  • In this video I discuss buying a second hand caravan and the pro's & con's for buying a caravan from a dealership and from a private seller.
Each option has both positive and negative elements and I highlight a few of these points and also discuss some useful resources to make sure the caravan purchase goes smoothly. The Approved Workshop Scheme Pre-purchase inspection and CRIS registration should be be resources that every potential purchase should involve, especially when buying from a private seller.

Dan, this will be helpful for those looking to buy a caravan and will help them to make an informed choice on which way to go. Buying privately was the best for me (limited budget and able to do my own repairs). Before I bought the Lunar, I viewed a few caravans. When I looked at the Lunar, I knew it had been cared for and the family were genuine so I made them one sensible offer which was accepted on the spot. It needed a couple of minor repairs and has been mostly fine ever since. It subsequently developed a spongy floor (it wasn't like that when I bought it) which I was able to repair myself and I found out that it had already been done before and it has been fine ever since I fixed it.

Good info there Dan I think if u a first time buyer u would b safer buying off a dealer as u don't know what to to look out for when buying a use van and if u first timer don't splash out a lot of money on your fist van as it very rare u get the layout rite first that works for u so u lend up changing again at some point start low and work your way up when u know what lay out works for u .kev

Good advice. We thought our Lunar Quasar was everything we needed, but it proved not to be, so we sold it and brought a Lunar Clubman SB which has proved to be very acceptable.

Another informative video Dan. As an addendum to buying from a dealer they can usually arrange a finance package to suit.

good point, dealerships can and do offer so much more than flogging a caravan.
      Hope you are both well....

Great video Dan with some very good info. We brought a brand new van in 2013 and it came with everything, last year traded it in for a 2nd hand van which didn't even come with a gas hose for your bottles and no battery, so my advice, take everything out of your old van.

Top tips there Dan. Some great deals when buying private but the piece of mind from buying from a dealer is crucial, Just need to find a good dealer! Cheers Martin

Very informative video. We are after our 2nd caravan after having an old Swift Challenger some years ago. I like the layout of the ones starting in the vid at about 47 seconds, anyone any idea what it is?

Thought you might be interested in what can go tragically wrong. Just before lockdown, we arranged to buy a 1 year old Bailey Phoenix 440. We were due to collect the caravan on the Friday after the PM announced the lockdown so obviously did not happen. Fast forward a couple of months & Yorkshire Caravans have worked out how to do it as contact free as possible. Took our old caravan in for valuation. Arranged to pick new van up on the Friday. Transpired that because of time elapsed finance has to be resubmitted (after cooling our heels for an hour), we then got a call to say that we would have to contribute £1300 more owing to finance company not wanting to lend full amount (less our £2.1k deposit) & worth noting other lenders happy to lend fully at higher APR. The real kicker however was that they had sold our old caravan BEFORE the deal had gone through!
Whole sale fell through, they had to give us the £2.1k in cash & just picked up a 7 year old Swift Ace Statesman with identical layout

Looking at private caravan sales quite often include a motor mover. All the dealers I’ve seen charge extra for a mover that’s already installed on said van.

Another good video; many thanks. We just collected our new (to us) 2003 Swift Archway yesterday and super excited to be trying it out for the first time next weekend at a local to home site. Have watched lots of your videos over the last couple of weeks and picked up so many hints and tips. We bought ours privately after viewing loads in one day we certainly had a good feel for what we wanted and whether what we were told was correct or whether it 'almost correct'. Once we had viewed a few we could tell what was genuine and what wasn't. Tim

Great vlog Dan, very interesting. We have found, if you are struggling to get your caravan into a different dealer, than the one you purchased your caravan from original, there are plenty of authorised repairers scattered across the country, which can be found on manufactures website’s. Thank you for sharing. Cheers Stuart.

Hi Dan, just a note from personal experience when part exchanging my 2006 caravan. I have a damp meter, used it regularly and never found an issue. The caravan had been serviced Twice in the two years we owned it with no damp issues identified. However during the dealer inspection they identified a significant damp issue under the fixed bed storage area. When we arranged to discuss the consequences with the dealer I took my £20 damp meter and compared results with the dealers professional unit. There were no differences in reading. He then pulled back the floor liner where he had cut it, and exposed the actual floor. It was obviously very wet and read off the scale on both meters. Only explanation was the floor liner was too thick to be penetrated by the meter probes, unless maybe you press really press hard or peel back the liner. He also mentioned that our van was prone to water ingress in this area so obviously knew where to look. Cheers John & Al 👍

Nice video Dan. I priced ours cheaper than a dealers just to keep it saleable. Our caravan had soooo many options and accessories and everything you’d said ours had it😁 I understand it can be unknown but if you buyer aware it’s good. I’m not out to get people but I know ours had issues and I will say those as I don’t want to sell a turd!! Anyway nice to see you back, Cheers Oliver

I sold a Hunter 34 giving up a sailing caravan on the Gulf of Mexico and bought a 2013 Bailey from a Hampshire Dealer 4500 miles away :) Reason - my heart wants to spend June to Sept in SW England (always home) :) :) .Amortizing costs over 5 years (on paper) a Bailey and KIA appeared to be the cheapest way of doing it. Won't step foot in her until June and Intend to do a vlog on the journey with a twist. Without Dan and others I'd be in a bad place - I do have an excellent mobile professional who has been invaluable and has checked out the Bailey (after I bought it :)) So It's jacked up and ready for its foolish owner. BTW my advice for what its worth - never rely on family - your dreams aren't theirs :)
