  • Ah Death Note. For many, it was their first exposure to something beyond battle shonen in the mid-2000s. The creators are back making psychological thrillers, so does it match what these legends are known for? Come see my reaction!

Wait what? How is the premise even "cool"?..... It is about a depressed suicidal guy, gaining wings and other power ups to seek happiness, from that alone you might think "oh this anime is about the boy bringing salvation to people!" WRONG, all of a sudden they randomley throw him in this whole "god canidate" position, and even worse, BATTLE ROYALE?!?! Battle Royale is everywhere, in movies, games, and other anime, it's extremely stale, the whole plot is revolved being the last man standing, theres nothing else! So for some reason this guy who had lived through hell, gets forced to be in a battle royale... Everything is so inconsistent don't even get me started with how the villian has technology more advanced than the current era, ESPECIALLY the transformers suit?! The hell. Disagree. It doesn’t even have that going for itself. The art is fine but nothing incredible when compared to modern, or even older works. Rather the animation is the problem. There are so many times where you can see how cheaply made it is. Click and drag animations and cg work rather than actual animation.
Also I completely agree with the video of how the passivity and lack of interest to do anything from the main protagonist is why this show is such a pile of shit. Both Light and the two Bakuman mcs had such drive and passion to accomplish what they want to achieve. Now... is it me or is the overall setting/environment completely inconsistent on what it wants to be? On one hand, it's meant to be an urban dark fantasy, much like Death Note, but then it has these random sci-fi elements with the goofy ass Power Rangers suits, the uber- deadly viruses, and Kaneda's freaking house where he sleeps in a literal space pod. Did Ohba just not feel like picking one genre and sticking to it?

@@gguille12 Oh I've definitely seen that in games and other mediums, and I don't think it's a bad thing to consider at all. But the issue here, in my opinion, is that it's not blended or molded together as neatly as Final Fantasy. Like Kanade's entire house looking like a space ship while everything else outside that is just.... plain and modern. I get that he comes from a rich family, but that's a pretty over the top way of showing that, to me at least.

    • @RaccoonGrrrl
      @RaccoonGrrrl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I don't think this is the real problem of this anime. And it's "recent day" urban dark fantasy so you can expect the rich ass psychopath Kaneda using his wealth and influence parading himself as an "Iron man". This is actually the message of the story. Do you think the rich ass Tony Stark will be actually using their power to save people. No. They would just use it for their own's end. Watch the EP 14 it will change many things you are thinking right here.
And Oh I hate many aspects of this anime. But I like how they created and deconstruct Pedopoliman character. Not only for shock value like in the first 5 ep. But eventually come to social criticism as "Do you want to leave the fate of the world in the hand of a rich psychopath who pretend to be heroic?"

    • @DarkGuardian0
      @DarkGuardian0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@RaccoonGrrrl Just watched that today earlier. While I did think the message/criticism actually made for a pretty compelling idea, I do wish the story actually took the time to expand on it as well as his family's background in that field exactly like how Tony's was developed in the MCU. If the "UWU!! MY LIL SISTER WHO I LUSTED AFTER FELL OFF MY MOST STUPIDLY MADE TOWER EVER IN DUH FLOWER GARDEN!! NOW I CANNOT LIIIIIIIVE!!" part was erased in favor of that, it would've worked out much better for his rich man .vs. poor man mantra.

I believe that Tsugumi Ohba may have felt the pressure of success. He may thought: "They expect me to write something similar to Death Note. Something that will make them go wow. But I'm out of ideas." and so, we got Platinum End. Or even he may have written it, because he thought we would take him seriously as a writer. He didn't want to write for another teenager trying to kill criminals by using a notebook. Sometimes artists feel this strongly when their work is commercially successful. Many of them when they try something different from what people expected them to do, usually this new piece of art is characterized as a failure. That's what happened with Tsugumi Ohba.

When i read the manga i was expecting the protagonist to slowly realize how wicked his world was and resolve to challenge his inner demons with the help of Mukaido (and with that also developping his relation with Saki + MAYBE slide into a more realistic moral compass ???). I really thought that the direction the story was gonna take was how the protagonist would try to stop a bloodshed and realize how shallow his ideals were, and finally try to gain agency by working with Mukaido and Saki (With both confronting their traumas and suicidal tendencies by having a HUGE talk and the MC forgiving her to balance for the edginess of the show). I Also thought that the antagonist was gonna be more than an edgy teenager willing to destroy the poor for the sake of pseudo capitalist ideas, i was expecting him to be selfish and inconsistent, mainly dealing with the death of his sister by denial and slowly falling into madness. The main problem i have here is that the themes and how they are handled are SO bad ! I feel like the problem here is how ohba tried to convey were fist hammered and, unlike Death Note, the question of right and wrong was aborded frontally instead of just straight up let it go as subtext. The dialogues were superficial and the caracters and themes shallow, it's so sad because there was a way this manga and anime could have been pretty good, and it didn't even need *that* big of a change. The premice sure fooled me.

