I just watched the movie. I thought it was great. More accessible than his other movies for a wider audience. I heard some younger guys complaining as I left but I think they probably assumed it was a normal action movie and doubt they'd seen his earlier films. My favourite part of the movie were the stunning visuals and cinematography including making great use of the beautiful and often harsh landscapes.
I absolutely loved the film as well. Unfortunately gone are the days when movies like The Northman will do well in the box office. Its not the 90s anymore where a film like Braveheart is a worldwide BO hit. The mainstream moviegoing audience's interests have changed they'll go out to the cinemas for the superhero blockbusters but will wait for original movies not tied to a franchise, indies and other stuff to hit streaming.
Going to see it this afternoon. Can't wait. It's too bad some people will not understand how special this is. Some people talk about indigenous cultures but they don't talk enough about the people who were the indigeous cultures in Europe. Yes, we know about the Celts.

Artsy weird as fuck movies that eggers makes don't do that good and they never did. Those types of movies are just not what the average movie goer wants to watch and that never changed. They are great movies but there is no denying that they are weird and very odd films. Audiences also don't like slow burns. This is one of the few high budget artsy films and there was a reason why arsty movies never had high budgets. Don't act like we consistently saw high budget arthouse films in the 80s and 90s.
I love that psychedelia and incest are still relatively commerical for him lmao.. it's like when Gaspar Noe did CLIMAX and Im like finally!! A movie for the whole family!!

I disagree on his take on Nolan's IMAX aspect ratio changes. I love that Nolan has decided to film select scenes in IMAX in order to make it more immersive. When I watch his blu rays at home and the AR changes to cover the whole TV screen i absolutely love it. Not many directors keep the IMAX scenes in home media so I really appreciate it,
I think what Eggers is talking about is when within a given scene the aspect ratio changes from shot-to-shot. It happens a lot in Dunkirk and I do tend to find it distracting and annoying, but when an entire sequence plays out in IMAX like in Tenet or First Man, I love it.

If you watch this movie just understand that it is basically a viking fantasy movie. It is not a standard action movie. There is a lot of time spent on religion and magic. I know some people who don't like this movie because they were expecting a more shallow action movie. But the movie is much deeper than that. I happen to love the movie. I like how much time he spends on magic and religion emphasizing just how important it was to people in medieval times and how much they actually believed in it. Especially the magic/shaman aspect. You dont see much of that in historical movies.
I wish some time was spent from when the kid sailed away and when the man rowed back to help me care for the character and feel invested in his mission. The "fantasy" scenes were amazing. "The Northman" was visually and auditorily (?) appealing, but in the end, didn't help me feel or care for the lead character
Anyone know if I can donate money to Robert and the whole production crew? It won't be much but I've only seen it once and saw how poorly its done at the box office
I’ve watched a lot of Northman interviews with Eggers, and have been struck by how many of the same questions he’s been asked, and how in many of those interviews he appeared pretty disinterested. This was, by far, the most informative and excellent interview of his I’ve seen for this film. You guys asked unique and interesting questions, and it’s immediately obvious that Eggers was much happier about participating in this versus others. Well done!
Most people seem to be stoked on the insanely loud volumes at movie theaters, while honestly that’s the exact reason I don’t go. It’s often so loud to me that i can’t even enjoy to the movie.

My grandma is going through a horrible time with her health atm and is basically bedridden and showing all the MCU movies to her brought so much joy and made her forget about what she was going through. Can't deny the postive impact of these movies. I always say that if you don't like something just dont watch/consume it and let the others that do enjoy it. SPOILERS . . . . . All of the men in this movie are evil and lust/power driven, the main character is self aware of this fact and in the end chooses to meet his fate by getting revenge and sacrificing himself. This kills off all ties to him for his kids to be. It is a conscious choice by the main character to not raise his own kids in fear of them developing the same toxic traits that were passed down to him by the same type of violent men who surrounded his upbringing. All of Eggers movies use an authentic past to drive home and provide commentary for current social issues that have actually always existed in modern times. 'The VVitch' is about what it means to be a woman and finding empowerment in a patriarchal system. 'The Lighthouse' is about the pitfalls of capitalism and how caste is rewarded above merit even if it promises the opposite. It also deals with repressed feelings and how that can escalate to violence and extreme social isolation (aka toxic masculinity). 'The Northman' is no different... its woke shit my dude, and THAT is why it's awesome.

i still do not understand how people keep sucking up to Eggers on this monstrosity of a film. this was an atrocious story, chewed out mix of artistic freedom and a shot at "popcorn" cinema but in the end it was a mismatched incoherent repetative spoonfed boring peice of sh*t. THE worst movie i have everwhatched bit big part to the lacking and unimaginative story. far from creative or interesting. for all the interesting and beautifull effort Eggers had put in this film with great historical research and the rare visually stunnign shots, he had clearly forgot that in the end story is the fundamental., the rest is to help the story blossom. this movie was as vertilizer on a dead rose bush. i expected a lot more from the narative side. Summary, a thematically inconsistent Unimaginative boring retelling of hamlet, where eggers went too deep into meta filmmaking and forgot the narrative

The movie is great! It is not for everyone but is very mythological and suspenseful like most of Egger's work. Some scenes are breathtaking.
