In 2019 I decided to go on a Grand Canyon Dory trip with OARS. 2020 was already booked, but I made a reservation for April 2021. Lee’s Ferry to Pipe Creek, near Phantom Ranch. I was not prepared for how well we were guided and fed. I would not describe it as “hard core” at all. I wanted to go all the way to Pierce Ferry, but could not cajole anyone I knew to do the 14 days, and settled for 8 days with my adult son. 8 of the 16 guests left the river at Pipe Creek, and 8 new guests hiked in to take the second half of the trip. That turned out for the best, as I was getting pretty worn out. Some rode out on mules, but my 30-year old son and I hiked out with our gear, about 20 pounds or so. At age 67, I trained pretty hard for months, and made it to the trailhead in 7 hours.
It would be scary to see what happens when or if it goes empty in three, maybe four years. I guess it will be a good time to prepare life without water. Good show Russ.
I'be been watching your Chanel for about a year. I'm somewhat in the video/music production business. Please don't change your style/flow- ever. Your video clips are perfect. You layout/document your trips so well. The drone footage, when possible, is an added helpful bonus. I have a cousin in St. Louis that sounds just like you. Amazing.

Lake Mead will probably drop below 1,042 tomorrow. I remember flying over Lake Mead in the early '70's and it was at full pool. It was a magnificent site, real shame what's happening!
Back in 1996-1997 my family visited Overton, Nevada when Lake mead was higher and there was a marina at Overton. I remember walking around the marina there in Overton and seeing a lot of fish right up by the docks.
👍👍 so strange to see that dock on the ground. It's just living history though, at some point when it dries it will still be a tourist destination like the Salton Sea.

Wikipedia says the lake was 112 miles long and 532 at its deepest depth between the 70s and 1983. Max capacity was 28.23 acre feet of water. Then it’s been shrinking since and on June 1st water capacity was down to 7.517 million acre feet
The Pacific ocean is setting up to have a 3rd La Nina in a row . Never done that since records were kept . It will take 2 or 3 El Nino in a row to actually put any water in the pond . Be safe in your travels !
Yeah, this summer in Cal is going to be brutal. Our Spring was just hot and windy and dry. Seems like there’s no Winter anymore. Just Fall, Spring, Summer, and Bake.
I also live in Henderson... Retired water treatment plant operator.. Hard cold Fact here... Growth rate is contingent on available acre feet of water... It is a Federal Law ! but, Las Vegas and Henderson.. took bribe money from developers ( who don't live here ) and, over populated the Desert ... 75 percent of our potable water is used in construction... Compaction and dust control... Residents use around 20 percent... So, They tell the residents .. cut back but, they continue to build ! Stop Building !!!!!
Thank you for speaking the TRUTH. Is there drought? Absolutley, but the reality is the desert can not support tract developers building McMansions four feet apart at breakneck speed. It is sad and stupid.

Would be great to see pictures of this area pre- damming. Wonder how deep and wide the Colorado was way back then? The drop off at the old boat launch is unbelievable! That lake has been there for over 91 years. According to your theory it never would have filled. Ever. If your theory is correct, the Colorado River would never make the 1450 mile journey to the ocean either. 🤪

Honestly, Russ, I would enjoy it so much if you were to get your license! So many times when I watch your videos of your local water holes (what's left of some of them) I wonder what's in there and how good the fishing might be. Unfortunately, I haven't been out fishing for awhile but I truly enjoy it. I'm one of those people who will try a place, rain or shine, just to see if anything's biting. Lake Mead's water has dropped 1.5 feet in the past seventeen days. Every day it drops one-half to one inch. So sad and in less than 3 years no more electricity or outflow if things do not change radically. The mountains and desert and remaining lake are very pretty. Many thanks for the virtual adventure.

