He used what he called “tropes” and played lots of rule-based games… ie keeping a certain number of notes the same while changing others… often creating cycles. A sort proto set theory and freer serialism. There’s a lovely chapter on his music and harmonic language in Tom Johnson’s book “Other Harmonies”.
