  • The Amstrad CPC was an 8-bit computer that competed with the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum. It was considered the third computer. Despite a multitude of Speccy ports, the Amstrad CPC still managed to produce some of the best games ever made. This is the first of several videos celebrating hundreds of commercial games.

    Remember being amazed at the speech synthesis in robin hood. Excitedly showed it to my parents.
    "I can't tell what it says".
    Excitement crushed!

    • @ClassicReplay

      It said “Welcome Robin, good luck!” But you probably needed speakers back then, that amplified the sound, as opposed to the internal speaker. People talk about upgrades to their home computers, the first thing I always did was upgrade the sound.

    Criminally underrated machine. Definitely had the nicest looking graphics capabilities out of the big three 8-Bit microcomputers, although a blitter wouldn't have gone amiss.

      I think releasing the CPC 464 with 128k might have helped as well, then all scrolls could have used double buffering

    I think the obscure French adventure games from Infogrames, Ubi Soft, Loriciels etc... are the true treasures of the Amstrad, rather than the Ocean and Imagine shovelware.

    • @ClassicReplay
      @ClassicReplay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you give an example please? Most of the games I played from France didn’t feature an English language option so couldn’t play them properly.

    • @kur1su74
      @kur1su74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClassicReplay Very true; most of them never got proper translations, at least not on the Amstrad itself except for B.A.T. and The Vera Cruz Affair (and maybe some others... like The Inheritance) Some others got translations on other systems tho, like Passengers on the Wind on C64 and Amiga. There's a sequel to B.A.T. there too. These mid-80s French weird hybrid games always fascinated me ever since I played L'Affaire from Infogrames on my MSX2 back then. Would love to see a video of someone delving into stuff like A320, Blueberry, Fer & Flamme, Maitre Absolu, Mokowe etc...
      Also thanks for your content!

    • @kur1su74
      @kur1su74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClassicReplay That's seems to be a bit of a problem with a lot of these. As a kid I wrote a walkthrough for L'Affaire from Infogrames describing how to get like 85% into the game for an MSX magazine, it took another 30 years for someone to finally find the complete solution , which I celebrated with a complete recorded playthrough on TH-cam very recently :D These games are indeed super obtuse, which is partly why I'm fascinated with them I guess! They just don't follow the conventions set by American, British or even Japanese titles.

    • @ClassicReplay
      @ClassicReplay  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kur1su74 The French game artists were definitely superior to all the others. One day I will hopefully play some of these wonderful games if ever translated.
