I'm from Vietnam, near the border with Cambodia. In general when we say Cambodian when referring to people from Cambodia, while Khmer is treated as more of an ethnic group. There are Cambodian people that are Vietnamese ethnically, and there are Khmer who lives in Vietnam. In short, Cambodian is for people from Cambodia regardless of race/ ethnicity, Khmer is for the ethnicity originated in Cambodia.

Heng Sovandy i don’t what it’s really called in Cambodia. But in Vietnam the general idea is Khmer is an ethnicity/language originated from Cambodia, while Cambodian is the people who have Kampuchea citizenship.

As a Khmer or Cambodian, I don’t think it matter really. If people ask me “where am I from?” in English, I would reply them “I’m Cambodian.” But on the other hand, if u speak to me in Khmer, I would say “I’m Khmer.” In my opinion, the reason behind this is just because we want to say something that other people can understand/pronounce. There are many vowels and syllables in our alphabet and language that foreign people can not pronounce. (Just like Asian people who live in U.S have an English name). And plus we are known as and called ourselves “Khmer” since the ancient Khmer, even before the Khmer Empire. There are craves on ancient stones of us calling ourselves Khmer. Hope this can help :))

Khmer and Cham are NOT inter-changeable, they are different ethnic groups within Cambodia. Cambodia/Kampuchea is what the Khmers call their country, and like you said the Chams used to have their own Country in present day central Vietnam. Both speak completely different languages.

I am currently living in Cambridge, UK and I went to Cambodia this Chiristmas. When I got off the plane I saw the word Cambodge. I had a feeling that after almost a day of flight, I was back home again.
That is same like in Russia in Russian. Ethnic Russian in Russian is called "Ruskiy" while other non-ethnic Russian person who lives there are "Rossiyanin". I guess same for Cambodia, Khmer are ethnic Cambodian people, while Cambodians are all people who live there nevertheless ethnicity.

But Cambodian is not officially called in Cambodia since the National ID card for Cambodian people is called “Khmer Identity Card”.
In Cambodia, it’s different. You are referred to as Khmer no matter what ethnicity you are. You can be of Chinese descent or Vietnamese descent, but still referred to as a Khmer person unless you clearly differentiate yourself as something else to the public.
We’re Khmer! And no we’re not Cham. And as I am Cambodian myself I would like to say that we called ourselves Cambodian simply to foreigners so they can understand and pronounce and also know where we are from! And if we speak with the locals we would say that we’re Khmer!

I would like thank 'Name Explain' for this educative video. As a Cambodian national or Khmer, I personally addressed my own nationality and language as "Khmer". In terms of linguistic, especially to be addressed by foreigners, it is safe to call the locals by using both approaches which is either Khmer or Cambodian.

It’s just like the people of the Netherlands are mostly called Dutch than the Netherlanders. Whereas the people of Cambodia are mostly called Cambodians than Khmers. Both terms of each country are interchangeable.

As a Cambodian myself, when speaking in Khmer, I don’t call myself “Khnhom chea Kampuchea” which is lit. “I’m Cambodian”, I’d say “Khnhom chea Khmae” which means “I’m Khmer”. It was used normally back in the day until 2000 when the country changed the citizenship/nationality term to “Khmer” (in just Khmer but other languages still use the term Cambodian and also used the Cambodian passport but not the national ID card) which is now usually used to fill in paperworks, personal info, etc. So for some Cambodians who aren’t sure what to refer to themselves would mostly say they’re Khmer which sometimes makes the foreigners feel confused but it’s the same thing.

Khmer are the major ethnic in Cambodia. We refer people of Cambodia are Khmer, however not all people in my country are Khmer. Cambodian are the people who are Cambodia citizen. Even the country's name Cambodia, alot of Khmer like to call the Khmer country as simple.

