- In this episode, I discuss a medication known as Vyvanse (Lisdexamfetamine) and go over three things that you should know before using it:
1. Potential for change in appetite
2. Potential for insomnia
3. Black Box Warning
My book is now available! It discusses my experience with Bipolar Disorder.

I've been on Vyvanse a couple times. In my experience (and this will vary person to person, obviously) Vyvanse is kind of an odd medication. Some days it seems to work really well and some days it seems to hardly work at all. I'm sure its due to a number of factors including other medications I take and how my body metabolizes the Vyvanse. Just thought I would mention this in case anyone else is going to start taking it and that they might experience the same.
Vitamin C depletes the medication effectiveness . A high protein diet with this medication is the best
@@Tinger_90 Oh I know, anything acidic from what I understand, so I tried to avoid it. I've tried with and without food but unfortunately I still had the same results.
I notice issues with effectiveness when I don’t get good sleep or smoke weed before bed. Feels like half of the dose is used to counter these two negative things I mentioned. When I get good sleep and don’t smoke it is great. I try not to take as much or any on weekends where I’m doing more leisure activities which I feel helps with becoming reliant on it. My psychiatrist says that it can be good for me to do that. Also of course the vitamin c and acidic drinks/foods have been said to diminish its effects within an hour of taking your dose.
For anyone else reading this I added my own comment on this video about my experience with it which has been overall really fantastic. Also smoking weed is really not good for ADD so I try not to do it.
Vyvanse uses your bioavailable enzymes in your liver to act effectively. The way you get these essential enzymes you must eat a high protein meal. If you took vyvanse and noticed some days it’s less effective, that is because you either had a low amount of those enzymes, or you didn’t sleep good, or a combination of both
@@shroomed999 yes I mentioned that
Best thing that ever happend in my life
I'm glad it worked well for you!
Same for me. Absolutely thrilled to use this med.
@@1daughter1son Still feel the same way?
@@1daughter1son Hello, Do you still feel the same way about this medication :) ?
Same
It’s pretty important to know about the crash you can get when the Vyvanse starts wearing off. In patients with depression the crash has a major effect on mood & is likely to exacerbate the depression at least until the crash has passed. This would be one of the first things I’d tell someone wanting to start Vyvanse. It’s an effective drug that helps many people & I respect that. I myself am on Vyvanse so note I’m speaking from my own experience but experiencing a crash from the drug is a common side effect.
I took Adderall and when it was hard to come by, I was switched to Vyvanse. When I came down from Adderall I would get angry. When I came down from Vyvanse I just got very sleepy. My doctor prescribed 40mg extended release Vyvanse and a 7.5 Adderall for when it wore off. That got me through to bed time.
This is true, I’ve been taking vyvanse for 3 years now and whenever I start to crash, I feel extremely irritable, moody, and sometimes emotional. That hasn’t ever gone away. It’s frustrating for myself and those around me
@derrick9605 so the crash makes you feel sad? For me, I just get tired. At first, I tried getting more sleep or going to bed earlier. That did not work. I think everyone expirences the crash. But the crash is different for many folks. I swear my crash off Adderall had me raging like the Incredible Hulk. That was not good for me personally.
Thank you for sharing this. It's greatly appreciated. I'm adjusting to this medication as we speak. There are many advantages but the "crash" really worried me today. I also made several small yet frivolous shopping mistakes which was not like me at all. Are there adjustments I can make to my diet, sleep/exercise routine and lifestyle that may help prevent or ease this crash?
Yes well I had that terrible crash from Dexamfetamine - it was extremely horrible!! So Im trying Vyvanse now only at 30mg which is doing nothing now for the first week then I’ll take 50mg I’m hoping for 70mg in the end or more, my body seems to dispense the medication very quickly and mildly, it could be because I also suffer form narcolepsy as well. But I wish drs would see patients as people rather than stats! What dosage
works for one is not for all!
