    I think people confuse being overrated with the mark they left in history. You can dislike their music, even hate it and it's ok, what you can't deny is their place in history, they got to live in a very special time and place, they were the spearhead along with other great bands and artist of the period to a new generation of music willing to try new things, experiment, be themselves, they inspired so many great artist even today. So, regardless of their sound, their influence made such a good impact in music that can still be felt today.

    If anything, the Beatles are actually still underrated. They invented a lot of things that they don't really get credit for, like sampling (Tomorrow Never Knows), world music (Within You, Without You), and using feedback in a song (I Feel Fine). Note that none of these songs are even usually mentioned as among their greatest. They even invented the idea of a rock band where all the members are billed as a unit. Before the Beatles, groups were a leader and a backup group, like Bill Haley & the Comets or Buddy Holly & the Crickets. They were also the first boy band, where every teenage girl had a favorite member. The number of things they pioneered is staggering and that's before you get into the quality of their songwriting and musicianship. They made several of the greatest albums in history, while leaving the best songs off the albums and releasing them separately as singles. And in addition to having the greatest songwriting team in history (Lennon & McCartney), the third songwriter (George Harrison) wrote three of their top ten most popular songs as ranked on a recent SiriusXM Beatles Channel countdown (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, Here Comes the Sun). I could go on and on, but you get the idea. There are a lot of other great artists out there, like the Stones, Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Zeppelin, Bowie, etc., but no one comes near the Beatles in terms of their sheer talent and impact. And they did it all in less than a decade.

    • @toddpick8007
      @toddpick8007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      They literally didnt invent anything. Sampling was invented in 1971 not by the Beatles, they werent the first ones to use feedback they were just the first ones to use it on a commercially successful album but guys like Link wray and surf rock bands had been using it pretty extensively.
      There talent level is also pretty suspect, Paul wasnt a great bass player, Ringo wasnt a great drummer, and John wasnt great on guitar. The most musically talented instrumentally was George but not one of them would make a top 10 list of greatest at their respective position.

    As a 22 y/o Beatles fan, I kinda feel like people from my generation literally don't like the Bealtes and the oldies just because it "sounds" old and that they might be made fun of because they like it. And, vice versa, people above 40-50 don't like a lot of music today for the same reasons. Music is always evolving, and I think everyone should be able to enjoy any genre and any time in music without feeling like they're out of touch or weird.

Look, I get it. I was 15 once, too. I knew it all. Everything I liked was good and everything I didn't was bad, plain and simple. I got all caught up in the Beatles nostalgia as a kid in the late 80's as the first CD reissues were being released right into the 90's. I went the other direction a bit when the 1 comp was first out, I didn't think it represented The Beatles well, almost all John songs in the first half and almost all Paul songs in the second half. I never fully thought The Beatles were overrated but in the 2000's I thought they weren't the be all and end all. A year before the second CD reissues were out I read a bunch of articles about how most of the 80's CD reissues are weak and listen to proper mono mixes and vinyl rips instead. Stuff like hearing the mono mix of Paperback Writer was a big eye opener and I've been a full on fan again since.

    It's such a shame people find it difficult to appreciate older music. I used to feel exactly the same when hearing certain songs, it's hard to fit Beatles songs in a playlist let's just put it like that lol. But.. certain songs always stuck out e.g. here comes the sun, hey Jude, and then over time I discovered blackbird and while my guitar gently weeks, and then one day I was really depressed bordering on suicidal and then I heard "A day in the life" for the first time and it made me cry and practically changed my life if you allow me to be a bit melodramatic.

    Chord progressions up to the early 60s was like the box of 6 crayons you got at 5 years old. They turned that box of 6 crayons into the box of '64 crayons. They took pop/rock music down a path that practically everyone else followed. Only rivaled by Motown & The Beach Boys. Most people who dislike the Beatles love a band that was clearly influenced/inspired by the Beatles.
    The best way to get how great the Beatles were is to TH-cam the video about the #1 song of every month of the 1960s. It still sounds like 50s music for the most part until 1964. Changing time signature mid-song, using instruments not previously heard in pop songs, overlapping what key a song is played in, using drums to emphasize rather than just keep the beat(A Day In A Life), starting a song with the chorus instead of a verse(She Loves You), and so many other things we take for granted that they did first. They also never used the same formula for a song. Most well known musicians have some songs that sound alike. The Beatles didn't. That's what made them unique. The day before The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan for the first time, I could care less if I ever learned how to play an instrument. And then that Sunday night in February 1964 came ... we were eating dinner at the time. Well, I wasn't -- my eyes were homed in on the TV across the room.
    The next day, and every day thereafter, I bothered my parents for a guitar -- until Christmas of '64, when it arrived. So I blame The Beatles for getting me into this music biz.
    Furthermore, the release of a Beatles album meant playing that sucker with the speakers up against your head if necessary, so that you'd catch every nuance of the new batch of tunes. A lot of research was done in garages across the country as we tried to duplicate some of the sounds on the record -- sounds that we now know were not possible with the equipment on hand.
    Here's the big difference I would like to make, and I don't care who gets mad over it:
    As a group, The Beatles were unstoppable -- and the imitators couldn't hold a candle to them.
    As solo artists ...? Sure, they had their hits, but you could hear how much the other three were contributing to the group when they were no longer there, and it was glaringly obvious.
    Still is.