What if the Death Note writer made a deal with a certain sussy baka to gain the ability to write a great and successful manga story - kind of like how Death Note has Shinigami making supernatural deals and Platinum End has floating angels giving out powers. Now with his new writing abilities that he gained from this deal he uses his supernatural power and begins writing Death Note. However, the deal the writer made with the sussy baka is only temporary and also the deal had a price. The price of this deal was after the writing ability wears off then the writer is going to slowly find himself to be able to only write lackluster stories. He is now unfortunately half way through writing the Death Note story. Everything he has wrote thus far has been amazing, but now he no longer has the ability to magically come up with a great manga story. He begins to slowly falter with the Death Note story and begins writing things that don't really make sense, for example he suddenly and randomly kills off L. The writer panics and wants to end the story fast as to not drag it on. He introduces Near and Mello for some odd reason and somehow Near demolish Light's intelligence through the power of plot. The writer finally ends the Death Note story before he makes anymore mistakes.
Years later, he then he writes Platinum End but his supernatural writing ability is completely gone. Not even a single fading trace of his once glorious power remains. He is now cursed to make bad boring stories such as Platinum End.
But HEY! That's just a theory... a CRACKHEAD THEORY!!!

It states clearly in the manga that L only ever showed up to the toughest, most unsolveable cases. He was like an autist and what's worse is that in a professional sense? L literally frsternizes with Kira. In Light; L sees a potential equal or at least a challenge. God it feels like the bastard realizes how lonely he is halfway through. And I will forever hate how Near and Mello are like this wierd split soul reincarnation of L.
I ended up getting what I wantes out of desth note when I watched Code Geass. Lelouch is Light Yagame/death note done the right way basically and Lelouch actuallt succeeds where as light proves to be a 14 year old boy who was more talk then action and thus ended up shooting himself in the foot on multiple occasions. For this one... I say it comes down to who was around to write history when it was all over. Something in the manga not shown in the anine is the cult that misa amane starts that worships kira.
There is also the dialogue at the end between the detectives. Crime rate went down by 70% globally and world wars stopped altogether.... I legit hate kira for being so half assed in some ways but smart in others. Like outting himself by killing the death row inmate on tv.

I remember reading it on a whim, and I gave up halfway through cause it was so mind numbingly boring. I thought that was because it's manga format and I've always struggled with reading comics as a medium, but now that I've seen 15 eps of the anime I can say with 100% certainty it's just a terrible story. Also I remembered every single plot point, so I got the joy of already knowing what was gonna happen with absolutely no suspense.