I took Vyvanse for the first time yesterday. I had a fantastic study day and was extremely focused on everything. Didn't eat a single thing too. But it took me 4 and a half hours to fall asleep. I laid in bed from 11:30 and simply couldn't fall asleep
Because ur taking meth in a pill form my guy
I just took my first dose today. Now it's 3am and I'm on youtbe....hope it gets better
This shit is awesome bruh. Everything feels like the best thing ever.
😂
Oh. It definitely got better
I use Adderall and I learned that with Vyvanse I will be able to eat more and sleep better. These references are for people who don't take ADHD meds at all.
Vyvanse is a 100 million times better than methylphenidate at least for me personally. It's abuse proof, doesn't cause any addictive euphoric rush, and genuinely helps me survive day to day. It's kinda like what caffeine is for normal people, or kinda like it's depicted in movies.
I still have appetite, and have actually gained a bit of weight back after my malnutrition health disaster on methylphenidate.
But on some days it feels like it's not working at all. I feel like it's the lysine shell that's causing it, maybe it just doesn't metabolize on some days. For some reason on some days it feels like it's working waay too much, and on some days it feels like I've taken a sugar pill and fall asleep throughout the day with the same crazy brain fog and fatigue that I had before I was diagnosed.
I agree! It's so subtle I can't feel like I'm on anything except that I can focus better. Clonidine added to it helps any anxiety but I have anxiety off of any meds anyway. I wish I would have discovered both Vyvanse on Clonidine in my 30s instead of 50s. As for weightloss, it's a good thing when you're overweight anyway. Only a constant lowcarb diet keeps my weight down.
I’ve been up for four days straight. Turn this video on and listen to this guy for 30 seconds. out like a light.
🤣 you should be a comedian
@@theforbiddenfruit2300 be careful - that’s a long time to have not been asleep
did you start seeing shadow peoples?
I’m currently on Vyvanse and the main things I’ve noticed (good and bad) are:
Extreme loss in appetite (sometimes i cant stomach any food at all)
Upped concentration and focus (only sometimes though)
Anxiety? (I think this medication has made me a bit more anxious, which isn’t normal as usually I’m pretty confident)
I started 50mg vyvanse a couple days ago and have noticed some general anxiety too. Maybe this is a sign that it's the wrong dose, i don't think it's working as it should but maybe it takes time to get used to
@@joelwilliams3115 drink a lot of water it dehydrates you which can make you feel anxious , also I notice I get the best results when I take every other day
For what was it prescribed to you for?
@@joelwilliams3115 50mg as a starting dose is strong
@@joelwilliams3115I’ve been using vyvanse since I was 8 or 9. If the anxiety is very strong, you might be taking too high of a dose.
Just want to add in the overlooked aspect of taking Vyvanse. You need to stay hydrated, eat well even if you have to force it and sleep sufficiently, these three things help your body process the medicine efficiently, reduces the potency of the crash, and the recovery time from crash to normal is way quicker. Hope this helps!
I recommend taking frequent breaks from taking this medication, such as taking weekends off or vacations for example.
I am taking it the "other day" and not taking it on the weekends.
How come? I’m starting vyvanse this week and was wondering why
@@marmararraj76listen to your doctor's guidance. The medication works best when you take it every day as prescribed by your doctor. Staying hydrated, eating well and sleeping sufficiently goes a long way in helping your body process the medicine and reduces the potency of the crash.
just to help with tolerance, apparently. My dr has mentioned it also, that every so often it can benefit to have a day off it. Some people call it a vyvanse holiday
@@jesspostle7012 thank u. I’m one month into taking vyvanse and I’ve made it habit to take a break from it every once in a while because of ur post. Thanks again
Day two and this headache is about to end this for me.
The headache is dehydration you need to drink allot as vyvance dehydrates you rapidly hence the"dry mouth side effect"
I find that I become a little bit sensitive with textures when I take my vyvanse! I don't like eating meals aside from a big breakfast (before the medication) and diner. What helps is having multiple snacks that you can eat during the day! Having little crackers, apple sauce cups, fruits and smoothies allow me to "feed my medication" and small portions helps if the textures get too overwhelming.
