some apprehension about starting to paint one, but this demo gives a reminder of how to start, and simplify, scenes that are so filled with details. Many thanks.
I really appreciate how clearly you explain the thought process. As a beginning painter, I did not realize how much analysis goes into deciding what to include, or even that there was a decision. I thought you just painted what you saw. Now I analyze the paintings that I see to figure out what choices they made and why it works. Thank you for these insights!
Even though I paint digitally your videos are so helpful. I like how you explain the concept and then show how to apply it in a real painting. This video in particular was great, and I also loved the techniques in "The 10 Painting Exercises That Will Help You The Most". You make landscape painting less intimidating, thank you for sharing!
This explanation can also be applied to explaining how to build a house. Vision, estimates and planning, balance, foundation, structure and completion. Very nicely explained, Chris!
You make oil painting so easy and fun! I love it! I get frustrated with the details in my flower paitings, so I will follow your advices from now on. The only thing is to find the right composition. Thank you so much for everything you're doing for us, also for free. Congrats.❤
I comment as a satisfied customer having purchased Chris' online landscape painting course last year. This video was great for me as I evaluated my latest painting while following along. It's a painting that I really do like and I can see now how it would be even better. THANKS!
This is so helpful!! Thanks Chris🙏 I live in Yorkshire UK and its often cloudy and overcast 😏 but I still want to go out and paint! Any tips how to find a good composition when its a cloudy gray day? ☁️☁️☁️
I like abstraction and very subtle contrast and super simplified composition - and you demonstrated that very clearly in some of the ways you showed values, dynamic balance etc - I really was attracted to some of your not finished paintings - so the last choice of details is very much a matter of the feeling 🙃🎵🤍🩶🎶
Thank you, Chris I have learned so much from your videos. You are so easy to understand. My question is about moving from beginner to intermediate. I feel like I have so much to learn but watching videos for beginners keeps me at that level. Do you have videos to help move beyond the very basics?
So would you think about portraits in the same light ? ‘No pun intended’ when you said we should know what’s more dominant. The light, halftones, or the darks.
How do you know which colors to pick to achieve a certain value? Because if I want to achieve a dark value to have a good contrast... the value contrast between a blue and a yellow is insanely wide apart. And the same can be said for all the other colors. They all seem to have different values.

He makes everything so clear and simple, he clearly knows what he's talking about and can explain it concisely. Great video!

Roughing out the entire painting loose is something very helpful I learned from your videos. Small details often also work simple and loose.

Wow! Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoy the course!
Fantastic! Holding onto this powerful lesson for reference. Question: Define/show “building up of surface” on a painting? Thanks!
Thank you for your useful comments 🌸
You're welcome 😊
Thank you! 😃
Excellent video! (One of many!!) Love the quadrant idea.
Very insightful. Practicing in grayscale (even with graphite, or charcoal) can help improve your composition immensely.
This is so helpful!! Thanks Chris🙏

It’s funny bc the more advanced I get the more I look to the fundamentals. Drawing, composition, value, edges, and color

Can you demonstrate a good notan sketch next to a poor notan sketch - visually?
Tnx!
Really helpful, thank you Chris. What program/equipment do you use to demonstrate with the digital pen? Thanks!
Photoshop
@@paintcoach thank you!
Do you paint with oils or acrylics? Do you prefer one over the other?
I paint with oils

I have a question. Were you a T.E. or wide receiver maybe a safety in football?
What software are you using to blur?
Photoshop
