It's obvious you are kind & gentle with them. You didn't know what could happen & now you do. I wouldn't have known either. Sorry you had to go through that.
That’s why I always separate my broody hens and their eggs and chicks from the flock. Other birds will peck them to check them out. I use XL dog crates or chicken hutches. Never lost any like that. Good luck in the future!
We just let a broody hen hatch some eggs we got elsewhere (no roos). Once they hatched they went in their own pen and mama just now decided theyre big enough that she sleeps with her sisters again. We are not letting the babies out until they're big enough to defend themselves from the one jealous spoiled hen we have.
just a tip if you have a broody chicken ALWAYS ISOLATE IT FROM THE OTHER CHICKENS. the chickens will always have a pecking order and will peck the chicks to death because they woulkd automatically be at the bottom. just like they do if small birds get stuck in there cages. if you suspect the mother won't take care of the chicks or is trying to kill them don't waste time and move them the mother ASAP. and there is starter feed in stores or just use cracked corn ( I used both before they work just fine). and of course use a safe bowl that isn't to deep because the chicks could drown your bowl seemed fine. and if you want to keep your food and water clean put bricks under it or any other material. when raising chicks don't mix younger ones with older ones! again they will have a pecking order and if they are young they will trample the even younger ones. none of this info was site but from years of experience and I hope it helps.
One of the hens here hatched a chick, it was brown-ish orange, and his neck had no feathers. *It's those type of breed* I could see the mother hen, look at her chick confused, because she's mostly white and her tail is black. But a bit of brown on her body as well. She would gently nibble the brown spots on the chicks head, but she never pecked it hard. She had 5 chicks before this time, she took care of them till they couldn't even peep anymore.
After reading a few of these comments I'm sickened that people can lash out at someone for a MISTAKE! we all learn from them some are harder than others. Now he has learned how to handle this situation in the future. where has our compassion gone?
gingerlover43015 don't have animals if you are not going to properly prepare to take care of them. Yes, mistakes happen. But this was totally avoidable. It sickens YOU that he is being criticized? It sickens ME that he didn't take 2 minutes to research correct care for his flock. I have raised multiple broods of chicks and never had this problem because i actually gave a damn and studied proper care and management. So yes, i WILL criticize him. As they say, if the shoe fits.
allyssa nehls well I guess we all can't be perfect like you, I've raised chickens for years always with other chickens and this has never happened we dont know the circumstances behind this but you all are perfect for judging someone based on your internet knowledge of everything.
I have 4 hens sharing 5 peeps right now with 2 other hens watching and not caring and the rooster being protective of them all and feeding them and keeping guard. It's a random act usually done by first time moms. Don't feel too bad. Not all chickens are good moms.
I have 3 chicks left. But i have two chickens and she made 4 chicks and i found 2 of them and there doing great. And chickens are cute. And rest in peace chick 😞
It looked like you just kept adding eggs so they didn't have the same hatch date. The baby wasn't kept away from the rooster. Wasn't given any chick stater food. Water wasn't in a safe dish it could have fallen in and drown. This video was sad do some research
I know now of some things that I'd need to improve (separation is the most important one). All eggs were added at once, and had the same hatch date, but the black hen stopped being broody after hatching the first one, so I put the rest in an incubator.
Gilbert Trevino Because she isn't laying eggs, a broody hen doesn't need calcium-rich layerfeed. However, because she infrequently leaves her nest to eat, thefeed you give her should pack a wallop. Think 18 to 20 percent protein chick starter: It's nutrient-rich, and it's what the chicks will eat when theyhatch.. Do your research I think I know what I'm doing
My rooster was chick aggressive for 2 months, and his mate had rejected the chicks and so I was raising them... And around 2 months was when his mate went broody for the second time and he became a depressed lump that just laid in the hallway. So feeling bad I picked him up and plopped him with the chicks I was raising and after the babies tried to eat his comb (I poked them to tell them "no"), they got along fine ever since. When the second batch of chicks hatched, even with the same humidity issues as before that made me place them in an incubator to hatch them, I offered a chick back to her and she rolled it back under herself. That was when I knew she was ready to parent. After all the others hatched and were rolled under her, she was a wonderful mama and Rooroo alternated between caring for the 3 month olds and his mate and new brood, it was really sweet to watch. Now they are all grumpy adult fluffs who will try to hatch a potato. XP I have some vids of them as they grew, mainly so I could keep track of how old they were. Edit: Also a tip if you ever keep a broody with non-broodies or suspect a broody is still laying eggs even when brooding eggs (It does happen), I marked the eggs and removed the unmarked ones during my "broody-butt check" to candle them and check the progress. I recommend doing it with a hen that trusts you though, as even a docile hen who doesn't mind you will become a monster in the nestbox with defending her eggs, or like with my current broodies I am trying to break, defend the eggs by deafening you and turning into giant poofballs!