I hope this tip is helpfull. It's not rocket science but sometimes it's hard to identify how this lack of appetite manifest. I was told that it was because I was too focused but really, it was just that lunches didn't do the trick anymore.
(English is not my first langage sorry for the mistakes)
Was on 50mg for months, now Im going back to 60mg, weight loss only happened after I stopped going to the gym as much. I have insomnia anyway.
Does it give you a feeling of butterflies in your stomach
@@happywings15 No just happiness
got Seroquel for insomnia with Vyvanse , its working great .
@@happywings15to me vyvanse does give me butterflies or euphoria kinda thing if high enough and positive thoughts aswell.
What difference have you felt between 50 and 60mg?
Does anyone know its effect on QT interval? I can't seem to find any documentation on vyvanse. Other stimulants are known to effect it. I ask because I'm on guanfacine (non-stimulant), but it makes me feel so tired.
This made wonders for me as i had a tendency for eating all day long and now only need a normal lunch. I also take it right before quitting for the job in the morning since morning fog during all AM was the main way my ADHD was affecting me at work. I take always the same 40mg which ended up being a sweet spot. i might take less if i feel less foggy or 50 if i had a bad sleep and need an extra boost, and if i happen to have a very good night of sleep and know the day will be quiet, I might skip it for a day, usually once a week. I also never take it on the weekend, and just assume i will likely be unproductive in the morning, so my body and brain can relax and reset.
Worked well
I was prescribed vyvanse 20mg after concerta 18 mg gave 0 results like at all . Scarred as shit to try it because I read so much stuff about heart problems and eventhou I don't have any still afraid
So weird. I’ve been on Vyvanse like 8 years (age 45 now) and it changed my life. I lost 10 pounds in the beginning but trust me, I found it.
What dose r u on? Which dose did u start on and how long have you been on your current dose? Just curious.

I was on Vyvanse for several years and it was terrible. I wouldn’t eat throughout the day and would binge eat at night. Not to mention the sleep disruption despite taking my dose at 6:30am. About 6 months ago I was shifted onto a faster acting dexamfetamine and it’s so much better. I take my first dose at 6:30am and it’s worn off by lunch time so I can eat and then take my afternoon dose. Plus if I don’t have a busy day I can break the tablet in half and just have a half dose. It’s so much better than Vyvanse
My experience is the opposite, hated dexamphtamined, loved vyvanse
It helps with bed but only during 10 hours.
Vyvanse has been a benefit to me throughout the years that I have taken the med - I was first prescribed at 13 and switched over to adderall at 16.
I found that vyvanse suited my needs far better than adderall as well as the side effects were less than I had experienced when taking adderall.
I took adderall for about a year and stopped because, at the time I had learned how to apply my focus through me experience using ADHD meds and I didn’t want to take it anymore.
That worked and I was successful although there has also been times that it has taken a lot more effort to get my desired end result; that being said, I stopped take ADHD meds for 7 years and I started vyvanse again just recently.
I have experienced loss in muscle tissue and heightened loss in appetite which I did not experience as a teenager. To curb these side effects I have increased my daily aerobic routine and have made an effort to eat at specific times in the day.
Stop taking it please it is literally meth my dude I was prescribed it and made me a drug addict it literally makes kids turn into drug addict it's not good for u long term either
It completely cuts my appetite during the day...I just have no hunger at all.
But then in the late evening my hunger hits me pretty hard and I tend to over eat at night.
Really wish the hunger suppression lasted 24/7.
@Patricksalt_ lame no life scammer.
That’s due to vyvanse only lasting around 12-14 hours, yes it stays in your system but the effectiveness of the meds only lasts for that 12-14 hours
I took .5mg of Xanax yesterday due to some anxiety issues and was not on vyvanse. I took my normal dosage of vyvanse today and not only did I not get a positive feeling but I felt lethargic and spacey even. Has anyone else experienced this? I also didn’t eat before I took the meds as I took them right when I woke up.
