    A little interesting fact about me: I got appendicitis when I was 10, and the doctor said I was lucky in two ways. One way was that it’s better to get it at an early age because it hurts a lot worse when you’re an adult and the other way I was lucky was that when I got to the hospital, I was literal minutes away from having my appendix explode on me. So they had to take me in pretty quick, and I was the most scared I was in my entire life. All the media I saw as a kid pretty much told me that if I went into surgery, I was guaranteed to die. So I start hyperventilating like nobody’s business and my dad is crying over seeing his son act like he was about to die. So my dad told me that if I remained calm throughout the entire procedure, he would get me literally anything I wanted. And you know what I asked for? A copy of Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, because I wanted that game so badly and my dad always told me I would never get that game because we never had the money. But everything went well, I stayed calm, I got my game, and the copy I have is still the one I got that day and it is still one of my favorite games ever.

      for me it's kidney stones - I might try to figure out if you can get scanned for it every few years just as a prophylaxis. Apparently it's one of the worst pains you can have. I heard several times that even women who've given birth generally say this is worse. The pain is not from the stone trying to pass through your ureter but from the urin not being able to drain so it applies pressure to the kidney. Drink your water kids - please excuse me while I get another glass.

One day I was feeling completely healthy and normal, and then the next day my whole lower left leg was suddenly swollen and red as a tomato, it was excruciatingly painful to walk, and I ended up in the hospital for a week. It really is amazing and terrifying just how quickly one's condition can leap from "everything's fine!" to "if we don't throw the full force of modern medicine at you right now, you might lose a limb or worse."

    I’ve had surgery twice in my life. The first time was an appendectomy. I have Crohn’s disease, and sometimes it’s so bad I have to go to the emergency room. On that occasion, I thought it was another Crohn’s flare up, so I was relieved when I was told it was just my appendix. The surgery was done laparoscopically, which means instead of a big incision, the surgery is done via several small holes, in my case, three. This is sometimes called "keyhole surgery". These holes were tiny, and healed quickly. A day later I was feeling fine. The second time I had surgery was when part of my small intestine was removed due to my having Crohn’s disease. There was a possibility that this surgery was also going to be done laparoscopically, and my earlier experience left me feeling that this wouldn't be very bad. Unfortunately, due to a few factors, that surgery was NOT done laparoscopically. It left a big incision. For about five days I was in a bad way. But then I felt better and was discharged. Then, after getting home, the incision tore open, and I had to go back to have another minor operation to close the hole. Special stitches had to be put in temporarily.

    This happened to me in 2016 and the trigger was intense pain that started just after eating a cheese sandwich. I only had to wait a little bit in the hospital before they scanned me to figure out what was going on. It turns out my appendix had perforated so they rushed me to surgery and my experience with the gas was the same as Arlo's plus I had keyhole surgery so I was only left with a few small cuts as well. For me the real pain wasn't in the waiting room but in the 24 hours after the surgery which was the most intense pain I've ever felt in my life. It was like 10/10 pain with the addition of the feeling of someone twisting a dagger in my gut which pushed it to 11.

    After that the pain went away and I spent almost a month in hospital with a couple of tubes in me as the septic fluid drained out into a bag but thankfully we could afford a private hospital so I had my own room. All this might sound dire and scary to those who haven't experienced it but Arlo and I are still alive to tell our stories today due to the ingenuity of modern medical science and the stubbornness of our survival instincts. If this ever happens to you just stay calm and go through the motions to get it sorted out. It won't be a fun time but at least your appendix probably won't be around to bother you again afterwards.

    Enough of my TC rambles, for reals, take all the time you need to rest! Surgery is such a big treatment even to your fuzzy cuddly species.
    I find it odd your editor didnt use the New Blood footage where they did a level on Appendicitis. Edit: Then again, I see the source of the footage is from GG so makes sense why.