I use to have chickens (silkies) like the black one and when ever she had babies they would die. Found out later that the bigger brown chickens would get her so agitated being around that she would accidentally trample them with her small legs. :(
Thanks, I know now! One hen can hatch several eggs at once, that's not a problem. But separation is a must! I am now bringing up another chick that was successfully hatched by Bea :)
So in my experience... chickens are totally racist. That dark mama killed the light colored puff balls because they didn’t look like her. This has happened to me several times, even when mama is totally separated from The rest of the flock. I now segregate by dark colored hens and Roos apart from the light colored ones if and when I want them to hatch out babies. If a dark colored one accidentally get in with the light colored mama... I will separate it out immediately.
You can hatch a light chick with a dark hen and vice versa. People do it all the time. There are even breeds out there who's chicks are different colors, light and dark. The problem isn't with the color of the chick. The problem could be the hen or the health of the chick. I have never heard of anyone having problems hatching dark chicks with light hens or vice versa. Unheard of with responsible breeders.
guinea gazette, well you have heard of it now. I have successfully done it with light and dark too... about as often as it is fine, it is also not so fine. Because it had been fine in the past I was shocked the first time my light mama killed all the dark babies (and only the dark babies) in her brood, and then the same thing happened with a dark mama and her little yellow puff balls. My birds had a huge run, OTCO organic feed, clean coop, warmth, and were healthy and happy spoiled hens. The hens had a separate area but were still with the flock, But it was a mixed flock. The color was the only factor I could come up with.
Son Goku, I've sadly seen a lot where certain standardized breeds will discard neglect bully or destroy eggs chicks or other chickens added to their area, same as some pigeons and other animals will do.. from many years as a paid responsible scientist, hobbyist, rescuer, breeder, and vet assistant. It's uncommon, but can happen, and now you've heard from someone with credentials as well. In nature it's common for animals, mainly males but sometimes mothers and older siblings, to kill young that do not look normal or like them. They may make sounds smells or movements that by experience or instinct are off, so the parents kill them believing the young would be at a disadvantage, and make a mercy killing.
My hen is light and had dark and light babies. She didn’t kill any but when I tried to add two more dark babies she tried to kill them so I am hand raising the two
comandofilm Could have happened to everybody. Don't take it so hard. We hatched this year for the first time baby chicks and had a lot to learn too. That is too small of a coop to keep small chicks in, it most likely got stepped on or accidentally invaded the space of the other chicken and got attacked. I never had problems with my baby chicks getting killed but I also had a pretty big chicken coop with a lot of both roosting and floor space for all the chickens to spread out in. Really that coop isn't big enough for more than two birds anyway...
Never mix a setting hen with other hens they will peck them and he should have not let the hen leave nest with other chicks not hatched . If you do not know what to do or understand chickens read some books .
It can happen, although there are some breeds specially bred for laying (e.g. Warrens, etc. - like Llinos in this video) where this instinct has been minimised!

Thanks Connie. As Jayknee said I was supposed to separate the mother and chick, but I didn't know enough at the time. It was my first time, and gutted about this death, but now I know better!
comandofilm that's not it at all! Why on earth would you house the other hen with them? I red hen was the on who killed it, not bea. If your gonna play with life then you should know what the heck you're doing.
Chick died because of you the none setting hen killed it you can't mix broody hens with chicks with laying hens. When the chick is making noise inside the egg that makes the hen except it a hen that is not setting wont except these chicks and will peck them to death you should read on them before doing this again Connie Alford
Maybe the rat who did that .. he often attacks the head of the chicks .. sorry for your case .. good luck for next time .. i advise you to make at least 10 to 13 eggs depending on the size of the hen ... and make a nest quite hollow and deep ..to maximize the chance
Thanks :). Well, rats were kept away from the coop in this case. The bigger number would definitely increase chances to survive, but I know now that my greatest mistake was to leave the other hen in too :/
don't remove the chicks from the hens! just raise them separate from the flock, where they can see and hear each other through a fence until the chicks are around 5-7 weeks old, then slowly introduce them to each other while you are around for several days. that way, the chicks become part of the flock easily. you also want to feed them chick starter until around 16-18 weeks old. you have to switch the whole flock to chick starter if your feed is where the chicks can get it because you will damage the pullet's system if the get calcium too early. make sure to put out free choice calcium for your hens - the chicks won't eat it but the hens really need it if they are on chick feed.
Who ever killed it hope that Chicano dies and that was sad sorry for loss I just lost a a dog but then we got a baby turkey and then we put it down with her hen and it almost killed it but then we saved it and now it's healthy
Usually no as most farmers who provide to supermarkets and shops, free ranged or caged, prefer to only keep hens. However if you have a farmer's market, you do have a chance. Even if the farmer says no to the eggs being fertilized, as it often grosses people out even though there's nothing different about them unless you keep them at 37 C for 3 days, there's still the possibility that they own a rooster or two.
