"The Day The World Went Away" is the second track on the Left disc of The Fragile. It was released as a single preceding the release of The Fragile and received the designation of Halo 13.
The song's lyrics are rumored to be about the death of Trent Reznor's maternal grandmother, Clara, which occurred before The Fragile was recorded. Analysis of the lyrics do support the theory of this song being about a reaction to death, but Reznor has not explicitly revealed his lyrical inspiration.
The "Buddha Debutante Choir", credited for background chants on this track, was actually a random group of bar patrons who were brought in from Igor's Buddha Belly across the street from Nothing Studios. - เพลง

I think i finally understand this song. Its shedding all the bullshit that holds you back, its at the point of your life when you've lost something great, but when you come out of it you become the person you were meant to be.
This song is more like a prelude to the whole album 'The Fragile'. If 'Downward Spiral' was about a falling man and was a regression from up to down, 'The Fragile' is about a fallen, who is already at the great below, but he can't kill himself and there he living a life of a wretched with a little, humble glimpse of hope, that some time everything will be alright. So in 'The Day the World Went Away' he starts his "adventure" at the bottom. For him world is dead and gone. He has already paid his price for trying to run from his problems in unappropriate ways like alcohol, drugs and brainfucking himself with a constant self-destroying reflection. Maybe some time he will rise, but looks like he don't believe that his chances are big. And all he can do is dreaming that someone will come here and save him ('Fragile', 'We're in This Together Now').