Every opinion is respectful, but having read the manga, and having watched both Death Note and Bakuman, I still don't compare them. Just because it's closer to Deathnote, it doesn't mean we have to compare everything about it. Because if we do, I should say that Platinum End has some more relatable characters, frankly speaking.
I hope you will never have to experience this to understand truly what I mean, but there are people who struggle with depression and have come too close to take our own life. In this story, each one of the characters wished their own death for a different reason. They have a different personality, different mindset, different beliefs, different limits and different values.
Mirai (which's name literally means future) doesn't kill not just because "he has faith in humanity", even if as you pointed out is messed up. He doesn't kill for his personal belief he won't find happiness if he does such a thing. He is one of the few characters I have seen that stands so much to his values no matter where the situations lead him. And when he takes action he does it because he doesn't wanna die anymore. He wants to have a future of happiness the way his long gone parents taught him, and he wants the same for this world. So I feel the way you present him is not quite correct.
Also the theoretical part that apparently annoyed you in the manga or the part that cringed you on cancel culture are actually matters of discussion and relevant to many people's thoughts. Maybe it's a cultural matter. Some of the main themes of this story are based in deep roots of Japanese mentality.
Was it too edgy and grotesque at some moments? Definitely. Who can deny that? But as I have noticed from your references and the amazing poster behind your back, this shouldn't surprise you, it's Japan we are talking about. And some characters reasons' seem swallow but isn't that also a part of reality? Metropoliman is just a spoiled brat with imouto complex and power is what feeds his huge ego, so crushing human lives is a part of that. He doesn't care. As long as he has what he wants. Because that's how he grew up. I won't say all of this is pure perfection, but it's a manga-anime story. And if nothing else it does give a bit of everything. And insane people that are given power ARE edgy. History has proved that. If I told you an artist that failed his exams for Fine Arts ended up causing a world war and cause genocide because he was given the power and supporters to do so...wouldn't that sound like an edgy isekai? And yet it literally happened...
And in the end...yes, it is nihilistic. Yes the end was...something. Something that we should expect by having a God the one character that what he wanted the most was to die. And he saw that even if his friends (?) may ran happy lives now, there is so much misery in this world his soul as a human child first of all couldn't bare and he knew it will never end. So it might not be our "perfect end". But it's not out of nowhere. It's just another perspective.
It's not the perfect anime. Not the perfect story. But downgrading it so lightly without actual arguments more than a personal perspective and some commenting, isn't a perfect review of it either. And saying it's not terrible in the video while titling it as "trash"... well... let's say it doesn't look great either.
My personal opinion is that the art is amazing, no doubt, the story is interesting and each character very different, the ending very nihilistic, and to me it gives very mixed feelings. But trash? No. Nothing that has this level of art and makes you sit down and think or gives you feelings should be called trash. It didn't do this for you. That's alright. But it does for other people.
I am sorry for the length of my comment, but I doubt it will be read anyway. If anyone does, have a happy holidays and thanks for your time.

I treated it as its own thing rather than "by the author of death note" thing. Yea it is a pretty shallow proposition, but still quite entertaining and funny. The pilot was pretty amazing but as you mentioned, it does explore so much of the japanese culture. Clearly this wasn't meant to be an extremely serious story and much more light hearted material (although it does have its deep moments). Death note maybe was a bit more neutral in that department, but Platinium End feels and breathes of japanese culture.
I think the one thing I didn't quite like was that some of the characters didn't feel very "human", but well not that bad. I think people always seem to strive for perfection but clearly imperfect things don't mean "shit".
I also watched Death Parade and watched Platinium End after it. Death Parade did delve more into the artistic side of things while Platinium End is more about a faster paced anime. I enjoyed both really. Can't wait for the next 12 episodes of Platinium End, and see how they translate the remaining bits of the manga into anime. Starting to think people are hating on this just because it isn't death note.

tbh I feel like platinum end is supposed to be a shitfest. As we know, the main character is suicidal and doesn't care about anything around him, and in a sense the characters are designed to make us feel the same way. Having an overly edgy villain that, in an oversaturated market of overly edgy villains, is just annoying is similar to the view of how someone who genuinely doesn't care about the world would feel. Having characters that are never expanded on makes us feel similar to someone who doesn't care as we also do not care about them. Honestly this is just me trying to make sense out of how such a good author could write such a bad story, but it is what it is. What are your guys' thoughts?

And no story is 100% original. Sure, we shouldn't copy it that much that a reader/watcher can figure it out that this is copied from this anime or something.

@@donrog5035 It's anything but average and you call it slightly above?
Average means something that doesn't stand out but still does its job well because it follows a predetermined formula maybe with some minor twists to keep it interesting. Slightly-above-average, on the other hand, means following the predetermined formula with some major twists that are unusual for the genre; both of these definitions implicate that the anime/show is at least good and Platinum End is surely NOT even average.
While I may cut you some slack on the ending even though it was just an ingot of shit covered in fool's gold to make you think that you're smart for supporting it, there's a reason why Platinum End is considered absolute trash by anime content creators who know way more about what makes an anime objectively good (just look at Mother's Basement for example) than the medium Crunchyroll user who gave this show 4 stars out of 5.
TL;DR There's the "Sobaditsgood", there's "Average" which means decent and "Slightly above average" which means at least good. Platinum End is none of these.

Ok here is where my problem lies...in my honest opinion...I love the show alot. Obviously Platinum End will never live up to the legacy of Death Note because it is not intended to be Death Note's continuation. I think why people are hating this anime is because they had expectations that the anime would live up to the Death Note series and be similar. The thing is, every anime has it's own unique story and background. Platinum End is its own story in its own universe. Everyone expects this anime to be Death Note. It is not. Death Note for me will be better than Platinum End story wise but Platinum End also has it's own symbolism and story regarding morals and ethics.

