  • 1x vs. 2x drivetrains might be one of the most contentious topics in gravel cycling. In the last 3 years, more riders have won Unbound Gravel using a 2x drivetrain, but diehards like Bruce still believe in the simplicity of a 1x. Bruce explains the pros and cons, why he’s ditched the front derailleur for racing, why he prefers smaller chainrings, and why he’s also become a fan of electronic drivetrains like SRAM AXS.

    0:00 Bruce is a massive 1x shill
0:54 There’s no room for civil discourse here
1:58 The proof is in the pudding
    2:33 1x cons… so many cons, Bruce
3:24 I agree, normies should run smaller chainrings
4:07 Yeah, I HATE big jumps, Bruce
5:59 You’re losing SO many watts!
7:05 1x “pros”... pffft. CLEARLY user error
8:09 Your mind is weak, Bruce.
8:57 OK, I like electronic shifting too
    10:11 Straight to jail
    11:13 2x 4EVER!

Agree with your opinions on 1x. I’m also running an eagle mullet Force/x01 AXS and love it. Converted my partners hybrid bike from 3x Shimano Acera to 1x Rival/GX AXS for simplicity and to bring to races for backup parts. Also converted my tri bike to 1x Force AXS. Will never go back to mechanical or 2x!

So glad to see this video! I have purchased the parts to change my 2023 Lauf SIgla to a full mullet set up, ( I have been a 2x guy until i bought this bike) and just haven’t committed to swapping the parts yet. I was also glad to hear that you are doing the 10-50 rather than the 52. I read a lot of people going to the 52, but I am thinking that’s just too much, ( for what I do). I think this is the week I will make the switch. I am going to try it in VT in a few weeks, and then going to Hico TX. Just a fun chasing old guy, not competitive, but love to ride gravel. Great Video! I’ll be routing for you at Unbound!

Great presentation.. I'm an old guy who's racing xc mtb and researching gearing for my near future first gravel build. I'm leaning heavily towards a 1x as I'm comfortable with the slightly larger gaps. After a 2nd place in my first gravel race on my full sus xc bike against 12 others in my age class (all on true gravel bikes) it seems a logical choice in gearing . I also demoed a gravel bike with a 1x12 11-42 and 40t chainring.. i felt it wasnt fast enough on top end for racing ..the 10t cog is a better choice and a 50 or 51t cassette x 40t chainrimg provides gearing for any situation I'd be in racing the 60 plus age group.. tjamks for postimg this video. It was more insight with further considerations as well.

for me 2x is really just for bikepacking where you need to go up really steeps stuff with a heavy load. Or if you're running an older bike where bigger range in the rear isn't possible.

awesome thanks for the great video i'd say since you have access to so much candy just bring an extra rear derailleur, chain. cables seat binder bolt, stem and handlebars, pedals, spokes, wheelset, batteries, saddle, shoes and your crew can just replace them otherwise just return it to the shop if you didn't use it. overkill but you have to prepare for every scenario good luck very excited for your upcoming videos and races!

Your 1X setup is perfect. Would never want a front derailleur on a gravel bike. Unless maybe you are someone that rides it on a lot of road and the occasional dirt road. Also, if you are doing group road rides then maybe stick with 2X

42t oval and 10-50 Garbaruk/GRX 11s (and 12s GRX mech) setup for me. Can use the 10t on fast descents and also climb anything with the 42/50 combo. XX1 eagle chain for durability as well for a few thousand miles of worry free riding. You couldnt pay me to run 2x on anything.

    Thanks for an awesome review!
I have been wanting to get a SRAM Force AXS XPLR 1x group set for a while now on Cervelo Aspero.
It seems there's shortage in stock currently?
Hoping, that sometime this year stock will be replenished by SRAM.

Now if you could just charge the electronic shifter with an internal hub...that would be a cool thing.

SRAM GX 2x derailleur shifts a narrow wide big to/from a normal small with 36x24. Something to try with bigger rings.

I personally hate 1x drivetrains on anything but mountain bikes and CX race bikes and think anything with drop bars should have 2x. But for a muddy version of Unbound or any other gravel race, 1x could be tempting…

Couldn't Agree More > it doesn't have to be either/or.
My personal opinion: if your legs can't push 'em (gear range) - what are they doing on your bike.

You say 40t chainring but you have a 44t on your bike on the video?

I dont buy the cadence complaints people have with the jumps, with 2x you have a massive jump every time you shift your FD. 1x on gravel, 2 on road

When 1x drivetrain come with something like 600% gear ratio i would use it

      E-Thirteen sells a 9-52 which is 578%, I mean that's basically 600%

    A) intended purpose
    B) can your legs push them.
    Done.
    Good luck everybody in 2024

The sram chain is not popular among the efficiency nerds. Also not popular, an 11 tooth cog.
    You should pack chain lube.
I’d definitely look into anti-stick materials to spray on the frame.
    Don’t forget the paint stick.
Also, your best bet is a “negative split” pacing strategy.
    Crazy but true
