Great video! We got our boys really keen to retrieve and now the next stage is steadiness. Really made us feel like we’ve done things the right way round thank you!

Great video, how do you go about fixing the 'drop' part? If the retrieving part is spot on (fast retrieve, dog comes straight back etc), but the dog does not want to drop the item in your hand to continue the retrieval activity - without the use of a bribe!

Amazing video, fun to watch. I was wondering with a gundog in training how would you teach it directions like when it's retrieving to go left and right?

Really interesting to hear "why" Harris has a delivery issue. Are you going to be showing other delivery problems? If possible, would love a video on dogs that don't want to give up the dummy!

The Mordor approach to training is so effective and very much chimes with my personal philosophy. We have a 30 month old Labrador retriever who has a good nose and loves retrieving - so much so that although he comes enthusiastically back and sits with dummy in mouth - is reluctant to release it. A video on how to overcome this reluctance would be much appreciated - not just by me I suspect. Thanks for all the videos, just wish we lived nearer and had come across your videos the day we got the dog as a puppy!

What a gorgeous pup. He really is almost _too_ well behaved.
From someone who has raised/trained a couple dogs but is by no means a pro trainer, he seems like he'd really benefit from just carry work. Just giving him something to hold onto while I do my other routine work with him, which he's obviously already basically mastered. I wonder if he just doesn't like the feel of picking things up very much and needs to get more used to it. Or just to know that it's ok to grab things he's told are ok to grab. That's absolutely where I'd start. I'm curious to see if my thoughts line up with Charlie's.

The drop is so consistent and the dog goes from very enthusiastic about the task to a complete focus on his trainer! Really fascinating. Maybe the act of returning the item and giving it up was negative for the dog and so he drops it before he has to give the item. If the trainer then retrieves the item for the dog and repeats the toss and send, this would reinforce the behavior because the dog learns he'll get to chase something down again. Looking forward to more videos unpicking this behavior.

This might be a tough one Charlie - he's forgotten the RETRIEVER part of being a Labrador Retriever! Looking forward to seeing the progress.

Great video Charlie, very educational, thank you. My puppy, now 7 months old, is very enthusiastic about retrieving. She has only done very basic puppy gundog training so far, but I have a friend (owns a working bred Viszla, but doesn't work the dog. An older Barbara Woodhouse type triaining minded lady)) who keeps telling me I "must" get my puppy to hold a dummy. I feel that's wrong as I don't want to overbear my puppy at this stage and suppress her natural retrieve instinct. Puppy is 3/4 Gordon Setter x 1/4 GWP (accidental litter) and is doing so well with everything she has learned so far. Are my thoughts on this correct ? Thank you.

Fantastic video - how would you approach a lab who runs in when other dogs go for a retrieve or will parade the retrieve in front of other dogs? Retrieves lovely 1-2-1 but is a nightmare when he is in a group of dogs

Harris is a beautiful dog and so calm. My older dog was never taught to retrieve, it’s so natural for him. From day one he brings back pretty much everything I throw. My young dog sort of does it, but is not as keen. It’s interesting to figure out what dummy’s make her more eager and how to get her to come to me directly. Hope to pick up some tips from your training of Harris 😊

Hi Charlie in no way is this advice, I would not be so rude to do so, but more of sharing my experience with the same problem, albeit the reason behind could be different, I used another dog to get the retrieve that the young dog dropped, it made the young dog very jealous and keen, I only use it a few time to get the retrieve then stopped as I didn't want to create other problems further down the road,
    Great video as always 👍

I have a Cockapoo I know everyone will laugh but she does have a good prey drive. Although I am not a hunter my problem is she will not hold the ball. She retrieves like a dream, will drop into my hand if it is ready but if not she throws it at me. I would like to get her to sit and hold the ball before releasing it. How do I solve this?
