    You need an engine box.
An engine box is a a small box made from scrap wood really just an open square. Engines have enough odd shapes you can find a way to wedge it in the box so it stay still. Also keeps the engine itself off your bench.
Motorcycle mechanics have used these forever (I have a couple that are over 30 years old). Wouldn't think of working on a small engine on the bench without one.

I have been working on these motors for years on and off.The only consistant way to remove thermostat covers used in saltwater especially with the 9.5 Hp is to follow my advice.I made a huge boxwrench with a 11/2 24 inch piece of pipe.I took a halfinch steel 4by4 inch plate and cut it out to the shape of the therm cover tightly.Bolt the plate to the pipe after shaping the cutout and use like big boxwrench wiggle back and forth with plenty of heat.I dont break thermo covers anymore and they are obsolete parts now.I could provide picture if you would like to see it Glenn in N.Y.

Wow! That's pretty crazy. Thank you for your effort, patience and determination to make the video. I'll take my time with the removal. I saw some nonscoring chisels at Harbor Freight and figured they may be good gasket tools for working on the aluminum parts. But, watching you go through that, even though they say those nonscoring chisels can take an impact, not sure if they'll be strong enough. At a price of $12.99, may be worth a shot. Especially since the thermostat cover seems harder to find. Best Regards

first motor i tore down was qd-14.oxidized screws was a nightmare.in saying this a heat gun is the best tool for pulling out seals covers, splitting cases taking off most all parts.aluminium heat spreads quickly and cools quick.so heat that baby around base of the thermostat cover all around and take a rubber hammer and hit it in the corners as if you are unscrewing it .it will start to move.try to keep top away from the more direct heat or put ice cube in it.it wont take but a minute and if you do it right you probably save the gasket.alot of times even if it has sealent on it.best thing for using on all bolts and metal or brass seals even stainless in alum.try it out.you cant get small bolts out of and old head without heat.heat it screw it half a turn back and forth the more heat when you feel it tighten then screw some more.this is alot of reason why so many powerheads
bolts are broken off in case.torch works if you dont have a good hot gun.but seriously, their would be so many good useable parts out there if people would have and will do this.no-one want a powerhead with 4 studs broken off in it.

How about applying some heat from a paint removing heat gun ?

Brandon. I have 1973 9.5 with a broken bracket. The swivel hinge is broken and needs to be replaced. I’ve purchased the untied swivel hinge. Is there a trick to replacing this? Does the entire case have to come off??

Газовая горелка позволяет слелать расширение металла. После нудно остудить водой. Позволяет расшатать даже заржавевшие штока на тормозах автомобиля.

Anyone ever thought about using piano wire or a small form wire lumber saw to cut the gaskets through?