I’ve had a place in Meadview for about 11 years, the rule (or law) according to the Rangers has always been no camping. They pulled the Rangers many years ago so people just started camping as there was nobody to enforce it. Great pictures! I guess I need to spring for a good camera instead of a very old phone for pictures.
Would have been very interesting to see the area 100 years ago. History in the making. Having a 4×4 truck in the NE means you'll go further off road and get super stuck. My aunt was on an Alaska cruise years ago and lost her teeth. She's gone now so I can laugh at her loss. Lol. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋♂️

I first watched your channel last year when I watched your videos from up around the Ely/Great Basin National park area. Lately I've been watching your videos from along Route 66 and around Lake Mead. They have given me a lot of good ideas for trips I want to take this summer and fall.

Well, it seems the "Recreation is over" around Lake Mead. I had found a very nice campground at Echo Bay in Nevada during my 1998 trip. In 2019, nothing remained of it and the water level hasn't ceased falling down since ... Is it a long term tendency linked to Climate Change or simply a temporary situation ? Time will tell but for now, nice places to swim or cool down have disappeared. Las Vegas will begin to feel the effects of the drought soon (water and/or electricity rationing in the worst case scenario). I just heard on CBS News that the Great Salt Lake in Utah has shrunk a lot too. No trip South this year for me anyway, with all that's going on in the U.S. I feel lucky you can present these fabulous videos, you know Arizona and places to camp safely so well. Well it isn't climate change, as that area has been desert for millions of years. It's just simply people taking more water out of the lake than nature can put back in. Don't think you'll ever see a recovery of the lake until the population of the southwestern US decreases drastically.
The one and only time I was to Hoover Dam was back in 1995 on a trip with my good friend just before he got married. The water level was much higher and I remember seeing the large catfish next to the dam. They enjoyed the Necco's (candy) we were tossing in. So sad to see the water levels like this.

I visited South Cove last December right before New Years. I'm certain the dock was still sorta floating but for sure the water was considerably closer to the ramp area. Boats weren't allowed regardless. That little picnic area is indeed a fantastic spot. I got some great shots of that little inlet of water (which, once again, was considerably higher). I just kept thinking that where I was standing was once under water.
Heads up the water has already been shipped south. Check lake levels and lake Murray reservoir is flooding as they still are pumping too much water inter it. La Mesa in San Diego
It's all going back to normal. It was the little Colorado River a long time ago, and soon it will be a little Colorado Creek once again. It was all dammed up for a Hydro electric Hoover Dam and water for Los Vegas and other smaller cities, which was a big mistake. It's great to see it dry up, and to show that you can't beat Mother Nature.
Strange that they don't allow metal detection. Most hobbyists toss the trash found in a garbage can versus leaving it to injure someone or puncture a tire.
The reason why it is a National Park. And a Ranger told me your not even suppose to move the rocks because of Lake Meads status. I wanted to metal detect on the nevada side. I could however magnet fish off the docks.
It's not strange. If people don't fight for their rights then they deserve to have them taken away. The only thing consistent throughout history is governments appetite for power and control. It's our lake, our land, but we allowed them to dictate what we can and cannot do with it.
Sad to see the lake disappearing , I am from Kingman Arizona . I lived at Anteres point till I was four years old and then we moved into Kingman where my dads parents were. I miss the times of going to Pierce Ferry , South Cove and Temple Bar . I think it was 1984 ?? When Hoover damn had there spill ways dumping trillions of gallons down stream to Lake Mohave and there was flooding on the Colorado river between Davis dam and Needles .
You could literally stand at the edge of the lake and watch the water recede, it's going down that fast, just like a tide receding. I believe it's something like 8 inches a day it's receding by.

I do have to say, that to think a man made lake, with millions drawing from it, could survive in a dessert, is an absurd notion. The dessert is reclaiming its land.

The lake was fine until quite recently. I think it's being deliberately starved of water. The same in Oroville: overflowing in 2017, and the EPA emptied it to the sea. Now there's a 'water shortage'. It's deliberate. The dam was actually made to pass a LOT more water, IIRC only half the turbines are in use.
@@lynn9496 It was opened in 1936, and the decline was very gradual up to 2020. I can only explain this, by blocking up / diverting of the inlets. It's not like the Aral Sea (a puddle), it's a successful manmade confluence of water sources. The question is, what happened to the water sources?

