My great grandfather William K Russell was born in South Carolina in 1894. When he was just a boy, he would bring a bushel of apples to the Columbia depot and they would let him toss a mail bag to the conductor on Old 97. Locomotive no 1102 of the Southern Railroad carried the mail train from Atlanta GA to Washington DC. It wrecked in 1903. He was so fascinated with this train that he would go on to work for the Southern Railroad all of his life in every position from section foreman to telegrapher including a time at the Spencer NC depot.

Nothing like the age of steam. Nothing beats the moaning and groaning of those living breathing iron beasts.

You might get a real kick out of reading the Difference Engine by Bruce Sterling and William Gibson, imagines an alternate timeline where steam remained the dominant power source

It's a mighty rough road, from Lynchburg to Danville, with a line on a three mile grade; it was on that grade that he lost his air-brakes, you should what a jump he made.

The locomotive in this film is a USRA 2-8-2 or Mikado type built during World War 1, There is a similar steamer ironically Southern 1401 a Ps4 Pacific in the Smithsonian that survives in Washington DC.

When serving with the Royal Air Force I was posted to southern Italy and served over the former Yugoslavia with my Squadron. Just before deployment to Gioia I remember singing this to my Girl at the time because of those final lyrics of this song: Sadly she and I were never to become anything more as relationships in the armed forces frequently come a cropper in these circs as I was to spend six months plus extension time out there. I bought myself out during 1997. POWERFUL memories - wow :o)

Well, they gave him his orders in Monroe, Virginian,
Said, "Steve, you're way behind time,
"This is not 38, this is Ol'97,
"Put her into Spencer on time."
Then he turned around and said to his black, greasy fireman,
"Shovel on a little more coal.
And when we reach that White Oak mountain,
    "Watch Ol'97 roll."
And then a telegran come from Washington station,
    This is what it read,
"Oh that brave engineer that run '97,
    "Is lyin' in Danville dead."
"Cause he was going down a grade making 90 miles an hour,
The whistle broke into a scream.
He was found in the wreck with his hand on the throttle,
    Scalded to death by steam."
    One more time!
Oh, now all you ladies better take a warning,
From this time on and learn.
Never speak harsh to your true-lovin' husband,
He may leave you and never return.