To my knowledge, there are two dominant forms of address related to this video: 1) a place is named after it's people, or 2) the people are named after the place they are from. Canadians are from Canada but Deutschland is the land of the Deutsche (Germany is the land of the Germans). Ofcourse there are examples that don't follow either of these two, but these are the ones I see most often. Sometimes it's a result of centuries of change, for example the Romans naming the British islands Britannia (and thus the people the Britons), which was then conquered partly by the Angles and Saxons to form the Anglo-Saxons who then got conquered by Danes briefly then conquered again by the Normans (who themsleves were formerley Franks conquered by the Norse) to become the English... Lovely bit of transition :)

The only other ethnic group that have Khmer blood are the Chinese. That's why we Khmer refer to them as Khmer Kat Chen. Meaning khmer mix Chinese blood and there are millions of them.

I dont really know how to latinise the sound 'er' in khmer - because 'eye' is partially how you say it but you need to make an emphasis on the 'yuh' sound at the end by slightly drawing in air. Also, instead of an 'ay' sound, it's a sort of 'aeiyy' if it makes sense

Well for it to be on wiki and the books I am fine with Cambodian or Khmer. If you would like to do some deeper research before it was khmer it was Khom. The origin of the Khmer language was derived from Sanskrit. There was a monologue from the great Samdech Sangha Raja Jhotañano Chuon Nath, Supreme Patriach of Cambodia. One of an old monologue that I listened to a longtime ago was he discussed the translation of the khom language to present day khmer. I hope this helps.

A few Anglophones I met (especially Australians & Kiwis) tend to refer to a Malaysian as Malay, although Malay is only one of the several communities we have here. We call ourselves Malaysians and refer to our background as either Malay, Chinese, Indian etc among ourselves, but would say Malaysian Chinese etc to our international friends; except Malays, they would just say Malays.

Kampujia is the official name for writing only like "kingdom of Kampujia" but in term of daily speaking we never use Kampujia we say "Srok Khmer" means Cambodia or "Khmer yerng" means We.

Malay (Malaysian) people already link to Cambodian people (Champa Malay) a long time ago. Malay call kampuchea @ cambodia country as Kemboja. Kemboja in malay means frangipani flower.
Some countries have different names for all citizens and for the titular nation. This is one of the cases. The same here in Russia.
Cambodian is more internationally accepted by other countries but we here call ourselves Khmer as to preserve our culture and heritage.

Khmer is a word derived from the word Khemarak which might be an ancient Pali word meaning peaceful people or people living in peace. After king Jayavarman II united the Chenla kingdom in 790AD, the Khmer Empire is established, and people from the Khmer empire called themselves Khmer people or Khmer. You should learn more about the Khmer Empire or Angkor Empire, it's an interesting topic. You will find the definition of Khmer in Khmer Chuon Nath dictionary.

This is actually very well explained. Therefore, I would like to give a bit in-depth here. It’s true that is perfectly fine when you speak English calling your self as Cambodian. Therefore, when you are speaking in Khmer, it is weir to say that you are Kampuchea. It’s doesn’t matter you are Vietnamese or Chinese or Cham if your first language is Khmer and you are born in Cambodia you end up calling your self Khmer. And of course Khmer is a prefer term to call people who have Cambodian root.

You see this in Norwegian. The land is called Norge but the ethnic group are nordmenn. Now the root is similar as Norge stems from old Norse as north way. And nordmenn being Norwegian for northmenn.
You are right about the word khmer even in the khmer history book can't even tell. That person said it come from that then another person said it from something else. So confusing. Well either way the word Cambodian is more correct. Oh and If u check about Thai it is simlier to that too. Thailand is the place the people there called Thai and Thai is a language in Thailand

As someone of Vietnamese extraction (with Vietnam being right next door), I can say that *"Khmer" refers to the dominant ethnic group in Cambodia* , while *a "Cambodian" is a citizen of Cambodia regardless of their ethnic origin.*
A Vietnamese person from Cambodia may not be an ethnic Khmer, but they are still "Cambodian".
