I love musket battles in this game. You should consider downloading the modded unit pack called 200+ Napoleonic Units. I do custom musket and bayonet battles all the time.

They only lose because the stupid long reload time
This illustrates exactly why early firearms either require proper cover or need to fire in ranks:
The first 2 or 3 ranks fire, move to the back of the line to reload and then the next 2 or 3 ranks move up and follow with another volley
Or you know, just put a pointy thing on the end of your gun.

The Devs probably put long reload time because they want it to be historically accurate because muskets take a long time to reload
In real life it took double as much time to reload
