FIX THIS TITLE! Liv Tyler found an African American ANCESTOR! NOT a DESCENDANT. "Descendant" and "ancestor" mean DIFFERENT THINGS.

Seriously. How embarrassing that a show about genealogy doesn’t know the difference between an ancestor and a descendant.

Ancestors are the people who came before you; Your parents, their parents, etc. Your Descendants are the people who come after you; Your children and their children, etc.

@@marthahales2430 Historically, “ancestors” are the people who come before, from whom one is descended. A “descendant” is a person who descends from a particular ancestor. It's worth noting that both of these terms now have broader senses, where they can refer to predecessors, or those that come after that aren't people.Mar 5, 2023

Indentured servitude is such an interesting concept. I learned that my German ancestor who first came to America in the early 1700s was brought over by a wealthy Dutch man. He spent a decade essentially serving the man in various capacities, and upon earning his release headed out west and became a cowboy for some years to make his money before returning and settling in West Virginia where the family remained for several generations. The family went on to be split during the Civil War, some fighting for the Union, others for the South.

Ms. Liv Tyler. Your ancestors lived a good grounded life under conditions of a particular lineage of a choice not of their own. To be able to survive through those years without much lost of life is of good fortune and talent today. The uncovering of Mulatto and Caucasian indentured servants is significant and leading to many Caucasian and Multiracial persons going further into genealogy research from the Atlantic coast north and south to tell and write the stories of hardship and triumphs years later but also a historical context that connect families to whom they are. Blessings on your continued search and new findings of many cultures and ethnicities.

Yep. Besides that, it's quite a stretch to make "guardianship" of a boy first mean that the boy must have been an indentured servant of Captain Wright and then turn that into another form of slavery.
Indentured servitude meant that someone paid off a loan by working for someone until that debt was paid off. That's not the case here, since we're talking about a boy.

      A lot of assuming there.

Descendants? They would be her children, grandchildren, etc.
I think you mean her ancestors.

@@stephanieyee9784 That was the point being made. She would already know her descendants, i.e. her children.

Pretty cool that she went through all the time and energy to find out about relatives. I've never found that much information on my family. I don't think there is really a whole lot of glory back in those days.

Her voice reminds me of LOTR.
Also she’s already related to the coolest dude on earth. What else is there to know 😂