Hi Dave, I've started Vyvanse about 6 months ago after my therapist identified some severe ADHD symptoms (I'm 34). I do acknowledge that these people have different reactions, both positive and negative. However, I feel like Vyvanse had changed my life. The surprising part is that it hasn't helps my overall ADHD a whole lot. But it energizes me. I feel ready to take on the world. This has translated in both my professional and personal life very positively. I can honestly go from not wanting to get out of bed to having an ambitious day
Me, I alway sleepy
@@rubberslugs3454 I hear you on that one buddy. I still take Vyvanse to this day (over 50mg) seems to be around my daily. I still need to take a 1mg of lorazepam to be able to eat and get to sleep at night. Before I take my vyvanse everyday I have a huge protein infused breakfast not only because the amino acids bind to the ingredients in vyvanse to make it more effective but also that means I’m getting at least one, but hopefully two good meals in a day. (If you’re anything like me you will drop weight quickly if you don’t) the ones I’ve had trouble with are adderall and Xanax. For what they do they’re both just too intense for my system. I’m glad I’m finally getting a good read on what works for my particular system though. Cheers friend!
Both of these medications change dopamine levels the same doctor Rx’d a Benz and an ADHD med?
Lasts forever
Used Dexedrine for years till bout a month ago cause my Dr retired. I just quit it even though I had quite a bit left. Don’t know if I’ll even try to find someone else. Yes it worked for me but wasn’t a miracle. Used it as needed and never abused it.
Friend of mine uses V. It’s extremely expensive and basically the same as Dexedrine with a lysine molecule attached to it so your body has to break it down first.
Addiction isn't often forgetting to take your Vyvanse. That's my experience with any stimulant. I have to do whatever it takes to keep track of it so that I won't forget to take my meds. I'll get physical addiction problems with caffeine but never with ADHD meds.
That’s not the definition of physical dependence or addiction. Tolerance and needing to continually increase the dose and harsh symptoms if you go off is. Just a correction on the definition not trying to tell you anything about you or your relationship with the medication

Hello, I have been taking this capsule for two months now, the dose of 30 was no longer effective, I changed it to 60 mg, but now it has side effects, I am afraid that I will get addicted, what should I do?
Talk to your doctor. Explain you have side effects you don’t like and you fear an addiction might be possible. They can switch you off stimulant drugs entirely and try a non stimulant adhd med that isn’t addictive.
I truly wish I knew what I was getting myself into when taking these meds. I was under the wrong impression that vyvanse was nothing like adderall and was less addictive and all that… i didn’t even realize it was a god damn amphetamine drug until much later when I actually read the medication name “lisdexamphetamine”… my amphetamine addiction got out of hand after a few years even going as far as trying meth. I don’t do that anymore and I’m actively trying to fight the addiction… I wish I knew how terrible this drug was before taking it. It robbed me and completely ruined anything good in my life. I was under the wrong impression from my doctor that it was “less addictive” than adderall which is complete BULLSHIT
You either accept that you will be physically addicted to ease your ADHD symptoms or deal with them without medication. Both options have their own pros and cons obviously, but that's the decision you've got to make.

I’m about to quit taking it, the bad far surpasses the good.
Talk to your doctor about maybe using a low dose of anti depressant (5mg) in addition to vyvanse. For the first 2 years i took vyvanse, It helped me with my appetite and had a more calming effect to counter the increase in anxiety and sensory input increase. After 2 years i was able to stop the antidepressants because my body got a bit more resistant to vyvanse and the more negative side effects were not present anymore.
I would say that you definitely need to go down on your dose and mabe even change meds.i got this same effect from Vyvanse and am trying to get regulated also.
Did you feel like people were talking loud when you first started the medication? I just started it today. And it did feel like people were talking into a loud speaker straight into my soul.