I loved it. Bandmaid is fantastic always. I got a crazy JoJo style fight at the carnival. Loved Hajime and his arc. I thought the main protags were the perfect cute normal couple. I love how they open the flower shop together. I love professor yoneda and how he marks on so many important controversial topics. And thw ending while a bit literally deus ex machina was fascinating, bold, and unexpected. I was on the edge of my seat. It's possible there could have been more buildup, more setting the scene for things but honestly loved it the way it was. I was sad to find how there were so many shitty reviews on it. And yeah... Humanity would do effed up shit with red arrows. Duh. So idk why that scene hurts so much to imagine. Baseball diamond scene was awesome. Oh and by the way. Kira was in the right. He was egotistical however which is why he failed. L the detective was never really interested in justice. L only ever showed up to the most difficult unsolved cases. Kira was such a case. The entire kira case was just L's magnum opus. And near and mello are by far the worst characters in the story. The way they wrap that up was lame... To say the least.
My proof? Is Code Geass. To an extent Lelouch is the same person as Light Yagame. However Lelouch has the maturity and willpower to achieve his ends although he too has his cowardly moments. Lelouch succeeds in destroying the current world and crearing a new one whwre as kira fails half way through. If Kira literally had never killed the deathrow inmate on live television and spread out his killings sooner... Followed a logical path; he probably would've kept his control. It was ego that ended him; but the objective? The cause? Was to change a rotten world initially. I actually have more issues with Death Note then I did Platinum End. I was never disappointed with Platinum End; even if it was a bit slow at a moment or two.

No? He has always fought his own way. With the red to capture his opponents. Or he’ll fly in circles for an entire day to buy time. He’s always fighting.
“Mirai doesn’t kill because of some deep seeded moral compass, but because he doesn’t think his life is worth more than another’s”
We literally got a whole flashback learning from his parents how horrible killing is and he holds onto that as strongly as Batman. The topic of suicide, suicide prevention, existentialism, the power of social media, the hype of superheroes...these are just a few. I think less would be more in that case.
In case of characters, I would have wished that there would be more three-dimensional characters, all having complex reasons for being god. Maybe a little bit like Fate Zero, where everyone had a relatable reason for winning the holy grail. That would have increased the complexity of the show if you ask me.

If we would have seen him since the beginning in like some newspaper or in the telvision just for teasing him that woild have been so much better. To be honest I love every part of his Ideology and at the end when everyone gets killedand Yonedas glasses drop to the ground he said something like he now knows it. In my interpretation it is that he really knows it but they wont tell us because it will mostly likely not be true

I think its ok, I had an open mind coming into platinum end, I dislike the main character on the individual level otherwise it's good I would give it a 7

I really liked it , the second half of the show is way stronger imo as I almost dropped out with the extended metroman plot, and a couple of my friends stopped completely.

I'm only about 4 episodes in and I like it but I sort of agree. I was expecting this to be one of the best anime to come out this year but I've been unfortunately disappointed so far with the story being a little above average and all of the characters being boring.

all these comments are so well said, taking the words right out my mouth. the one thing that i haven't seen anyone mention is; why is Kanade white? i mean this half as a joke, but he's so jarringly different from the manga, i almost didn't recognize him.

It took a lot of similar elements from death note but they just weren't compelling and I didn't care about the rules because it wasn't as simple as life and death the way death note was. They thought they could make the arrow stuff interesting.

I think this show would have been more tolerable if Nanato was the protagonist, He was a more interesting character and actually had balls.

A lot of people call Platinum End Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba's failure but I honestly gotta blame Tsugumi Ohba here. Takeshi Obata did the best he could with what he had.
I think the art of the manga itself looks fantastic but it's hard to appreciate it when the story sucks so bad.
When Platinum End first released, I wanted to actually go out and buy the first volume just because of how cool it looked despite not liking the story at all. I was just hoping things would eventually get better as the series went on.

Personally, I like Platinum end. You don't like it.. I get it. I will say.. death note broke rules and shouldn't be as popular as it was. With this one, there was a different message. I think the bigger message was... suicide be bad, maybe we should do something about it. But the main character lived happily, that's something.

Yeah I know how are you feeling, the manga literally explained nothing and there were many unnecessary characters, many questions were left unanswered. It's just bad, and hey Tsugumi Ohba is also a human, he obviously makes mistakes sometimes, just this time the mistake was so huge! Takeshi Ohbata's artwork was so good though.