    I’m glad you’re doing better. I also went through appendicitis, when I was 6. I don’t remember a ton but I remember being scared. I didn’t know what was happening, I was just sick at school, went home and then was in a lot of pain and then my mom brought me to a doctor and from the the ER. I really didn’t know what I had done on me until middle school, but at the time I was just scared. I have a few specific memories; the pancakes that were huge and I barely ate any of, the legos I could only build with one arm because the other had the medicine machine thing in it, having a little package from one of my neighbors who was a doctor at the same hospital sent to me (I still have the dog stuffed animal with the huge oversized head), being in a wheelchair and seeing some patriots players who I had no idea who they were (I was actually really intimidated by them) but my dad thought it was awesome. I remember the fish tank in the lobby, getting put on the gas and having the mask called “my buzz light y year mask,” picking out a movie from a collection of old DVDs and VHS tapes (I think it was one of the Mario bros 3 cartoons), and buying a stuffed clownfish that insisted was named “Fishy” and not “Nemo.” It’s funny the things you remember, and I think the thing you mentioned about the TV will stick with you for a long time. I couldn’t do much for a few weeks, and I was jealous of my cousins when they came over and could swim in my pool, but I got slime so that was cool. I also know that my parents both wanted to me with me but also had my 3 siblings to look after, and I later learned that one of my dads friend said “go be with Andrew, I’ll watch the other kids.” Despite the fact I’ve only met him once since then (he was a super awesome guy) for some reason I feel a special connection with him because he wasn’t involved in this at all but still decided to help me and my family.
    This kind of branched off into a rant unrelated to Arlos situation, sorry about that. But I hope you feel better soon! Appendicitis sucks but at least you can say things like “the hospital stole one of my organs! I want it back!” and “imagine having an appendix?”
    TL;DR; I recall random stuff about my 6 year old selfs appendicitis and I would give it 0/10, don’t recommend.

    I had to have my appendix removed about 6 months ago. It started almost exactly like a 24 your stomach bug. But after the vomiting stopped after a day, I felt a pain in my lower abdomen. At first I thought that I had pulled a muscle from throwing up so many times. But it just got worse within a couple days. By the time I went to the hospital, the pain was so debilitating I could barely walk, and my hands had turned a terrible gray-ish purple color from the feverishness it caused, and it was so cold. Luckily, after the surgery, the recovery went very well, and was only really nasty for the first day. Although, while I was in the hospital recovering, I ended up watching an The Office marathon, and it hurt so much to laugh but it was so enjoyable at the same time (the moment where Andy lands on his car keys doing a split almost did me in lol). I also discovered I have a very high pain tolerance. After I had gotten my wisdom teeth removed several months prior, I had discovered that using heavy pain killers gives me insomnia, so I ended up only taking Advil and Tylenol during the recovery and it wasn't too bad.

    I hope you recover swiftly, Arlo! I've heard that the appendix used to help us digest bones, but I have never bothered to fact-check that, lol. I have also had mine out, it was a pretty bad scene; almost exploded, I'm told. Lol I don't remember much of the experience, aside from passing out from pain on a Sunday night and waking up to find out that it was bloody *Wednesday*...

    • @pc2555
      @pc2555 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The appendix may also have played a role in digesting bones and other foods we used to consume. However I've been told an explanation from a natural health doctor (focused on nutrition and alternative care instead of medicine) that it contains and stores a large amount of the beneficial gut microbes so what it does is if we ingest a toxin that wipes out a lot of our gut bacteria the appendix releases the stored microbes to help repopulate the gut so it can recover faster and we don't lose the microbes that were killed during the toxic event. It then refills over time to do it again. Since all those bacteria were actually found in them that explanation makes sense though I don't think theres proof of it actually releasing it into the gut because that is hard to observe; with our current technology i don't even know how you'd be able to tell if it did that or not to a patient since its at the microscopic level.

    Hoping for a quick recovery Arlo! I feel for you, literally. I've been in and out of the ER a few times over the last couple years including surgery to remove my Gallbladder. Last time was two weeks ago for a kidney stone, which causes severe abdominal pain too. The local ER gave us an estimate of 8 hours to even get a room. A few hours in I finally gave in and left (which was terrifying) but ended up at a smaller clinic and got treated right away. I've heard things are still bad due to Covid, but it's just crazy. No one should have to suffer that long! I'm sorry you've had to go through that!