My scalp is getting dry flaky, itchy and my head hurts
Warning: Sudden hearing loss is a serious and irreversible adverse effect of Vyvanse. I LOST my hearing after 2 doses. Luckily I caught early so some came back. I now wear hearing aids.
What thats frightening
this is a super rare side effect from taking amphetamines.
@NPP-o1u I advise you to do some research :) It’s an extremely rare side effect and it’s difficult to say if it is caused in correlation with other things or preexisting conditions. It’s not poison. Well, everything is poison in too big a dose.
@NPP-o1u perhaps you should see if an increased dose is in order? Or maybe you’d respond better to other adhd medications.
I was taking 70 mg of Vyvanse but i think is not working
I don’t have ADHD but I took this meds and it made feel like I was high on coke or something
I got the same reaction, felt like I was on blow even grinding my teeth , but get a lot done lol
Same as me. My psychiatrist prescribed it basically as an alternative to anti depressants. It definitely works as a mood improver but I get the crash like any stimulant offers. It makes me wanna take more to counteract it which I know is dangerous.
I'm worried about the long term effects on my brain given the fact I don't think I was formally diagnosed with ADHD and I have a history of dementia in my family.
Any advice please?
@@haigsare9974 it will settle in your system, after a while you won't really "feel" the medication, rather it will become your new normal. And at that point you will truly understand the benefits. Ride through the crash enough times and you'll actually come to appreciate the medicine even more. Search up ways to manage the crash better, practice self-compassion. Take care.
So basically same , but milder effects as snorting street amphetamines, where people don't have 0 appetite and loose weight to skeletons- terrible stuff. Wouldn't touch it ,even if doctors tell me, unless I have NO, 0 other choices and I still will try something else.

Just be careful, tolerance builds and you have to increase dosages if you're on it multiple times a week and when it stops working and you have no chemical help, ADHD/focus problems will get worse. All amphetamines can be neurotoxic in the long term and in high dosages, amphetamines downregulates your normal dopamime receptors, this can in the long term cause anhedonia, diminished drive, depression, tardive dyskinesia and certain psychotic disorders and in bad cases also brain damage, the effects of amphetamines on the brain is well studied. Just be careful, everything has pros and cons.
Severe effects like that are extremely rare in people who take them in therapeutic doses as prescribed. It's important to be aware of potential risks and side effects of any medication, but fear mongering is not helpful.
I haven't found any literature on tolerance. People adjust their doses from time to time, but the medication is just as sound as people who take insulin or blood pressure tablets for the rest of their life. Could you reference your research suggesting tolerance?
I've been at the same dosage for several years without feeling the need to increase. I did ask for a 10mg increase one month...but then asked to be lowered back down the month after. I don't feel like I've developed a tolerance yet in the several years I've taken it.

Adderall is pharma grade speed but Vyvanse takes 2 hours to metabolize in the liver so it doesn’t have any euphoria
Speed automatically goes to your system. Vyvanse does an extra step as it makes your body convert it into a form that could help you focus. This is why it's the only simulant (if I remember correctly) that the UK allows for ADHD. They know that it has a lesser potential for abuse for that reason.

I started vyvanse couple of days, 20 mg) ago and it makes me sleepy when it kicks in, and I taking the extended release one, which starts working in couple of hours. Before taking the meds in the morning, my eyesight is clear, but after taking the meds, it gets kind of blurry like when you smoke weed. The same was with concerta 18mg, which I took for a week before changing to vyvanse, but the blur was a bit more than vyvanse. I think Concerta gave me a little more motivation than Vyvanse, while Vyvanse is making me tired and sleepy.
Now, I don't know which meds should I take next because if I increase the dosage on V, it might help with a bit more motivation, but might make me tired and sleepy even more. Ok, I'm going to go take a nap and it's only 11:30am and I took the med at 9:30am. 🫤
I was sleepy on 30mg, when I increased to 50mg it went away and felt quite opposite. I also had blurry sight, now I'm on 70mg and the blurryness went away without me even noticing, Idk when that happend.
