My buddy has a 2 wheel drive truck and has some property he goes to occasionally that once every few years can get a little muddy. 99% of the time the property is dry though. He doesn't feel a 4x4 is neccessary because he would literally use it about once every 3 years. So we took a 3,500 lbs UTV winch, mounted just like you did here on a hitch, and bought a snatch block. The whole setup weighs 35 lbs. He just keeps the small winch and hitch in his toolbox on the back of his truck. When he gets stuck, he just plugs the hitch into the rear and then uses jumper cables from his front battery to the winch to power it. If you do this, use 4 gauge or 2 gauge jumper cables minimum. It works perfectly. Turns the 3,500 lb winch into a 7,000 lb winch with the snatch block. It can easily pull his fullsize F150 out.
I love this, fabulous work. I’m building something similar for my atv. But I have welded a hitch to the front and rear so I can use the winch even when I have the trailer on, as it gets in the way for me.
I bought the same winch and bought a slide in hitch step from harbor frieght. I drilled holes in the step and mounted the winch on it. looks good because its diamond plate and also only cost 95 bucks for everything. Works well. Nice video
i used a heavy duty strap and strapped the winch inside a uhaul truck, used a car battery for power, and winched a gold wing up the loading rampe and i walked beside it on a ramp of my own. the gold wing was unloaded with fork lift so no worries unloading.
The main motor and drum assembly is identical to my old Warn 1700. The relays is those were a POS and I've upgraded it to a late Runva style contactor. 2000 lbs is a stretch here and it won't last long if you work it at that load. Figure around half that. Not a bad winch for the money though.
I plan on doing that for my truck and put a receiver on the front of my trailer to pull loads onto it. Also I plan on doing the same with my vice with an additional receiver on my work bench.
Nice work. If only I knew how to weld. Now I know you posted this over a decade ago but I’m hoping that in that time you realized that you installed the hook the wrong way. The hook needs to be facing upwards lol.
The duty cycle on most of the electric winches is pretty crappy... On this particular winch, you can only use it for 45 seconds of each 15 minutes at max load... It's a 5% duty cycle... So, 45 seconds of use, 14m15s of rest... More than that and you can overheat it and damage it... Even the expensive name brands though don't have a great duty cycle rating... If you want a winch that can have a 100% duty cycle, you're going to need to be looking at hydraulic winches... I had one on my Jeep XJ and I could winch all day and not have to worry about it overheating...
I only needed it to drag a 500lb lathe - The car is just an "anchor". Used it once and sold it. I think the largest they offer is rated at 12,000lbs (its Chinese so if that's anywhere close to actual capacity who knows).
Great Idea. Unfortunately I had no luck with that style of winch. I tore two apart on my ATV. I think that this style is made by one or two manufacturers in China.
Yeah, I just hooked it up to a Car Battery sitting off to the side in the video. I'm using this to lower heavy machinery into my basement - the car makes a nice anchor, so I didn't hard wire it to, or make an outlet from the Cars electrical system.
I just wanted to use my car as a stationary anchor so I could lower a machine into my basement - I left the box just sitting next to the battery, but wouldn't be much effort to mount it in the trunk.
Great Installation, however, where did you get the power from to the winch? Since this is a small winch to work on an ATV with a motorcycle 12V battery, i wonder if I can feed the battery From my car trailer electric plug to recharge the battery. Any thoughts or ideas? Thank you in advance for your reply
It's an everlast 3-in-1 Tig, Stick and Plasma. I believe its the 256A model. Few years old I got it in a trade. Works fine, but I don't give it much use as I'm still learning so cannot comment on how durable it is.
NOadventure I think I removed the rollers to get the hook through. Should just need a screw driver to pry off the e clips from one end of a roller. Be careful the clip doesn't fly away and get lost.
You can use a heavy duty pair of 4 gauge or 2 gauge jumper cables that are about 25 feet long. Just hook it from your front battery to the winch. Just swap the cables around to reverse the winch.
OK now we know you are a clever guy with a lot of tools at home, thats not for everybody, and dont think anybody cares about if you are clever or not, thumbs down of course
I was specifically looking for someone that has mounted an a tv winch to their truck so I can pull people from the snow. This guy gave me all the info I needed to help other people.
Maybe you could make one of these videos in each Language so everyone could understand it?! Oh, you already did! Lol

....finally .....someone has done video of the winch simply winding the cable in.....now i can visualize the speed .....thank you....
I love silent self explanatory videos. Great build here !

been wanting a smaller winch like this for a minute.....so as i no longer have to mount larger winch cradle for small jobs ...good shit

I was looking for a plasma cutter too but I would rather have all three in one unit like yours I like it

I like the tape nut holder.

Thanks for the suggestions you have discussed here.
Im gonna do this with one of those winches. Ive needed something like this to haul out wood i cut and this is what i think i need

Awesome video!!! Very creative I must say!!!
Great job
I think you are smart with a little bit of common sense.. Nice video

Because the car was going to be stationary and it was just a one time deal I just used a 12v battery connected to the winch right next to it.
The winch can be removed from the hitch by undoing the two screws - no changes are made to it.

nice I need one of those I like that welder to what is that a plasma cutter / welder?

Probably too much current needed for the winch than the lighting harness can provide.
Can you take it off and put it back on ?
....unde se comercializează așa ceva... !?
Great idea. Can you connect this to the trailor power harness if available? Thanks
also how did you power it?
How much for one ?
where are you from ?
Very cool, did you make the battery connections easily removable, if so how?

where did you mount the black box that you hook the switch too can you show me
why are you using a tig welder? why not a little mig ?
Only because I have a TIG.
i just re-installed the winch on my atv. keep an eye on my channel the next couple of days for the video
What did you use to power and control the winch? Did you just clamp it to spare battery or something?