What almost all of those people do not know is that there is another phase of this band that comes after the “boy band” phase in which they displayed what goes down as the greatest songwriting streak in the history of modern music.

      I know what you mean, but i have to disagree with the end of your comment. I play many instruments fairly well and love their early stuff and can't stand their later stuff. We all like what we like and there are plenty of reasons for it. There are too many underrated bands when comparing to The Beatles, but it doesn't change that they too were underrated in ways.

    They aren't my favorite band of all time and they aren't the greatest live act of all time but they are the greatest band of all time and the most important.
    They basically were like the original boy band. They could have just written Please Please Me over and over and gotten caught up with their own popularity and fame and screaming girls but they decided to evolve as artists.
    The sheer amount of very high quality music they put out in less than a decade...really closer to 7 or 8 years... will never, ever come close to being topped. Nor will their importance and what they meant to society. Period. Paragraph.

  • @carlmarks8170
    @carlmarks8170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Anyone who thinks the Beatles are overrated needs to list their 5 favourite artists and then ask themselves how those will be viewed 50 years after their peak period. There are some legendary classic rock bands like Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Black Sabbath and AC/DC whose music has stood the test of time very nicely. I can't think of too many popular bands from the 80's and 90's whose music still sounds as good today as it did back then... U2, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Prince, R.E.M., Guns N Roses, Metallica, Faith No More, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Oasis, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Linking Park... I don't think any of their music holds up as well as the 60's & 70's legends.
    One thing is for certain... there has never been a band who had as much universal appeal as The Beatles - across all generations, old people, young people, male, female. I doubt we will see many kids in the 2050's or 2060's discovering & loving the songs made by Drake, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Adele, Taylor Swift or Billie Eilish. I suppose they're all pop stars.. Maybe some people years from now will still like Radiohead, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar...
    I think the problem today is that the "mainstream" (the charts, Grammys, etc) have become hijacked by the major corporations and used to push their own product. The true artists and the best bands get less mainstream exposure nowadays. There seems to be a wider chasm today between pop music in the Top 40 and everything else.

    No they are not over rated because their music influences other music.
    When Nirvana was recording never mind, Kurt Wanted a more grunge, less produced sound but the producer wanted him to double track his vocals to produce something more clean and unique. Kurt said no, his producer the. Explained “well John Lennon did the same thing” and then Kurt agreed and they recorded an album that changed the course of music.
    So it’s not just about the music itself, but what the music inspires, just how the blues inspired bands like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin
    I personally love the Beatles. Listen to “here, there and everywhere” and try to tell me that’s not a glorious song. Paul McCartney wrote that by John lennons pool while he waited for him to wake up.

    Thanks for this bill because I remember when I was 19 in 1990 and I said the most foolish statement of all time that being the Beatles are overrated. Until I began to realize how they changed the face of recording. How they changed just the idea that it was a band and not Johnny and the silver Beatles, how they changed the idea that an artist would write their own songs. These are just a few examples of how they changed the face of music forever. I was in a band 10 years ago and the lead guitarist said to me and the drummer who are both huge beetles fans and understand how impactful the Beatles were, he said I don't like the Beatles they're not a very good band. We asked why? He came out with the most absurd statement of all time. He said because they don't have a good lead guitarist. We both said George harrison? We then stated don't ever say that again just stop talking about the Beatles. Just stop

    Wiki: In 1961 and 1962, Neil Aspinall had become good friends with Pete Best and subsequently rented a room in the house where Best lived with his parents. During one of the extended business trips of Best's stepfather, the 19-year-old Aspinall became romantically involved with Best's mother, Mona Best, who was 17 years his senior. As a result, during this period, Aspinall fathered a child by Mona: Vincent "Roag" Best. Roag Best was born in late July 1962, and just three weeks later, on 16 August 1962, Best was dismissed from the Beatles.

The Beatles were changing the way rock and roll was written, and it's just that the current generations have always had music the way it is. They don't realize how the Beatles inspired my whole generation to play music (boomers). The Beatles even crossed over to country music and inspired that music as well. I heard Richard Starkey say in an interview that if the Beatles hadn't been in existence then it would have been someone else who changed music,so I agree with that. I expect someone to come along and get rock and roll started back again,I hope it's in my lifetime. Thanks friend

I try not to listen to the same thing all the time because I want to be able to enjoy all my music when I'm retired. With the Beatles, you don't want to listen to them every day.