Well it isn't climate change, as that area has been desert for millions of years. It's just simply people taking more water out of the lake than nature can put back in. Don't think you'll ever see a recovery of the lake until the population of the southwestern US decreases drastically.
Been watching a few videos from "Sin City Outdoors". Definitely a dire situation regarding Lake Mead, the turbines, the fishing, etc.
Not a good sign.
The one and only time I was to Hoover Dam was back in 1995 on a trip with my good friend just before he got married. The water level was much higher and I remember seeing the large catfish next to the dam. They enjoyed the Necco's (candy) we were tossing in. So sad to see the water levels like this.

If you watch sin city outdoors videos it does looks like 1/3 of a foot per day.
Definitely a sad loss of the lakes. Earth is always in change. Odd they don't allow boondocking there. Imagine others have ruined it for some. Still a pretty area. Enjoyed. 🙂👍

Lake Mead. - Where they keep moving the goal posts.
I visited South Cove last December right before New Years. I'm certain the dock was still sorta floating but for sure the water was considerably closer to the ramp area. Boats weren't allowed regardless.
That little picnic area is indeed a fantastic spot. I got some great shots of that little inlet of water (which, once again, was considerably higher). I just kept thinking that where I was standing was once under water.

This would beat the beach anyday!....Great place to just bring some lounge chairs,catch some rays,swim,maybe toss a line.No need for a boat.Beautiful!
Heads up the water has already been shipped south. Check lake levels and lake Murray reservoir is flooding as they still are pumping too much water inter it. La Mesa in San Diego

It's all going back to normal. It was the little Colorado River a long time ago, and soon it will be a little Colorado Creek once again. It was all dammed up for a Hydro electric Hoover Dam and water for Los Vegas and other smaller cities, which was a big mistake. It's great to see it dry up, and to show that you can't beat Mother Nature.
Strange that they don't allow metal detection. Most hobbyists toss the trash found in a garbage can versus leaving it to injure someone or puncture a tire.
The reason why it is a National Park. And a Ranger told me your not even suppose to move the rocks because of Lake Meads status. I wanted to metal detect on the nevada side. I could however magnet fish off the docks.

It's not strange. If people don't fight for their rights then they deserve to have them taken away. The only thing consistent throughout history is governments appetite for power and control. It's our lake, our land, but we allowed them to dictate what we can and cannot do with it.
The US government is a corporation, use your Constitutional rights: or lose them.
A corporations has not right to tell us what we can or cannot do.

Sad to see the lake disappearing , I am from Kingman Arizona . I lived at Anteres point till I was four years old and then we moved into Kingman where my dads parents were. I miss the times of going to Pierce Ferry , South Cove and Temple Bar . I think it was 1984 ?? When Hoover damn had there spill ways dumping trillions of gallons down stream to Lake Mohave and there was flooding on the Colorado river between Davis dam and Needles .

You could literally stand at the edge of the lake and watch the water recede, it's going down that fast, just like a tide receding. I believe it's something like 8 inches a day it's receding by.

I do have to say, that to think a man made lake, with millions drawing from it, could survive in a dessert, is an absurd notion. The dessert is reclaiming its land.

The lake was fine until quite recently. I think it's being deliberately starved of water. The same in Oroville: overflowing in 2017, and the EPA emptied it to the sea. Now there's a 'water shortage'. It's deliberate.
The dam was actually made to pass a LOT more water, IIRC only half the turbines are in use.

I can only explain this, by blocking up / diverting of the inlets.
It's not like the Aral Sea (a puddle), it's a successful manmade confluence of water sources.
The question is, what happened to the water sources?
Is there a leak or something, somebody should check ?!

I was there in 2000 and the water was approximately 30 to 40 feet from that picnic table.😞
Still looks beautiful but it's too bad that the water is gone way way down
